Who is the VVIP to be arrested according to IGP’s prediction?

2016-07-27
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pujith Jayasundara made a most intriguing remark recently. He said, in the future those whom none would have even dreamt of are going to be taken into custody.
The crucial question is: who are these culprits who cannot even be unimagined of and are beyond the dreams of any law abiding citizen?
While this has evoked the curiosity of the people, it also appears that the pro- Mahinda group has been rattled by the IGP's announcement. They are questioning, how could the IGP make such a statement? When the ministers and MPs of the Maithri-Ranil Government earlier on revealed the bigwigs of Mahinda's Government are going to be taken into custody, the pro-Mahinda groups sarcastically asked, whether cases are now being heard by politicians. And now when the IGP echoes that, the same groups are saying, he cannot make such statements.
Truly, the heavyweights of the Maithri-Ranil Government making utterances about those to be arrested is wrong because it constitutes political interference with the legal processes, but of course the Police saying such a thing is not improper because the report of the Police investigation is received by the IGP. It is the IGP who knows who is going to be arrested, and who is not. Hence the IGP's remark, those whom none would have dreamt of are going to be arrested is obviously after having read the investigation reports.
Voted for good governance
Certainly, this comment should have made those who voted for good governance to rejoice for these voters desired that the culprits shall be trapped well and thoroughly. In the mandate given by the people to the good governance government, the topmost priority is given to apprehending the ace rogues, whereas the former IGP appointed by Mahinda Rajapaksa did not understand this mandate given by the pro-good governance masses to the government. During the tenure of office of ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa, if the IGP at that time had made such an announcement, Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa would have squeezed the neck of the IGP because at that time the Police were puppets under the Rajapaksa Government. The IGP was only a ventriloquist dummy of Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The former had only to announce what the latter instructed.
After Maithri became the President however, the Police were able to function with freedom. The former IGP suppressed the Thajudeen murder investigation, and most of the frauds and corruption of the Rajapaksas. If the Maithri-Ranil team had only given orders to arrest the pro-Mahinda groups, by now Gotabaya will not be shouting and screaming amidst the security provided to him that the Tigers are rising again. Wimal Weerawansa, too, who forged the passport, birth certificate and cheated on the government will not be globetrotting gleefully and making a huge hue and cry that the government is betraying the country.
The best example illustrating the vindictive arrest of opponents of a government was taking into custody of Sarath Fonseka by the government of Mahinda. When Fonseka was arrested even an indictment sheet was not served on him. The victim did not even know why he was arrested. It is only after he was dragged and taken, and put behind bars that the Attorney General's (AG) Department filed indictment.
At that time, unlike now the Courts did not question the indictments filed by the AG's Department. Verdicts were delivered by accepting the indictments. Fonseka was not produced before Court after remanding him for a day or week, and granted bail. He was in Welikada Jail from 2010 until 2013.
Azath Salley
The other case in point is the arrest of Azath Salley on 3 May 2013. Unbelievably, except Azath Salley no one else including the police spokesman knew why or wherefore Salley was taken into custody. The Police Spokesman revealed Salley was taken into custody on an anonymous complaint. Later the government to save face said, he was taken into custody based on his inflammatory statements. That was how the government ordered the Police and took individuals into custody.
If this government was also to issue such orders to take into custody, today the entire family of Rajapaksa must be within the four walls of the prison. Because this government has entrusted that task to the Police, until the charges are filed, the culprits are still free. Though the whole country was aware about the murky activities at the CSN channel, and that Yoshitha was responsible, it took a year for the Police to prove it. The Police took Yoshitha into custody only in January 2016.
Namal was taken into custody only just recently. The UNP which was in the Opposition at that time raised this Krrish deal and questioned on this as far back as in 2013. However, Executive Director Gupta of Krrish Co. issuing a statement to the Sunday Times newspaper of 14 July 2013 refuted the allegations mounted that bribes were given to a VVIP politician of Sri Lanka and a high rung government servant. When Dr. Harsha de Silva (of the then Opposition), too, questioned on this at that time, then Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena repudiated the accusations.
It is now nearly one and a half years since the Maithri-Ranil Government came to power. It has taken one and a half years to probe into this Krrish deal, and it is only thereafter Namal could be arrested. If Namal was arrested owing to political pressures, surely Namal would not have been released in a week. Basil did not remain in incarceration for a month, and Yoshitha was in remand custody for only about a fortnight and Namal too wasn't in remand custody for even a week. This was all because of the independent investigations, arrests and delivery of verdicts by the Courts sans pressures. Whether it is Namal, Yoshitha or Basil, the question the Courts asked was, when they are arrested, why can't they be granted bail? If the Police had not duly filed the plaint they are released.
During the period of the Rajapaksa administration when its opponents were arrested, the first thing it did was exerting pressure on the Courts. Whether it was Fonseka or Sally, the term they should be held in prison was decided by the Rajapaksa family. After that, the decision is first conveyed to the Courts, and subsequently the Police are issued orders. On the contrary, today, it is the Police that decide who shall and shan't be arrested. This is precisely why the IGP had been able to announce those least expected even in a dream are going to be arrested. Right now, the entire country is in earnest anticipation to learn who these culprits are.

