PM pledges speedy economic relief and new Constitution
Pledging to provide speedy economic relief, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that a three-year fast tracked economic development programme will be unveiled shortly to mark the completion of the first year in office of President Maithripala Sirisena.
The PM said in Colombo last week that over the past year the government had, while providing various concessions to the people, been busy ushering in good governance, restoring the rule of law, protecting human rights and eliminating corruption, which were the key planks of the platform on which it had been elected to office. "While continuing to strengthen democracy, we will, over the next three years, work towards improving the kitchen or household economy, which will receive priority in
our social and economic development programme aimed at eradicating poverty, generate more employment opportunities and increase people’s incomes. This will be achieved with the support of the masses and the international community," he said.
Wickremesinghe observed that they had heralded a new political order paving the way for the establishment of a National Unity Government.
The new economic journey would be unprecedented and benefit Sri Lankans living in all parts of the country, said the PM. It would be accompanied by the enactment of a new Constitution to address post war issues and establish durable peace in an environment where everyone’s rights would be ensured, he pledged, adding that people in the North who were displaced due to the war, were being resettled in their original lands.
The Prime Minister said that for the first time a President of the country had agreed to abolish executive powers and for that President Maithripala Srisena had to be commended.
