Blood is thicker than water’ is a German proverb. A popular western expression it generally means that the bonds of family and common ancestry are stronger than the bonds between unrelated people such as friendship. However, masses in Weliweriya shed their blood on behalf of water and made blood ‘thinner’ than water. These valiant people were not prepared to withdraw their struggle for clean drinking water. The government deployed its Army to take three innocent lives who were gunned down and injure scores of others who had their heads smashed and limbs broken to take revenge from the courageous people