Bar Expresses Concern Over Ranil’s Media Lashing

July 29, 2016
The Rule of Law Committee of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka has expressed its concern over the recent media lashing by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe for supporting the Opposition.
Ranil
Ranil
Colombo Telegraph“The committee firmly believes that, media freedom which is known as the fifth protocol, in any country, is a quintessential pillar in any democracy, and there should not be any attempt to unduly curtail that fundamental freedom in any way,” the Committee said in a statement today.
While being mindful that unethical reporting has to be subjected to the due process of law, the Committee has drawn attention of all sections to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which reads: “Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes the freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.”
“The Rule of Law Committee while being mindful that unethical reporting has to be subject to the due process of law yet emphasises that a legal and regulatory environment that allows for an open pluralistic media sector to emerge as well as the political will to support the sector, and the rule of law to protect it; are necessary prerequisites for the realization of the aforetasted freedom,” the statement said.
The Committee has appealed to the Government to ensure an environment in which fair and responsible opposition and dissent are respected and tolerated and where the media is free to give voice to those who may wish to disagree with the government.

PM urged to expose, move court against corrupt journalists

By Shamindra Ferdinando-July 29, 2016, 9:34 pm

Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association (SLWJA) has urged Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to reveal the identities of corrupt journalists and whatever information he had pertaining to their activities.

SLWJA President Lasantha Ruhunage yesterday told The Island that their association hadn’t received an opportunity to discuss specific accusations made against the media though Prime Minister Wickremesinghe summoned representatives of various media organizations for a meeting at Temple Trees several months back. "We sought a meeting with PM Wickremesinghe soon after his first outburst directed at the media after the last parliamentary polls in August, 2015."

In a statement dated July 28, Ruhunage emphasized that there couldn’t be any issue in respect of conducting investigations into corruption involving journalists. Ruhunage said that they should be investigated and proper action taken expeditiously.

Both Ruhunage and Duminda Sampath, General Secretary of the association said that those who genuinely believed some journalists had deliberately distorted news to undermine the government, a particular political party or individual could be reported to relevant authorities. Both the Press Complaints Commission and Sri Lanka Press Council accepted complaints in respect of media coverage.

The association said that remedial measures should be taken through the Press Complaints Commission which is the legally constituted body to inquire into such matters. However, in case a particular complainant wasn’t satisfied with the way the Press Complaints Commission or the Sri Lanka Press Council had handled his or her complaint, the judiciary could be moved against the journalist concerned.

Since the change of government in January, 2015, members of the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe administration as well as the JVP on several occasions accused journalists of receiving various perks, privileges and bribes during the previous administration.

Premier Wickremesinhe also accused a section of the media of trying to bring former President Mahinda Rajapaksa back to power and also causing turmoil through coverage of events in the Northern Province. The government closed down Police Media Unit in the wake of simmering dispute over the reportage of the arrest of former LTTE cadres in May this year.

SLWJA said that a section of the media along with civil society organizations had campaigned strongly against the previous administration and facilitated the then Opposition project due to them being badly affected by the Rajapaksa administration approach towards the media. Alleging that Premier Wickremesinghe had directed personal attacks against certain media individuals, including editors and issued warnings on several occasions, the association stressed as the Premier of Sri Lanka, Mr Wickremesinhe shouldn’t adopt such an approach,.

