Possession of fake currency notes- Soldier to face Army Court of Inquiry

A soldier arrested in possession of 43 counterfeit Rs 1,000 notes, will face an army Court of Inquiry (CoI), the army media unit said yesterday.

Mawanella Police arrested the suspect, Private E.M. Sameera Sampath (23) of Kohobankulama, Wanni Kudawewa, Galgamuwa and another youth (26) on Saturday (18) around 1.30 p.m. when they had tried to purchase cigarettes from a shop by tendering the fake note.

The suspect, from 16 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment at Nunavil, Chavakachcheri was on leave at the time he was taken into custody with the counterfeit notes.

The Commander of the Army has given instructions to the Army Directorate of Legal Services to initiate a Court of Inquiry against the soldier. Soon after initial inquiries are completed, the Directorate of Legal Services at Army Headquarters will initiate a CoI on priority basis for trial. If the soldier is found guilty, severe disciplinary action will be taken, including the termination of his Army service, irrespective of the outcome in the Civil Court, the army media unit said.
  

Left parties in the government to support Samagi

 
samagi logoLeft parties affiliated to the governing UPFA have decided to support the Samagi movement initiated by the UNP.

Political sources have been quoted in the local media as saying that several ministers and government MPs will extend their support to the movement following this decision.
The Samagi Movement has been formed with the aim of abolishing the executive presidency, implement the 13th Amendment and repeal the 18th Amendment.
Many second tier members of the Communist Party and Lanka Sama Samaja Party are working with Samagi based on the need to find a political solution to the national problem.
The TNA has also extended its support to Samagi.
