Anti Punjabi Attire JBV Principal Collects “Legal Fees” From Parents

April 25, 2014
Colombo TelegraphThe Principal of Janadipathi Balika Vidyalaya, Nayana Thakshila Perera had allegedly sought the assistance of parents to cover her “legal fees” after reportedly stating that it amounts to over ” 400,000″ Rs, despite being entitled to representation from the Attorney General’s Department.
Sri-Lanka_HijabDuring a specially convened meeting held at the school today, the Principal who is at the centre of a controversy regarding the banning of the ‘punjabi’ attire in school, had informed the parents that she is to “mortgage her car” in order to cover her ” legal costs”.
However, since the action filed in the Supreme Court against the Principal is regarding an administrative action taken by the Principal in her capacity as the Principal of the school, she is entitled to representation from the Attorney General.
Accordingly the motive behind seeking assistance from the parents is unclear.
Parents today had thereafter collected, Rs 500 from each parent who was present at the meeting in order to meet the purported ” legal costs”.
The parents, had signed a form circulated by a group of parents and thereafter handed over the money.
The collection is also in contravention of successive education MInistry circulars banning collecting of finances from parents and students.
The Fundamental Rights application filed by a student in which the student states that the Principal ordered her to remove the Punjabi attire, which comprises a shawl and a trouser apart from the school uniform and thereafter worship the Principal is to be taken up on April 29, 2014.
The complaint to the Human Rights Council by the parents of the Principal is also to be heard on April 28th, 2014.