Commenting on Premier Wickremesinghe’s latest attack on the media during a public address in Kandy, the association said that the UNP leader should reveal how he expected to teach a lesson to the media. Strongly condemning the PM’s statement, the association alleged that the Premier’s comments on the media were in a way threatened the fourth estate.

Ruhunage said that the association was ready to meet Premier Wickremesinghe and other leaders to discuss issues pertaining to media.

Recently, President Maithripala Sirisena alleged that those who had been campaigning against the government received about 80 per cent of the total media coverage on a daily basis whereas the new administration’s development projects and other measures taken for the well-being of people were allocated the remaining 20 per cent.

Duminda Sampath said that all complaints in respect of the media could be lodged with the Press Complaints Commission.

Acting Chairman of Sri Lanka Press Council Niroshan Thambawita yesterday told The Island that the SLPC accepted complaints in respect of print media reports.

Responding to a query, Thambawita said that as the SLPC had been established in accordance with a Parliamentary Act, it could exercise the powers of a District Court though their primary aim was to take remedial measures through the consensus of parties to the conflict. However, the SLPC lacked the authority to inquire into conduct of the electronic media, Thambawita admitted.

Thambawita said former Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa was among those who sought their intervention. "We also received complaints from Minister John Seneviratne as well as the JVP."

Much hyped march a damp squib! Less than 4000 take part- Mahinda travels by jeep defeating purpose of the march !

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News- 29.July.2016, 10.00PM) The Rajapakse brigand that bragged and boasted they would gather a crowd of a million on  the streets to participate in their much hyped march could only muster about 4000 supporters, based on reports reaching Lanka e news.
However , the State intelligence division has reported, a crowd of about 3500 supporters only took part though LeN reporters revealed there was a maximum crowd of 4000 supporters.
The most ludicrous spectacle  of this melodramatic march was , Mahinda Rajapakse the megalomaniac Machiavellian leader himself taking part while travelling in a jeep.(vide photo). Mahinda who is nearly 73 years old and with obvious signs of senile decay mentally and physically perhaps found it difficult to walk. Mahinda who thinks he has conquered  death is unable to conquer his diseases  for which he is taking a whole bag load of medication.
Mahinda had instructed that  the march that halted midway shall be  be resumed second day morning from Utuwan Kanda, where  Sardiel the notorious rogue of the past resided , and it is the view of the people , Mahinda chose the right place to resume their march , so that  all the Sardiels (Robbing Hoods) including Mahinda Rajapakse could pay homage to the Utuwan Kanda Sardiel before resuming their journey.
Meanwhile the people of Rathupaswala, Gampaha  who were gunned down earlier on by Rajapakses for taking to the streets are in the ready to ‘welcome’ the Rajapakses on the streets when their march is passing by in the next few days .It is significant to note  , it was on the  1st of August , that is three years ago the Rajapakses committed the brutal murders at Rathupaswala .In other words , this 1 st of August marks the third death anniversary of the Rathupaswala victims who were cruelly and ruthlessly murdered by the Rajapakse regime.
Incidentally , Mahinda yesterday said , during his tenure of office court restraining orders were not taken against such protest marches. Of course the Rathupaswala residents fully endorse that view, for during his period  they say, he simply liquidated their brothers by directly and lawlessly gunning them down with bullets .

‘Neither journalists nor citizens have a right to question us’ -Dallas the born buffalo turned human following plastic surgery

