Jaffna has been peaceful but Kilinochchi was marred by violence during the elections
 In a rare electoral setback for the Sri Lankan government, the biggest Tamil party has won local elections in the north of the island, once the scene of the separatist civil war.
The Tamil National Alliance or TNA also won half the councils at stake in the ethnically mixed east.
But President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s government swept to victory in all the other areas being contested, indicating that ethnic polarisation is still an issue in the country.
These elections were held in a number of councils around Sri Lanka.

A youth organizer of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has been transferred to Jaffna hospital after an assault using a pistol allegedly by a pro-government ex-militant group.
Sunderalingam Yogeswaran is the chief youth wing organiser of the TNA and a local school teacher.

While the government says that the results of the Saturday’s local elections in the north was a victory for democracy after the end of the conflict, the victorious party has urged the government to work on improving democracy.
Susil Premjayantha, the secretary general of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Party (UPFA) told BBC Sandeshaya that the voters in Sri Lanka has delivered a message to the international community.
