Steeply mounting civilian deaths are also a feature of the politico-military crisis in Iraq, where the US has thinned its military presence, but there is no question of the US leaving the morass which is Iraq completely. Mounting civilian deaths in Iraq's sectarian violence notwithstanding, there is, apparently, no intention on the part of the US to completely disengage itself from the Iraqi political leadership. US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Iraq Brett McGurk did the explaining: 'In Iraq, whether you like it or not, oil, Al-Qaeda, Iran, vital US interests are at stake.'