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News -28.July.2016, 11.30PM) The barbaric nature and bestial traits of Dallas Alahaperuma who functioned as the theoretician for the  Medamulana Rajapakses during their nefarious decade have still not changed going by his conduct at a media briefing on the 26 th.
When Dallas was criticizing  the present government and alleged that the  latter  by impeding their  march  to be staged , is now not following the lichchavi traditions and taking barbaric actions , a  journalist questioned Dallas whether his own  government did not obstruct the protests staged by the opposition at that time  , Dallas’ baser barbaric and brutal traits surfaced with Dallas furiously  ‘barking’ at the journalist ,and performing a disgraceful  devil dance at the briefing.
Journalist :
Are you telling during the period of your government , it did not obstruct the protests of the opposition , and permitted the  play grounds to be used .
Dallas :
Let us assume  such things  did happen. But does this government have a right to do the same thing? I confirm again and again that did not happen. Even after this government was  elected and one year seven months have elapsed , the journalists let  alone  citizens of the country  have  a right to question .I am feeling sorry for you over your question .When  you are asking whether the previous government did not engage in such acts , you are representing the government group. You must instead be neutral.
Journalist’s question :
Is there anything wrong in asking , isn’t what is happening today the same as what happened then ?
Dallas :
Don’t support them , Don’t appear on behalf of the government . If the government that spoke of Lichchavi traditions and policies is now conducting itself barbarically and brutally , it should be criticized. Hence, don’t point an accusing finger at us .
Journalist :
Even your government before being installed in power made various promises , yet your government did  everything that ran counter to your promises . Therefore , how can questioning  on those falsehoods be wrong ?
Dallas:
We have all along expressed  our mistakes. The people had given us the right  verdict for those mistakes.
It is a pity that scoundrels like Dallas Alahaperuma who allege it is political revenge when questioned about their  white Van  abductions , abduction and murders , disappearances, murders of parliamentarians, cold blooded ghastly murder of editors on the main road , daylight robbery of public assets committed during the nefarious decade of Dallas’ corrupt brutal government,  and who organize much hyped  protest march  did not allow anybody to question him  about the crimes , corruption and brutalities perpetrated  by  his  ousted despotic lawless government.
What Dallas says is nobody has a right  even to question them . While Dallas is speaking  so arrogantly and uncaringly when out of power  now, it is the government of his  that in the past murdered , broke the limbs of journalists and set  fire to media Institutions when it was questioned over the criminalities.
When these corrupt scoundrels are questioned , what they say is , the media should be neutral and non partisan. Today ,the journalists who fell victims to the brutal  , murderous and violent actions of these scoundrels are not even permitted to question them, because the journalists who question them are accused of being partial towards  the present government .
When Dallas was a journalist for a while working at a place in the Borella supermarket , his mentor Sunil Madhawa Premathileke wrote an article in  his newspaper . Let us refresh the memory of Dallas on what he wrote …
To reveal the truth there is no neutral stance. That is between the truth and untruths there is no median. Either you have to be on the side of the truth or untruth.
That was how Dallas’ mentor wrote in their  own newspaper.( Of course Sunil Madhawa was also one of those who stooped to do the sordid biddings of Rajapakses in the past . But that is another story) . Hence It would do immense good to Dallas if he searches for that piece of paper and reads it  today .
If Dallas and his satanic government have not committed arson on the Lanka e news portal , at least we could have helped him with that news report from our  library which was reduced to ashes by the conflagration.
The crimes , corruption and brutalities  Dallas Alahaperuma treats as ‘ mistakes’ are indeed most weird …
Abduction and murder of Prageeth Eknelyagoda; murder of Lasantha Wickremetunge in broad daylight; abducting Sivaram and committing  murder; Breaking Poddala’s limbs after abduction ; MPs murdered on the main roads;  killing of their own advisors ; abducting five students who were successful at the GCE adv. Level who secured eligibility to enter University and killing them after demanding extortion ; setting  fire to media Institutions;  exploding  claymore mines ;imposing unlawful bans; killing of tourists  by the chairman of government bodies , and raping young women  ; after raping as many as hundred young girls , holding parties  to celebrate that with the participation of VIPs of his government.

To Dallas those grave and heinous crimes, and criminalities are ‘ mistakes,’ and even questioning them is wrong.
If only the  administration you  and your  group  are demanding along with the change of the national flag has  truly come into  existence, barbaric and shameless scoundrels like you and your clan of rascals running  amok contaminating the whole country and defecating on the national flag  would have been the order of the day.
In the circumstances , what journalists should do for such bluffer duffer politicos who get infuriated  and refuse to answer is , unrelentingly go after them and question unendingly . The whole nation is intently watching  to learn what action the media is going to take against the latest  dastardly and disgraceful tactics adopted by Dallas .

Gaza’s sick pay price of blockade

Gaza has had chronic shortages of medicines as a result of political division between the West Bank and Gaza, as well as Israel’s siege.Eyad Al BabaAPA images

Isra Saleh el-Namey-27 July 2016

Huda Jalal is still mourning the death of her baby in late May.

