President invites Sampanthan for talks

President Mahinda Rajapaksa, while extending birthday greetings to Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader, R. Sampanthan, has invited him for direct talks over the Tamil question.

According to sources, the TNA Leader, who turned 81 yesterday, is currently on a private visit in India and the President had invited him to have direct talks once the TNA Leader returned to Colombo from India.
The President has a habit of greeting the TNA Leader every year on his birthday, TNA sources added.
Sampanthan, a prominent leader from the Trincomalee District, entered Parliament from the TULF in 1977 at the age of 45.
Meanwhile, the TNA is planning to stage a mass protest in three stages in the Mannar District.
TNA Parliamentarian, Selvam Adaikalanathan will hold a special meeting to announce the date of the protest on Monday, 10 January at the Mannar Town Hall, sources said.
In the meantime, the TNA will also decide on its role at the UNHRC sessions in Geneva in March, when Sampanthan returns from India, sources said.
