Maithri –Nimal-John want President (MaRa) to abolish Executive Presidency

(Lanka-e-News- 19.May.2014, 11.30PM) The proposal made by senior Ministers of the government , Maithripala Sirisena , Nimal Siripala De Silva and John Seneviratne to President Mahinda Rajapakse to abolish the Executive Presidency had been most disdainfully and disgracefully discarded , according to reports reaching Lanka e news inside information division.
These SLFP senior Ministers have made this proposal after a meeting with the President at the Temple trees in the early part of this month .They have stated, in view of the Island wide loud voluble protests against the Executive Presidency , this system must be abolished prior to the next presidential elections, at which election the current President is a UPFA prospective candidate. They have therefore stated that a resolution shall be brought forward to abolish this Executive Presidency system , and the elections shall be conducted in accordance with the new system that has been agreed upon.
Mahinda Rajapakse who knows that it is only when he is the Executive President he can toy with the constitution , carry on his oppressive and dictatorial rule ,ride roughshod on the people’s wishes and by pass the legislature according to his personal whims and fancies , had not uttered a word about the abolition . He had dodged the burning issue and stated , if the Presidential elections is held under the new election system it will be advantageous to the UNP , and hence the Presidential elections shall be conducted as before.
The SLFP seniors who are in deep resentment against the present Executive Presidency had gone back after the discussions much more disappointed and disgruntled. Meanwhile Vasu -Samasamaja –communist and left parties that are of the government have jointly resolved that prior to the next Presidential elections , the executive Presidency shall be abolished. They have written a letter to the secretary of the SLFP inquiring about their opinion in this regard, based on reports reaching Lanka e news.No answer had been received from the SLFP yet.
However , it is most significant to note that in the election manifesto on which Mahinda Rajapakse got the mandate to rule the country , it is stated in page 84 of Mahinda chinthana expressly and explicitly under the constitutional amendments , that the executive Presidency shall be abolished , and a new constitution that will provide solutions to all the issues in the country is hoped to be introduced with the consent of all. The President ought to have therefore introduced officially amendments to the constitution which makes him answerable to the Parliament.
Yet , Mahinda Rajapakse who has become a byword for broken promises, even after ten years had still not honored that solemn promise he made in his much hyped Mahinda chinthana which to all intents and purposes had by now become a ‘ Mahinda karadara’ to the oppressed and abysmally suffering people.
