Army to probe its miscreants

The Sri Lanka Army will conduct confidential investigations into the involvement of military personnel in illegal activities, Army Commander, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake, said.
Speaking to Ceylon Today he said the Military Police will investigate any army personnel, against whom there are reports of misconduct.
"Recently, the Military Police arrested several army personnel, who were alleged to have been involved in a cement fraud in the Kandy area. Steps will be taken to remove such personnel from the forces," he said.
Parallel to the action taken by the Army, the police were also taking action against military personnel who are involved in molesting, defrauding and looting, he said adding, steps were taken imprison such military personnel.
A Court Martial imprisoned a military person, who tried to defraud a financial institution by disguising himself as a Muslim woman.
Ratnayake added, he had requested a preliminary inquiry report on the involvement of 11 military personnel in a timber smuggling racket in Maha Oya, Ampara.
