Wigneswaran, Sumanthiran eye to eye again

suma_wigi

( February 21, 2016, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The battle between Northern Province Chief Minister C.V. Wigneshwaran and Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthiran continues.

The latest was after the new Northern Province Governor Reginald Cooray assumed duties on Friday. As politicians, officials and Tamil Parliamentarians were walking up to the Governor, the Chief Minister noticed that Mr. Sumanthiran was standing behind him. “Why are you silent these days? Aren’t there any allegations against me?” the Chief Minister asked.

Mr. Sumanthiran promptly responded: “Nettrikann thirandalam kuttram, kuttram than” (A fault is a fault even it is seen by the third eye) – a reference to the belief that God Shiva opens his third eye when he wants to destroy if he is challenged).

They walked away thereafter.

But, the differences between the Chief Minister and the rest of the TNA are currently the main topics discussed among the people in the north.

The Struggle For Power; The Real Stakes & Prospects For Freedom In The Land Of Lanka

The Struggle for Power
There is an escalating, on-going struggle for state power between the forces aligned with the Ranil-Sirisena government and the Joint Opposition being forged and led by Mahinda Rajapakse. This will prove to be a decisive and extremely consequential struggle. That is to say, only one side can win and exercise dictatorship and hegemony over society. The space for cohabitation and coexistence within the various fractions and parties of the ruling class is evaporating in the heat of the bitter contest for power. This is because the Land of Lanka is being sliced up, economically, politically and strategically, by various contending foreign predator powers, out to get an economic stranglehold and, thereby, a strategic foothold in the island. The internal struggle between these two fractions of the ruling class is driven and determined by this overarching dynamic of inter-imperialist rivalry and contention. This is the concrete context, and the international content, of the internal power struggle.
High Stakes
WigneswaranThe struggle for power is for high stakes. This is with major world imperialist powers and rising regional hegemonic powers, aligned as various blocs and alliances, contending for gaining strategic influence, leverage and advantage over the island. There is intensifying rivalry and contention for global economic dominance and strategic superiority between the US-led Western Bloc as against both China and Russia. This contention feeds into regional rivalries for asserting political-economic dominance and military-strategic superiority. It’s like a chess board of sheer chaos and anarchy as each contending power fires the flames of war to gain its advantage at the expense of the other. Every country is being internally divided and mobilized behind these competing, rival agendas.

The ‘Lackey’ tag and a prime minister’s anger

The Sunday Times Sri LankaSunday, February 21, 2016

These are curious times indeed. Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his supporters who treated the Sri Lankan media and the legal system as their family hunting ground are struggling to emerge as newfound libertarians. We witness with enormous skepticism their ‘strutting and fretting’ on the political stage to protect the propriety of appointment to the Office of the Attorney General and (quite piquantly) to safeguard media freedoms.
Repression in its varied forms

It was once a great game of the Rajapaksa regime to unleash its salivating media bloodhounds for the express purpose of savaging its critics. Quite apart from the editors and journalists killed, Rajapaksa propagandists attacked independent opinion to an unprecedented extent. This columnist has had first-hand experience of such calumny as a result of raising legitimate questions on Rule of Law failures.

If these questions had been addressed then, Sri Lanka would have been spared the supreme indignity of being lectured to on accountability by world powers who, to put it mildly, do not practise what they preach. The indignant reactions of United Kingdom ministers and British newspapers over the recent finding of a United Nations investigative body on the ‘arbitrary detention’ of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange are examples enough.

But returning closer home, even an incomparably degenerate Rajapaksa decade does not mean that media repression cannot be practised in other, subtler ways. Some of those Rajapaksa media bloodhounds are now accommodated within the Sirisena-Wickremesinghe government to practise old mischief but for a different paymaster. We await their amusing acrobatics.

The independent regulation of media

More worryingly, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe’s remarks this week that erring journalists of the private media would be dismissed and frequencies given to private broadcasting stations withdrawn ‘if they do not behave’ raise several concerns.

To be clear, the improvement of media ethics is no small matter. Political agendas, sexism, racism and at times, deplorable crudity (such as the needless controversy over the operatic rendition of ‘Danno Budunnge’) covertly characterize the manipulation of news and commentary. A professional industry response is seen to some extent in regard to the print media. But the electronic media has yet to initiate this discussion.

