Given the political acumen of the former President it is difficult to conclude that the election results would have surprised him. But to the world outside the result was unexpected. Having amended the Constitution to his advantage, Rajapaksa called for a surprise election to get a third term of six more years that would allow him to be president of the Island country till 2020.
