“Complain To IGP If Concerned Of Al-Qaeda In SL” Says Shoora Council

Colombo Telegraph
July 6, 2014
National Shoora Council (NSC) – an alliance of national level Muslim organisations in Sri Lanka has urged those concerned of an Al-Qaeda presence in the country to lodge complaints with the IGP without demonizing the Muslim community.
Inspector General of Police
Inspector General of Police
NSC President, Tariq Mahmud in a statement to the press has pointed out that although it is their belief that allegations of jihadist groups operating in Sri Lanka and of their involvement in the Aluthgama attacks are absolutely false, the claims have detrimentally impacted the Muslim community in the country, which he describes is a matter far worse than the violence inflicted upon the Muslim communities in Aluthgama and Beruwala on June 15.
“The allegations are being made by those who have no defence or apology for the serial crimes unleashed by hate charged mobs on innocent Muslims on 15 and 16 June,” he notes.
While urging concerned parties to lodge complaints with the IGP, the NSC has assured their fullest cooperation in the investigations as well as in taking legal action against ‘such devils behind every bush’ if needed.
Mahmud has further highlighted that it should be taken into account that while the Ministry of Defence has refuted allegations of extremist Islamic groups operating on Lankan soil; the claims have in fact been made by foreign intelligence agencies.
He points out that the accusations are being made to legitimize the entry of foreign powers into Sri Lanka with aims of destabilizing the country and establishing a puppet regime. In the statement he has further called for an investigation into groups or individuals who are in the payroll of these ‘foreign powers’.

Muslim Council Wants India To Clarify Daily Mirror Story On “Muslim Extremists Targeting India”

July 6, 2014
Colombo TelegraphThe Sri Lanka Muslim Council (SLMC) has expressed grave concern over reports that have quoted Indian Intelligence officials who have warned of an alleged presence of Muslim terror groups in the country, pointing out that such claims have further fuelled anti-Muslim campaigns in Sri Lanka.

SLMC President, N. M. Ameen in a letter to the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, Y.K. Sinha has sought an immediate clarification of the Indian government’s position on the reports that refer to Islamic terror groups operating in the country, asserting that such claims have heavily contributed to the growing Islamophobia in the island nation.
“It is important that it is contained,” Ameen has written yesterday, adding such claims have heavily affected the progress of reconciliation, peace and stability in Sri Lanka.
In the letter he has referred to mainstream and social media reports that he claims has bashed the Muslim Community in Sri Lanka by making it appear as if local Muslims are party to terrorist groups that target India.
Ameen has referred to the contradiction between Indian media reports and the statement made by Sri Lanka’s Secretary to the Ministry of DefenceGotabaya Rajapaksa in a recent interview with Daily Mirror where he has rejected the existence of Islamic terror groups on Lankan soil and the confusion it has generated, that has led to the circulation of unsubstantiated rumours.
He has gone on to state that unfortunate incidents like the arrest of an individual of Islamic faith in Chennai on charges of espionage does not prove the existence of Muslim terror groups in Sri Lanka, but has expressed worry over the mere facts being exploited by Buddhist extremists and certain political factions to taint the local Muslim community.
“Such incidents contribute to the hate campaigns against the Muslim community in Sri Lanka and has fuelled violence towards Muslims in the country as seen recently by the anti-Muslim violence that erupted in Southern Sri Lanka,” Ameen has further noted.
