Deadly Revelations on Drugs and Underworld!

Western Province Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon has revealed that the Province remains a hotbed for narcotics and underworld activities in the country.

It is shocking to understand that the Western Province despite being the premier Province containing all important defence institutions has been identified as the hotbed of narcotics and underworld activities posing a threat to law and order in the entire country.

It was ten years ago a `free for all' situation remained in the country when the separatist war was being fought with anti social elements taking the upper hand.

However, now with the end of the separatist war in the country, Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon's revelations about the drug menace and the underworld activities remains scary and even emphasises the need of completely annihilating the drug menace and underworld activities.

As the present regime under the leadership of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa focused on enhancing the economy of the country by initiating several development activities, underworld cannot reign in a manner threatening the law and order.

So, Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon's efforts towards getting rid of the underworld menace which remains the root cause for all unlawful activities such as drugs , prostitution , robbery, murder and extortion should be dealt with, with an `iron fist' to maintain law and order and protect the law abiding citizens.

The terrifying statistics released by the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board shows that there are 5.9 million drug users in the society and 300,000 of them are found to be below the age of 18 years.

The anti-narcotics special operations in the areas surrounding schools have shown how far the drug dealers have targeted the schoolgoers.

A few days ago 100 kilograms of Kerala cannabis was seized in a special operation by Excise Department officials at a children's park at Thondamannaru in the Jaffna Peninsula.

During the turbulent days the sea area in the North was constantly monitored by Sri Lanka Navy to cripple any form of terrorist activities in the North and the East waters.

However, as a result of stringent security measures being relaxed in the North and the East waters, drug trafficking has increased significantly between South India and the Northern part of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka's post-war development activities are gathering momentum with new sea ports and airports emerging in various strategic locations in the island.

So, it should be the paramount task of the law enforcement officials to ensure the eradication of drug related activities which are very much interlinked with underworld operations throwing the challenge to the prosperity of the country.

National Dangerous Drugs Control Board has revealed that in the Western Province alone 1.8 million drug addicts remain.
So, on the other hand the existence of the drug addicts on this mega scale will clearly indicate to what extent the criminal activities will also remain high challenging the law and order.

As the drug related activities remain the main part of the underworld operations the big time drug peddlers have also been found with dangerous sophisticated weapons to carry out their activities.

In a special operation carried out recently to deal with drug dealers, a nine-member underworld gang has been nabbed with four sophisticated handguns and a T-56 assault rifle.

The anti-narcotics operations while focusing on directly dealing with the drug barons, proper investigations should be also carried out to find out whether the big time drug dealers have any political clout or have their links with those who are in influential positions.

Therefore, Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon's efforts towards eradicating underworld activities which is linked with drug menace as well as several other anti-social activities should be very well supported to make sure Sri Lanka is a very safe country to live.
