The newly-elected Northern Provincial Council (NPC) will have its inaugural session at the recently constructed NPC Secretariat at Kaithady on Thursday, 25 October.

Ayngaranesan, Provincial Minister of Fisheries, P. Deniswaran, Deputy Chairman, Antony Jeganathan, Chairman, Kandiah Sivagnanam and the Provincial Councillors will attend the event.

The eight Provincial Councillors of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) yet to take their oaths are expected to be sworn-in before 25 October, while former TELO Leader and Parliamentarian, M.K. Sivajilingam, has taken oaths at Vellamullivaikkal where LTTE Leader, Velupillai Prabhakaran, met his fatal end.

It is not yet known whether Governor of the Northern Province, Mayor General (retd) G.A. Chandrasiri, would participate in the event, given the objection raised by the TNA against a military officer occupying the Chief Executive post of the Province.

Health Minister of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC), Dr. P. Sathyalingam, has initiated a unique move by setting up a separate ward for the physically handicapped patients at the Mullaitivu Hospital.

Dr. Sathyalingam, soon after assuming duties in his post, travelled to the Mullaitivu District, which was badly affected during the final phase of the war in 2009.

The surveys carried out in the Mullaitivu District have revealed that hundreds of people have been affected with physical deformities due to the war. They also visit the Mulliativu Hospital regularly for their treatments. Therefore, the new NPC Health Minister has decided to give priority to the physically handicapped patients in the Mullaitivu District and in the Northern Province at large.

Following the directive of the Health Minister, the construction of the new ward for the physically handicapped patients is expected to begin shortly.

According to Dr. Sathyalingam, the Mullaitivu Hospital was badly affected as a result of crossfire between the LTTE cadres and the Security Forces during the last lap of the war.

Dr. Sathyalingam also met the medical officials in the Mullaitivu District, along with Deputy Chairman of the NPC, Anthon Jeyanathan, who was elected from the Mullaitivu District at the NPC polls. (Ceylon Today Online)
