MaRa's regime trounced: budget defeated in many local bodies- Maithripala hints after capturing power craving for wealth is the cause
(Lanka-e-News-31.Dec.2013, 11.00PM) MaRa who went on with his threats and intimidations without limit and multiplying them is now caught in a tangle of defeats .
The budgets presented at the Ampara Damana and Homagama local bodies whose powers were held by the ruling MaRa regime were defeated in the second round too necessitating the two chairpersons of the bodies who are MaRa’ s strong henchmen to go home.
The chairman of Damana local body at that juncture collapsed holding his chest following a heart attack .This incident was something unprecedented in the local body history . Moreover not a single vote being cast in favor of the budget was another historic feature.
The Damana local body budget was defeated on the second round by 5 votes with all 5 votes being cast against the budget while not a single vote was cast in favor of the budget.
It is most significant to note that all the five votes against the budget were cast by the members of the UPFA including the vice chairman of the body. During the voting , one UPFA member refrained from voting while two other UPFA members walked out without voting.
The Damana local body is constituted of 9 members comprising 7 UPFA members and two UNP members.
In the first round of voting the budget was defeated by a majority of 5 votes.
Before the voting began , a group was demonstrating in front of the local body building in support of the chairman Mangala Mahinda. The latter who arrived at the venue to address them suddenly suffered from a heart ailment and had to be admitted to Ampara hospital.
Following this , the Damana local body met presided over by the vice chairman when the voting took place.
Meanwhile the budget presented at the Homagama local body for the second time was defeated by 2 votes. 10 voting for and 12 voting against. One member abstained from voting.
At the Ampara Uhana local body the budget was defeated in the second round . Since the chairman did not arrive on time , the opposition appointed an acting chairman and the proceedings were carried on. However , as the chairman who came later walked out without terminating the meeting and conducting the voting , a commotion ensued. The members yelled out that the chairman slipped away because he had no reason to cite to postpone the assembly .The secretary too reported sick and kept away from the meeting..
Following the budget defeats at a majority of the local bodies in Polonnaruwa , Vijitha Punchihewa SLFP member of Embilipitiya Municipal council of another defeated provincial administration , a staunch MaRa stooge had said , Maithripala Sirisena , the SLFP secretary and district leader should resign. It is learnt that MaRa is instigating Punchihewa on the sly. .Indeed MaRa had taken special pains to phone and wish him .
Meanwhile Maithripala Sirisena expressing his views pertaining to the defeats at the provincial administration bodies said , there is an issue in regard to the ‘power’ and ‘wealth’ of the chairpersons of these bodies . The chairpersons who were appointed , after winning, neglected politics and chased after wealth. , and this was the cause of the defeats, he pointed out
Sirisena went on to say that such victories are ‘first and last’ which was an insinuation directed at Medamulana Rajapakses who are most leading in that game of acquiring wealth exploiting politics and power. In other words he stated that Rajapakses cannot win again , and this is their last.
