
Minister Mervyn Silva had visited the President and had pleaded to save his coordinating secretary’s life. The President had then given details of many crimes committed by Amal Rodrigo in the past few months and had told the Minister that he would be released in an hour.
The President had said that Amal Rodrigo had extorted Rs. 50 million from Akbar Brothers, which is one of the main companies involved in exporting tea, and such actions had even figured in the international arena.
He had then told Mervyn Silva that he should not come before him to beg for forgiveness hereafter if Amal continued to act in such a manner.
Amal Rodrigo was abducted by a group of unidentified persons in a white van near the Nugegoda Jubilee Post around 3 p.m. yesterday.
After hearing the incident, Amal’s wife had begged Minister Mervyn Silva to save her husband without allowing Amal to suffer the same fate as Loku Seeya.
Amal Rodrigo is married to the sister of popular TV announcers Irosha and Nirosha.
Amal Rodrigo is known as an extortionist in the Kiribathgoda area and extorts money from the three wheeler driver to the large scale businessman in the area.
He takes Rs. 500 monthly from a three wheeler driver, Rs. 100,000 from an ordinary businessman and Rs. 500,000 from a large scale businessman.
The former head of the businessmen’s association Kiribathgoda, Amal Rodrigo openly collects monies saying it was Minister Mervyn Silva’s public services.
