Executive Director of the Centre for Policy Alternatives (CPA), Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu has lodged a complaint with the Acting Inspector General of Police (AIGP), C.D. Wickramaratne, requesting that the Chief Prelate of the Asgiriya Chapter of the Siam Sect, Ven. Warakagoda Sri Gnanarathana Thera be arrested.
The complaint had been lodged on 21 June against an alleged statement made by the monk at the Dodamwala Kithsirimewan Rajamaha Viharaya.
Dr. Saravanamuttu has urged the Acting IGP to file charges against the Thera under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights Act and the Code of Criminal Procedure Act, among others. He has added the law should be equal to anyone in the society no matter what their status is.
Meanwhile, Co-Convener of the National Intellectuals Bhikkhu Forum, Ven. Professor Medagoda Abhayatissa Thera claimed that there is a massive conspiracy, both locally and internationally against the Sinhala Buddhist culture and as a result, some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) want to bring Ven. Gnanarathana Thera before a Court.
“Sinhala Buddhist masses may definitely take action against those harmful forces. The Buddhist clergy has been standing up for the nation and religion throughout history. When Ven. Gnanarathana Thera stood against the discrimination against the Sinhala community, NGOs do not have the moral right to speak against that,” he claimed.
Speaking further, Ven. Abhayatissa Thera said that Dr. Saravanamuttu’s actions are revolting and strictly condemned them.