On its own part, the Government must heed the admirable warning issued by the Supreme Court almost two decades ago, that ‘the airwaves/frequencies are public property and a Government is only a trustee for the public’ (see Determination Re the Broadcasting Authority Bill, S.D. No 1/97 – 15/97, 5th May 1997). The Court threw out a Broadcasting Authority proposed by the Kumaratunga Presidency on the basis that it allowed for excessive political interference. The regulating and licensing of media is best left to an independent Authority. The sight of the Prime Minister threatening to take swift punitive action against journalists and withdraw frequencies of broadcasting stations is unnerving to say the least. This is antithetical to the very concept of ‘good governance’ which his Government so loudly if not hysterically espouses.

Failure to reach out to citizens

Overall, there is a particular trend becoming visible. As the inflammatory rhetoric of the Rajapaksa lobby gathers strength, its complaint of marginalization in Parliament resonates with force among some. The absence of an effective opposition on the floor of the House is a contributory factor. Corruption cases are only filed against Rajapaksa proponents while equally corrupt worthies in the Government are running free.

Meanwhile the Wickremesinghe-Sirisena coalition appears unable to reach out to ordinary people and clearly explain its difficulties not only in regard to economic woes but also the acutely sensitive question of war-time accountability. This recklessly courts a blow back from the citizenry, stoked by supporters of the former president, many of whom are fifth columnists secretively biding their time in government ranks while others perform as agent provocateurs.

For however much the government may say that the constitutional reform process is broad-based, the reality is quite the converse. It is much the same for the reconciliation process, driven largely from Colombo, operating within limited time frames and generally characterized by confusion worse confounded. Immediate measures in consonance with the Rule of Law such as the expeditious trial of detainees under anti-terror laws or release if held without charges are studiously bypassed. The Audit Bill and the (Cabinet approved) Right to Information Bill still await passage in Parliament. These laws will transform the functioning of government far more effectively than convoluted constitutional reforms.

A dangerous path to tread

These issues are only aggravated by Prime Ministerial tirades against journalists and also against Sri Lanka’s powerful medical lobby over the proposed Economic and Technology Cooperative Agreement (ECTA) with India. Opponents of ECTA argue that this will flood Sri Lanka’s service sector with Indian professionals. Quite apart from the substantive import of objections in regard to what essentially remains a framework for an agreement, the Government’s response leaves much to be desired.

The Prime Minister resorts to a familiar refrain that for every person who comes onto the streets to oppose the ECTA, he can bring out double that number. Surely this should not be the clarion call of an administration elected to power just last August? Should not documents in regard to such matters be readily available for public scrutiny and consultations held with professionals rather than reacting so provocatively?

Prime Minister Wickremesinghe’s annoyance appears to be driven by the fact that some journalists and doctors were ‘lackeys’ of the Rajapaksa regime. Yet similarly obnoxious media ‘lackeys’ are now part of this coalition administration. This begs the question as to whether it is not the ‘lackey’ tag per se but the opposition to government policies which is the rub. Other onetime ‘lackeys’ who have (presumably seeing the error of their ways) chosen to tag along with this dispensation are exempted from such tirades. Undoubtedly this is a dangerous path to tread for a Government flamboyantly elected on ‘good governance’ promises.

In the final result, absent significant course correction, the deterioration of confidence in Sri Lanka’s political leadership is inevitable. This will determine the country’s eventual electoral trajectory, notwithstanding glowing tributes from abroad. Before the 2015 Presidential poll, clear warning signals were ignored by the Rajapaksa regime to their downfall. It appears that this Government is equally and culpably blind to potential perils.

Media At It, And At Media

Mahinda_Rajapaksa_3Over time, people will remember only the Government leaders’ condemnation of the media. They would not either remember, or want to remember and recall context or purpose. It’s where all campaigns in support of ‘media freedom’ begin, now as in the past. It’s where the real problem would begin. At that stage, the media and the public at large would assume that the Government was out to suffocate media freedom. They otherwise would continue to wonder as to where they had gone wrong in advising and cautioning the media to be free, but fair.

by N. Sathiya Moorthy
News paper printing press
( February 21, 2016, Chennai, Sri Lanka Guardian) It’s anybody’s guess why former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has taken his time, targeting his successor-government on the question of ‘media freedom’. Maybe, it also signals the next phase in his fight with the back to the wall, where he would be spared nothing and he could spare nothing.

