Inaugural match of Namal’s team a damp squib
- Wednesday, 20 November 2013

The first rugby match played by MP Namal Rajapaksa’s rugby team, Hambantota Sharks with Havelocks Sports Club in the Dialog A division inter club rugby league was a damp squib with the match being called off due to a power failure at the Havelock Park where the match was being played.
The rugby match between the Hambantota Sharks and Havelocks Sports Club was to be the first league match to be played under flood lights in the country.
However, the entire ground was in darkness when the lights had gone off as soon as the game commenced.
Although the lights were restored about 45 minutes later, the game was disrupted and the Sharks have refused to play.
Hambantota Sharks Sports Club president Johan Fernando (Minister Johnston Fernando’s son) has said the game has to be replayed in the Sharks’ home ground or the team has to be awarded two points.
The match was scheduled to be played first on the 15th, but was postponed due to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The match has now been abandoned for the second time due to a power failure.
The Rajapaksas who had arrived at the ground to watch the match had protested due to the threat the power failure could pose to their security.
