
A special police team has recovered a stock of arms allegedly belonging to former DIG Vass Gunawardena now in remand custody in connection with the murder of millionaire businessman Mohamed Shiyam.
The arms cache was unearthed from a livestock farm in the Weliveriya area. The items recovered included five T-56 assault rifles, two RPGs, grenades, ammunition and pistols, according to the police.
The police unearthed the arms cache, acting on information elicited from an Inspector, who had worked as a personal assistant to the suspect DIG under interrogation.
The police have reported the findings to the High Court No 05 at Hulftsdorp.
DIG Gunawardena, his son and several policemen have been accused of abducting and killing millionaire businessman M. M. Mohamed Shiyam, a father of three residing at Sagara Road, in Bambalapiyiya.
The victim was abducted on May 22, 2013 and his body was found in the Dompe area.