It was Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe who launched the new government’s early criticism of the nation’s media, both print and electronic. Having relied more on the ‘social media’ than the traditional forms in a way, he could afford to take on the nation’s ‘media moghuls’ in a way.

In particular, the PM has named the names of some national dailies more than once, as the villains of the piece – and of, national peace and harmony.

Yet, it was surprising that President Maithripala Sirisena should be referring to sections of the media abusing the freedom granted to them, by law and also practice – that too, in his National Day address. Possibly, it was unprecedented. Yet, unlike PM Ranil Wickremesinghe, who warned of action if they failed to behave, Sirisena only advised the media that any future government could ‘again curtail’ the same, if they abused it now.

It’s not that PM Wickremesinghe has been making sweeping attacks on the nation’s media. He has only been telling them not to whip up racism and other ills back into the Sri Lankan society, which is still recovering from the decades of ethnic dispute, war and violence – and may take many more years before restoring ‘normalcy’, whatever be.

Countering Wahabism – Part III

By Izeth Hussain –February 20, 2016

Colombo Telegraph
An effective strategy in countering Wahabism and other forms of Islamic fundamentalism would be to get the Muslim mind to focus on the question of what would happen if fundamentalism comes to prevail as the norm in the greater part of the Islamic world or in its entirety, displacing the current norm of orthodox Islam. Stoning to death for adultery would become a frequent widespread occurrence. A series of Rizana Nafeeks will be beheaded every Friday all over the Islamic world. Rape will flourish because hardly any female will dare to allege rape: according to hudud ordinances, which apply to offences against God and not just man, a female who alleges rape is thereby confessing that she has committed adultery and will have to suffer the consequences, which could include being stoned to death. Thieves, even petty thieves, will have their hands cut off. Instrumental music, films and television will all be banned. All females will be attired in black burqas. I won’t add to that list of horrors because two conclusions are already clear enough: conversions to Islam will sink almost to zero and wherever possible some or many Muslims will become atheists or convert to other religions. The moral to be drawn is also clear enough: Islam has to be saved from Wahabism and its clones.
Muslim JIn the first part of this article I argued that the most important reason why Wahabism should be countered is that it is unIslamic. That argument is fully consistent with the position of orthodox Islam. Muslims in general accept that the most authoritative voice of orthodox Islam is that of Al Azhar in Cairo. All Muslims should take a look at that brief video in which a top Al Azhar cleric states the essentials against Wahabism. Different names are used but the underlying reality is Wahabism. It is a slander to say that orthodox Muslims engage in saint worship. Those who unreasonably accuse others of polytheism will themselves be adjudged polytheists in the next world and they will suffer the consequences. The cleric referred to the famous hadith according to which the Prophet showed a stunning prescience in predicting that the Horn of the Devil would be manifested in the Najd. Sheikh Abdul Wahab came from the Najd. So in my advocacy that Wahabism be countered I have behind me the might and majesty of orthodox Islam.   Read More

Opposition builds up to the creeping Indianisation of SL

* Govt’s secretive ETCA preparations backfire
* GMOA leads opposition to Indianisation of SL
* PM thrashing about in desperation flogs media again

article_image

It was the GMOA that blew the lid off one of the government’s closely guarded secrets – the economic and technical cooperation pact that was being planned with India. They published on their website the draft of the Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement that had been given to them by the government. For the first time, the public and even the media became aware of what the government was negotiating with India. The term ‘negotiated’ would be misnomer in this case because there is nothing in the agreement to negotiate. Like the aborted Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) which the former Congress Party government was pushing, the present Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) also envisages trade in goods, trade in services and investment. But the difference this time is that the much vaunted ETCA is not a real agreement at all but an empty shell which provides only a ‘framework’ for future negotiations.
It’s actual name is not ‘Indo-Sri Lanka Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement’ but ‘Indo-Sri Lanka Economic and Technical Cooperation Framework Agreement’ with the word ‘Framework’ in italics for emphasis. Nothing has been said in this draft framework agreement about the specific provisions relating to the trade in goods, trade in services and investment. If the present draft of ETCA is only a framework without any specifics, the question arises why the government took such elaborate precautions to keep it under wraps. Deputy Minister Harsha de Silva addressing a press conference on Friday said for the first time that there is no agreement as such but only a framework. But he did not explain why this non-agreement was kept such a closely guarded secret.

