UNP convention draws mammoth unprecedented crowds : Gas, rice prices down; nothing said against Maithri
It is only the UNP as a political party that holds a special convention when the general elections is in the offing to get the approval of its membership in regard to the election proposals, as part of its Democratic policies.
The UNP special convention held at the Campbell park was historic. The mammoth crowds that thronged the venue was stunning , even exceeding the crowds at the UNP last May day Rally. A most noteworthy feature was, apart from the record crowd , all those who attended the event were brimming with enthusiasm. Never was any political party been able to draw such a massive crowd for its convention in Sri Lanka ‘s history , and never in the history of Sri Lanka has such massive crowds attended a convention of any other political party.
The convention chaired by Prime minister Ranil Wickremesinghe began with two resolutions which were presented and adopted.
The main aim of the discussion was taking into the fold of the UNP those of the good governance front who are abandoning the SLFP and UPFA. Elections are to be contested under the name of ‘United national Front for good governance ‘ with the elephant symbol , but as there isn’t sufficient time , it was proposed that the registration is made after the elections. This proposal was adopted unanimously by the members .
The memorandum of understanding of the ‘United national Front for good governance ‘ is to be signed tomorrow at 10.00 in the morning at Temple Trees.
Another striking feature during the proceedings was, not one speaker at the convention criticised or berated president Maithripala Sirisena over his traitorous betrayal .
The UNP that is aiming at re capturing power after 20 years has to work for the next 5 years with Maithripala Sirisena who was made the president by the UNP.
The UNP working as a responsible political party without entering into conflicts , and minimising them in the future despite the present existing differences augurs well. Casting aside cheap political popularity agendas is a salutary policy of the UNP.
Another noteworthy feature of this special convention was , in the background were displayed the photographs of both Late D.S . Senanayake and Late S. W. R.D. Bandaranaike together.
A number of photographs relating to the convention are herein. The speeches of the speakers will follow
