UN envoy raises land issue

Visiting UN Special Rapporteur Chaloka Beyani raised the land issue in the North, when he met Justice Minister Rauff Hakeem today.
The Justice Ministry said that Hakeem had told the UN envoy that the land issue is being addressed at this moment.
Hakeem also said that all communities in Sri Lanka are now co-existing following the end of the 30 year war.
The Minister briefed the UN envoy on the post war progress and measures taken to implement the LLRC recommendations.
Beyani today ended his five-day official visit to Sri Lanka where he examined the overall situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country.
During his visit he had meetings in Colombo, Jaffna and Mullaitivu.
The Special Rapporteur met with representatives from the Government, civil society and the UN, among others. He also visited various sites of displacement and meet with displaced persons and local authorities.
Beyani will present preliminary observations through a written statement shortly after the end of mission. His full report will be presented to the Human Rights Council in June 2014. (Colombo Gazette)
