Govt. has exposed SL to international intervention - JVP
Referring to the visit by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today alleged that the government has exposed the country to international intervention by its very involvement in human rights violation.
Addressing the media, JVP Politbureau member Anura Kumara Dissanayake said, in order to hold its grip on the power the government has eroded the democracy of the country.
“In recent past journalists were killed and attacked, but no one was arrested regarding those crimes. It is clear that the government is behind these attacks,” he claimed.
Speaking on the visit of UN Human Rights Commissioner Navanethem Pillay, he said though some of the government politicians have criticized her visit, it was the government that invited her to visit Sri Lanka.
He also said, the President was not even bothered by the visit of UN Human Right Commissioner and that he went on a foreign trip just before her arrival.
He noted, UN is not an impartial organization nor it protects the sovereignty of the states. He added that the UN acts according to the agenda of United States of America (USA) however, the government has made the platform for them to interfere with the country by violating human rights of its citizens.
Further emphasizing on human right violations he said, when fisher folks protest demanding subsidies one of the fishermen was killed, when people in Ratupaswala protested demanding clean water, they were shot and three people dead.
“The government ministers speak about abolishing the 13th Amendment in Sri Lanka while Minister of External Affairs G.L. Peiris was promising India to protect the 13th Amendment,” he said.
He added that international interference is required for the survival of the government as they can keep public support by highlighting the patriotism.
“The government has not provided employment, they have not provided any reliefs to the public, the prices of goods are sky high and the economy has not been achieved. So the only thing the government can sell in the political market is patriotism. To do that they want statements of people like Pillay and Jayalalitha,” he added further. (Ceylon Today Online)
