Protests against decision to nominate Rajapaksa
( July 3, 2015, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Several trade unions and patriotic movements held a protest campaign against the decision to nominate former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest the forthcoming election. The trade union collective held a protest opposite the Colombo Fort Railway Station today. The convener of the trade union collective, Saman Rathnapriya, was quoted as saying that the people of this country rejected former President Rajapaksa at the January presidential elections.
The United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has decided to give nominations to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa to contest at the upcoming General Election on August, a statement from UPFA said. The decision was taken at a meeting presided over by the President Sirisena yesterday.
