During the thirty year old war with the Tamil Tigers and the time when there was the fourth Eelam war the army general post was held by Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, Navy Commander post was held by Vice Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda and the Air Force commander post was held by Chief Marshall Roshan Gunathilake.

In order to honor the service of these three officers the former president lifted the positions of Sarath Fonseka to General, Wasantha KArannagoda to Admiral and Roshan Gunathilake to the Air Chief
Marshall. Though it is a normal practice to promote the positions to a higher level during retirement, since these officers were already promoted there was no promotion given during the retirement.

They have they did not get any promotions when they were going on retirement but when they were doing their duties. They were performing their duties while in their official post and usually when an army
commander goes on retirement he is promoted to the next position but they did not get that privilege. Meanwhile they have said they too were involved in the operation of killing the LTTE and liberating the
country and they were not commanding from the headquarters like Sarath Fonseka but deployed in the field risking their lives.

They said General Fonseka was not present during the end of the war and if he had reviewed the war it is a question why he didn’t have awareness to the last stages of the war. They inquired when both of us

President Maithripla has presented these demands to the defense ministry to check for reasonable points and requested a report. Until the demands are met there is news that promoting General Sarath Fonseka to the Field Marshall post would be delayed.
