Anarkali’s
rape and abuse mumbo- jumbo won’t do

Southern
Provincial Councillor Anarkali Akarsha, speaking to a Special Correspondent of
this paper last week had voiced her concerns regarding the increasing number in
rape and abuse of children. In what I read as a delivery resonant of much
earnestness and commitment, but without much broad political or social sense to
complement, Akarsha makes some startling statements. Rape and abuse of children,
according to this young politician, are in the main caused by
“perpetrators....who are either jobless or are not meaningfully occupied.”
Hence, she highlights it as “our duty” (‘our’ as in the government? Or, society
at large?) to “look out for such people and provide them with steady jobs or an
alternative form of employment.” What makes Akarsha see this necessary
correlation, to say the least, is puzzling.
