Redoing Anthem will create problems: Warning from Buddhist Prelate
The Mahanayake of the Ramanna Nikaya Most Venerable Napana Premasiri Thera said that reconstituting the National Anthem with Tamil verses would only give rise to unnecessary problems in the country.
The Thera speaking at a ceremony at the Udalanka Pirivena in Madawala, Ulpatha said that he was expressing strong dislike of the Maha Sangha regarding any such move.
The National Anthem of Sri Lanka was created in the 1940s to represent all communities in the country. This originates brotherhood feelings among the ethnic groups in the country.
It depicts the cultural and civilizational heritage of the country. All communities respect the present national anthem and it has led to solidarity among all.
Meanwhile Sri Lanka Minister Wimal Weerawansa had objected to this.
I am objecting the redoing Anthem of Sri Lanka and if any redoing should occur in the National Anthem, initially two third majority should be acquired at the parliament or opinion voting should be conducted was stated by him.
Some Buddhist Sinhala groups have already objected to this proposal.
Meanwhile Sri Lanka Minister Vasudeva Nanayakara has submitted a proposal to include Tamil language in the Sri Lanka National Anthem to bring harmony.
