Police officers inspect the two excavators and a tipper truck which were set on fire by a group of person while they were parked in the Wilgamvehera area on the Trincomalee-Anuradhapura main road, where a reservoir in being built. A group of seven individuals had reportedly arrived at the location last night, assaulted and tied up the security guard stationed there to safeguard the machinery before carrying out the act of arson. Two backhoes that were sent to renovate a lake situated in Uppuveli, Trincomalee were set on fire by an unknown group last night, police spokesperson SSP Ajith Rohana told Ceylon Today Online.
He further stated that the machines, which are owned by a private contractor, were sent to the location on a contract granted by a government minister.
The Uppuveli Police is currently conducting investigations into the incident. (Ceylon Today Online)
