Grade eight students and teachers of Gamini National School, Bentota were admitted to the Bentota Hospital, as they started developing adverse reactions to vitamin pills containing iron, which were provided to them by the school.
The pills were distributed among schools, as part of an initiative by the Ministries of Health and Education, to reduce anaemia among students and teachers.
In this particular case, the pills were provided to the school by the Induruwa Medical Centre, and the victims suffered nausea, diarrhoea and faintness.
The Bentota Hospital said the pills should be taken along with worm medicine and vitamin C pills, and only after meals. However, the 30 students and two teachers had not followed the given instructions and had therefore developed adverse reactions as a result, doctors said.
Students claimed the lack of toilet facilities in the school caused more inconveniences. Meanwhile, it is unusual for teachers to have had the vitamins as it was provided only for the students.
Hospital sources said the patients were discharged on the same day. (Ceylon Today Online)