The 32-year-old went into premature labor and gave birth before her baby’s lungs had developed sufficiently.

The hospital put the baby, Sami, in an incubator at which point he should have received a Betamethasone injection. Betamethasone is used to stimulate growth of the lungs in premature babies.

But the drug, which is not expensive according to Mahmoud Deeb Daher, head of the World Health Organization’s Gaza sub-office, was not available. Sami passed away after only one day in the incubator.
“I know that it is not easy to give birth in the eighth month, but there are drugs and advanced medical care that can help save lives,” Jalal, whose two other children suffered no complications at birth, told The Electronic Intifada.

Hamsa Abu Ajeen, a doctor at al-Aqsa hospital in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip where Jalal lost her baby, said there is a shortage of medicine as a result of the Israeli blockade on Gaza, now nearly a decade old. Increasingly, the Ministry of Health in Gaza is struggling with a lack of funds for drugs and vital equipment. The funding shortfall is a direct consequence of the siege harming the economy.

Israel, furthermore, prohibits a whole host of goods and construction materials from entering Gaza, citing “security reasons” and the possibility of “dual use,” military and civilian.

But the list is in some cases vague and general, including things like “communications equipment,” and while medicines and vital health care products are not meant to be included, X-ray machines and other visual imaging equipment have proven difficult to import and are often held up in Israel.

Putting babies at risk

International observers like the World Health Organization, the United Nations and individual politicians have on numerous occasions reported that the blockade negatively affects the delivery of medical services in Gaza and leads to a shortage of potentially life-saving drugs.

Abu Ajeen said Betamethasone injections should be given to women undergoing difficult pregnancies and who are likely to give premature birth, and should preferably be administered before and not after birth. If administered in time, babies’ lives stand a better chance of being saved. Betamethasone can also be administered after birth as would have been done in Sami’s case had it been available.

“At our ward, the lack of very important drugs, injections and medical equipment has eroded our ability to offer advanced medical care to our patients,” Abu Ajeen told The Electronic Intifada.

There is not enough medicine for injections to stimulate uterus contractions to accelerate labor, the doctor said, while there is a limited number of working electrocardiogram machines to check the hearts of newborn babies. The ward also suffers a shortage of incubators and beds compared to local need.
“In many cases, we have had to discharge women who have just given birth to free up bed space, even though the woman might still need medical attention,” the doctor said.

In addition, frequent power cuts — Gaza’s authorities are unable to import the necessary equipment to fix the Strip’s sole power plant — and the shortage of fuel to power generators mean doctors are always concerned that incubators and other life-saving equipment will stop functioning, Abu Ajeen said.

Critical shortage

According to Munir al-Bursh, head of the pharmacy department at Gaza’s Ministry of Health, hospitals, pharmacies and clinics in Gaza are short of 149 medicines, equipping them with only 69 percent of what is needed.

The depleted stores of drugs include some used to treat chronic diseases like hemophilia, thalassemia, cancer and blood diseases, al-Bursh said. Also, a severe shortage of vaccines and antibiotics has further hindered doctors’ abilities to treat their patients.

In response, an increasing number of Gaza’s patients try to seek medical care abroad, but they are stymied again by the Israeli blockade and the near-continuous closure on the Egyptian side at Rafah, the sole crossing available to the Strip’s nearly 1.9 million residents.

But it is not just the Israeli blockade that is causing shortages. The political division between Hamas, which administers internal affairs in the Gaza Strip, and Fatah, which heads the US and EU-backed Palestinian Authority in the West Bank plays a role.

Dr. Ashraf al-Qedra, the health ministry spokesperson in Gaza, said his ministry does not receive its agreed allocation of medicines from the Palestinian Authority Ministry of Health in the occupied West Bank. He said Gaza gets only 16 percent of what it ought to receive of drugs and other medical requirements.

“Gaza should have 40 percent of its medical needs provided from the West Bank. We get less than 20 percent. This means that we are in imminent danger of a health crisis that could put patients’ lives at risk,” he said.

The lack of funds and the depletion of both human and material resources have forced the ministry to terminate some of its essential medical services, said al-Qedra.

Wael Alyan has his own complaint in this regard.

