Kalmunai town development is an environment disaster

People in Kalmunai have started a protest campaign against occupying lands against the Kalmunai city development project.

People who came by a protest march today yesterday 28th through a town submitted a written petition to the Kalmunai Town Council and divisional secretariat.
 
Civil society activist in the area said the proposed town development is against the government policies. The people pointed out filling the earth would destruct the natural resources, fishing and it is a destruction of the environment.
 
The people further pointed out that a danger of a village getting under water due to the filling of earth.

The protesters said the occupied lands belong to the sacred area.
 
Social activist K. Sivalingam said if this fertile land is accumulated it is a loss for us. Farmers and fisherman’s living in the area are against this.
 
S. Mahesh a resident who joined the protest said all Sinhala, Muslim and Tamil area residents are against this project.

However the deputy chairman of the Kalmunai town council M. Bakeer said that the proposed town development project is a good project for all people.
 
“The Kalmunai town development started under the guidance of Rauff Hakeem. Since there is no vacant land in the area where Muslims are living we occupied the lands available behind the city and widening the town” the deputy chairman emphasized.
 
He said the new town build would not only limit the Muslims but built to all communities living in the area.
 
Few TNA MP’s also participated in the protest campaign held yesterday 28th.
