Health Minister of Sri Lanka's Central Province arrested over assault
Aug 04, Kandy: Health Minister of Sri Lanka's Central Province, Sunil Kithsiri Amaratunga, has been arrested on charges of assaulting a doctor, the police spokesman Superintendent of Police Ajith Rohana said today.
Kandy Police have arrested the Provincial Health Minister and produced before the court today for assaulting the Central Province Community Health Specialist Dr. Sapumal Danapala.
Kandy Additional District Judge and Acting Magistrate Augusta Perera ordered to remand the suspect till August 06.
The doctors of the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) in the Central Province today launched a strike demanding the immediate arrest of the Central Province Minister for assaulting Dr. Danapala and verbally threatening Central Provincial Health Services Director Dr. Shanthi Samarasinghe.
GMOA media spokesman Dr. Naveen De Soysa said the trade union action will continue until the authorities take steps to arrest the Provincial Councilor initiate legal action.
