Bishop of Kandy Dr. Vianney Fernando yesterday said that the judiciary of the country should be independent.

Addressing the media in Colombo, in the presence of Malcom Cardinal Ranjith , he said the judiciary was the body which interpreted the law and therefore, the legislature and the executive could not be regarded as entities above it.

The judiciary should be totally free from interference from other branches of government, he said.

Though the legislature drew up or approved laws, the guarantor of the true justice is an independent judiciary, he explained.

Setting up of independent commissions such as Police, Election,

Bribery and Corruption, Human Rights, and the Constitutional Council immediately would strengthen the rule of law and justice in the country, he said.

"Our country had suffered due to extremism and therefore establishing those institutions would ensure true democracy," he added.