The 43-year-old has suffered from kidney failure for five years and needs to have dialysis treatment four times a week. “It’s hard to adjust to this new life,” Alyan told The Electronic Intifada. “Every time, I make sure that I arrive early at the hospital to wait for the treatment.”

He hopes to have surgery outside Gaza, but for now he cannot afford the cost. He’s heard of patients who were lucky enough to find a suitable kidney replacement, and he looks to the day when he can end his own ordeal.

“I hope I can one day secure the funds needed to undergo this operation so that I can lead a normal life again,” he said.

Looking for solutions

The difficulty in securing enough stores of medicine has propelled a team of pharmacists to look for methods to prolong the life-cycle of some vital drugs.

The team worked for four years and finally succeeded in validating — allowing drugs to be used beyond their stated expiration dates — 23 kinds of drugs used in treating cancer and kidney disease, and for which hospitals do not have alternatives should they run out.

Nahed Shaat, the head of the team, said the group gained valuable insight from past American military experiences.

“The ghastly reality of Gaza has pushed us to look for other alternatives, and the attempts made by the [Department of Defense] in 1986 to validate 122 drugs were very useful to guide us in our own project,” Shaat said.

Naima Siam, a member of the team, noted that the process is not easy, because they have to follow very strict rules prescribed by the World Health Organization.

“Each drug has to be validated on its own terms and in the right way. So far, we have been able to extend life-cycles by up to three months,” she said.

She estimates that the team’s work has saved the Ministry of Health some $200,000 and is giving patients greater access to essential drugs.

“The wellbeing of our patients is our first priority,” said Siam, who voiced anger at both Israel and the West Bank Palestinian Authority for policies that keep vital medicines away from Gaza.
“The right to access drugs and working medical services should be respected for all Gazans, not be held hostage to this political game.”

'Starvation and bombing': Civilians stranded as battle for Aleppo rages

Residents in rebel areas face worsening food, fuel shortages and constant danger; many say they have no choice but to stay

ALEPPO, Syria – In besieged rebel-held Aleppo, the situation has been deteriorating day by day. Since the last rebel-held supply road into the city was cut earlier this month, the price of food has skyrocketed.
At first, prices doubled. After a few days, they tripled. Now, some two weeks after the siege was fully imposed, certain foods and key goods have shot up by as much as 500 percent. Petrol has all but run out.

There are no taxis, buses or minibuses on the once busy streets. People either wait for hours to try and find transport or they have resigned themselves to walking despite the danger of being out in the street and in full view of warplanes that have continued to bomb as the siege has intensified.

Omar Khmis, from the rebel-held neighbourhood of Mashhad, told Middle East Eye he spent four to six hours every day just trying to buy bread.

“We are out of fuel, vegetables and fruits. Everything is gone,” he said. “We eat only one meal a day to survive because I have no way to earn a living anymore. I have some money to spend but it will be gone soon.”

On Thursday, Russia, a key ally of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, announced that it would open humanitarian corridors to allow people to leave, but only a dozen people reportedly managed to cross over before renewed fighting blocked the routes.

The government and UK-based watchdog Syrian Observatory for Human Rights have blamed the rebels for preventing access, but sources on the ground insist that pro-government forces shelled a key crossing shortly after they urged civilians to flee.

Scores have now been left stranded, but for many who have had to endure years of brutal bombardment by Assad and Russia, leaving to government-held areas of Aleppo sounds like a fate worse than death.

“I have no choice but to stay,” Khaled Tahhan, a resident who has to walk for hours every day to try and get bread for his children, told MEE.

“Even now [that they say we] have a corridor to cross to the other side of the city that is held by the regime side, I would rather die here than be in a regime area. They destroyed and killed half of my neighbourhood and neighbours.”

He said that he was worried for his son if they left, in case the government imprisoned him and forced him to serve in the army, as has reportedly happened to scores of young men across Syria. But many others say they fear what will happen to them if they stay ahead of an anticipated tightening of the siege and escalation in fighting to retake Aleppo.

According to Tahhan, one of his co-workers tried to cross to the government side at the Bustan Qasr humanitarian crossing, but was stopped by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) that told people they could not pass for security reasons after shelling hit the area, killing one.

Jamela, an Aleppo resident, told MEE that she refused to leave her home for years despite the fighting, but the siege has made things unbearable.

