Homes damaged as part of Meethotamulla garbage dump collapses

A section of the Meethotamulla garbage dump has reportedly collapsed, completely destroying several nearby houses and damaging others in the vicinity.

   At least 6 persons were reportedly admitted to the National Hospital following the incident which had occurred at around 3.00pm today (14). 

President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the tri-forces and the Disaster Management Minister to take all possible action to help the people affected by the incident. 

 The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) says that a Bell 212 helicopter with Bambi bucket has been deployed to assist in fighting the fire which has broken out at the Meethotamulla garbage dump.  

  Meanwhile the Government requests the public not to visit the Meethotamulla garbage dump area as such visits are a disturbance to the ongoing eleif efforts. 

 The Ministry of Power and Energy says that the electricity supply to the area affected by the collapsed garbage has been disconnected and that the people in the area will be provided electricity via generators.
