Time has come to work for the victory of the party, and all in the party should realize that the interval is over now, stresses UNP leadership council chairman and MP Karu Jayasuriya.
Flanked by council members Tissa Attanayake, Ravi Karunanayake, Mangala Samaraweera, Lakshman Kiriella and Ruwan Wijewardena, he was speaking at the inaugural media brieing of the council at the party headquarters Sirikotha today (5).
The UNP leadership council has been vested with 19 powers and respnsiblities, including formulating policies and national strategies for all ranks of the party, preparing promotional programmes to increase the membership, appointing zonal organizers in consultation with the party leader, and appointing the nomination boards and formulating the benchmarks for giving nominations in consultation with the party leader.

A nine member UNP Leadership Council was whittled down to seven a few hours ago after UNP MP Thalatha Athukorale, refused a seat on the Council this afternoon.

Athukorale is a strong supporter of Sajith Premadasa who refused to sit on the Council after it was constituted yesterday, claiming it would be a betrayal of the monks that tried to broker the compromise.
