Magistrate reprimands police for giving into Wasanthi Chaturani

wasanthiActress Wasanthi Chathurani has filed a complaint with the children and women’s bureau of the police against Neth FM media network’s owner Nihal Epa Seneviratne, CEO Asanga Jayasuriya and two journalists of its popular ‘Belumgala’ programme. The reason for the complaint is an exposure of her made by ‘Belumgala’ after she had objected to a prevous exposure of a corrupt official at the Presidential Secretariat.
She has complained not against the radio channel but its owner, CEO and the two announcers. Nihal and Asanga have given statements to the women’s bureau of the police, and on behalf of the two announcers, their head of the section gave a statement, as the exposure of their identities could endanger their lives. However, at the instigation of Wasanthi, the bureau is making quite an effort to hunt down the two journalists of ‘Belumgala.’
Despite any pressure by police, Neth FM has not produced the two journalists of ‘Belumgala.’ Then, Wasanthi has influenced the Bureau to obtain a warrant from the court. On her order, the bureau has made submissions to the Nugegoda magistrate’s court and sought permission to record statements from the two journalists. However, Nugegoda chief magistrate Aruna Aluthge has considered the safety of the two journalists and severely reprimanded police, telling them not to use courts for the lowly acts of the police. Perplexed by the unexpected outburst by the magistrate, police have withdrawn their request. Saddened by this, Wasanthi is trying to weave a net against magistrate Aluthge, sources say.