“I stayed even when the shelling was crazy, but at least there was somehow food, water and electricity,” Jamela said.

“Now I can tell you, it's totally the opposite. Not only is there bombing but there are shortages of everything. There is very little safe drinking water and the generator is now off. On Thursday, the last working generator in our neighbourhood went off so now there is no more electricity.

“I plan to leave. I can’t handle any more starvation and bombing; it's too much and too big a burden to carry,” she said.

Like Tahhan’s co-worker, Jamela tried to cross from Bustan Qasr on Thursday. She said she got there at 6am and waited until 2pm, but was unable to cross because the FSA would not let her and were warning that the government would attack the area. At 12:30pm, two shells fell, wounding two and killing one, so she decided to return home, although she said she would keep trying to cross to the government side.

“I have had enough of being scared of seeing sudden and horrible bombings,” she said. “It's been a long time since I spent a calm day and was able to rest.”

Aleppo was once Syria’s biggest city, with a pre-war population of more than two million. Since the war started, it has been devastated and some areas entirely flattened. The government, which for years was on its back foot in the war, has been bolstered by thousands of Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, Iranian financial support and, since last September, the support of Russian planes that have pounded rebel areas.

In recent days, attacks appear to have taken particular aim at hospitals and medical facilities. Between last Thursday and Saturday, air strikes by Russia or the government hit four hospitals, the last remaining blood bank in rebel-held eastern Aleppo and a forensic pathology lab.

This Friday, air strikes also hit a maternity hospital in the Idlib province that borders Aleppo.

International charity Save the Children said that at least two people were killed and three others wounded in the attack.

During the war, rebels have regularly shelled the government-held western side of the city, earlier this month killing at least 23 people and wounding 140 as pro-government forces advanced on the Castello Road, the last remaning route into the rebel-held side.

Khmis said that as a result of fighting on the eastern side, he had no access to health care near him and will have to move to another area in case there is an emergency.

“I used to go to Abd Aziz hospital in Maade Street, but it's out of service now because of a warplane strike,” Khmis said.

He said that recently he has seen an increase in bombing, with many barrel bombs dropping on his neighbourhood this month. Khmis added that he had personally seen more than 20 strikes and knew people who had been killed and wounded.

“I have heard of humanitarian corridors that have been opened by the regime, but I don't have any intention of crossing because the regime will just hit us when we try to cross through any of these corridors,” Khmis said.

“They might not catch me and put me in jail immediately, but for sure they will after settling in a government area for a while. I don’t want to die in a prison..."

Opposition “is a crime to them and they will take revenge on those who have moved to their area. I’m sure of this."

INDONESIA executed four prisoners convicted for drug offenses on Friday, despite international calls this past week to put a halt to executions.

The country’s deputy attorney-general Noor Rachmad toldmembers of the press outside the Nusakambangan prison that one Indonesian and three Africans were executed by firing squad not long after midnight, local time, during a thunderstorm.

“It was not a pleasant thing, but it was to implement the law,” he said, adding: “The executions are only aimed at halting drug crimes.”

Earlier this week, it was announced that there were to be 14 prisoners executed in this latest round, but Rachmad said authorities have yet to decide on the fate of 10 others currently on death row, comprising citizens of India, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe.

On Friday, an official said that the planned executions would go through “in stages”, declining to specify a time frame, reported the Jakarta Globe.

Among the four executed were: Indonesian Freddy Budiman; Seck Osmane from Senegal; and Nigerians Michael Titus Igweh and Humphrey Jefferson Ejike.

The bodies of Osmane and Igweh will be flown back to their respective countries, while Ejike will be buried in Indonesia.

In Ejike’s case, his legal team alleged that his execution was unjust.

According to Reuters, Ejike’s legal counsel Raynov Tumorang said in a text message: “At this stage, we can only say that we are extremely disappointed with the fact that Jeff was executed.”

“There is strong evidence of torture and he was not given a fair trial. Racism towards our client can be seen in the court decision,” he added.

This past week, the respective governments and family members of the death row inmates have appealed to the Indonesian government to spare the lives of the prisoners, but their pleas appear to have fallen on deaf ears.

Human rights and lawyer groups have also questioned whether the prisoners were given fair trial, in addition to raising allegations of abuse and torture.
