Lankapage LogoJan 16, Colombo: Leftist parties in Sri Lanka are looking at forming an alliance to contest the forthcoming provincial council elections this year.

Leader of the New Left Front, Dr. Wickramabahu Karunaratne told the media that several left parties are currently engaged in a discussion to explore the possibility of forming an alliance to contest the Western and Southern Provincial Council elections.

He said the final decision on the matter will be reached by the end of this week.

According to Karunaratne the breakaway Marxist party, Frontline Socialist Party (FSP) had earlier discussed with him about contesting under a joint alliance, but has later changed its stance.

The FSP has said that it would stay away from the provincial council polls.

Dr. Karunaratne has however said his party was keen to contest the provincial council elections as a leftist party alliance.
