Kerala state owned company formally recruit transgender women

May 18, 2017

The Kerala metro rail has recruited 23 transgender women to serve in ticket counters and house-keeping work in the station, customer relations, parking etc. depending on their qualifications and training.  According to Indian news reports this is the first time a Government owned company formally recruited these women.

These women are recruited through Kudumbashree, the Kerala state Poverty Eradication Mission along with over 500 workers trained by the Kudumbashree Mission. All these workers will be recruited to 11 different stations.
Many media reports rise frequently on the rising rate of deaths and harassments the transgender persons face in Kerala, despite positive policy decisions taken to ensure their rights.
Kerala Metro Rail Limited Managing Director Elias George told ‘the Hindu’ that this is an attempt to give these people their rightful share in this society and ensure that there will be leave no space for any discrimination to happen between transgender women and other women.

Living in a similar environment, Kerala has always been compared to Sri Lanka and its people. By holding on to narrow minded concept Sri Lanka seems to have falled far behind Cochin.