Another matter that the government has to clarify is, if this proposed pact is only a framework for future negotiations, why sign such a document at all? This writer has not yet met anybody who has heard of a bilateral agreement to agree on certain things later. The earlier negotiations on CEPA fell through due the inability to agree on the specifics. Is it the case that the government thought that even if negotiations fall though again, there will at least be the ‘framework’ agreement to keep the marriage together? This has all the hallmarks of a forced Indian marriage with Sri Lanka as the recalcitrant bride. There are questions over what will take place under this non-specific framework agreement. The signs that have manifested themselves in that respect are not good.

Kumarasinghe Sirisena has sent his son to study in America on ‘call termination’ extortion monies..!

-His assets shall be probed

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News- 20.Feb.2016, 8.00 AM) Kumarasinghe Sirisena the chairman of SLT/Mobitel has sent his son to America for studies out of the extortion payments collected by him from ‘call termination’ racketeers , according to reports reaching Lanka e news inside information division.
It is after Kumarasinghe became the chairman of SLT/Mobitel he had admitted his son to the University ‘Florida Institute of Technology.’ The entire expenditure in this regard is being met by the call termination tracketeers along wth  a most notorious wheeler dealer who jointly with the Rajapakses robbed public funds.
This wheeler dealer is a most close bosom pal of Kumarasinghe , and last Sunday both of them had boozed together in Kumarasinghe’s house. This wheeler dealer had told Kumarasinghe , he could not attend the inauguration ceremony of Mahinda Rajapakse’s new office  , but he saw to it a sum of Rs. 1 million is sent for the ceremony, while adding ‘after all, we earned and prospered because of him.’
To Kumarasinghe , his wheeler dealer crook and bosom pal  helping Mahinda Rajapakse  (who is  an enemy of his brother)  is not a matter for concern , because his full gaze is  fixed on his illicit black money  earnings from the call termination racket.
These crooked dealers who ought to obtain an  E 1 line or SIP trunk line , are via the VOIP technology on the sly securing the calls without payment  thereby depriving the SLT Co . of its revenue. These dealers are pocketing the entire   collection secretly.

Ordinarily , for an IDD call per minute , a sum of Rs. 14.00 must be paid to the SLT alone, whereas this call is sold on the sly at a much lesser levy of Rs. 7.00 . A part of this pecuniary gain goes to line the pocket of the ‘lokka’ (chief) of the SLT as extortion payment .
These racketeers through the web grant membership to  the Sri Lankans abroad , and based on the passport copy furnished  , a foreign  SIM card is issued to him/her. Thereafter about Rs. 5000.00 is collected ,  and the calls taken under that number by that individual are treated  as though they are local calls in respect of that customer. That is , the IDD call is charged at local call rate.
Might we make special mention ,all these rackets can be carried out only until these call termination racketeers of SLT/Mobitel are not seized. Intriguingly , though there is a division equipped with the apparatus to nab these racketeers , Kumarasinghe the chairman has de activated that  division , and transferred out the chief of that division who had foreign training.
It will  therefore be in the best interests of all if those conducting the investigations also immediately focus on the assets of Kumarasinghe , and probe into it. The root of the evil shall be struck at . Merely lopping off the branches will only permit the evil to re-grow with greater vigor and vitality.
(There is a possibility for the SLT/Mobitel chairman to ban this news report using his powers and influence , and deprive  the SLT /Mobitel customers of the right of  access to the website. We have therefore taken steps to publish this report in toto via our facebook.)

The Law Continues To Crawl In Weerawansa Saga

by Nirmala Kannangara-Saturday, February 20, 2016
Weerawansa and wife Shashi Weerawansa… ‘Some are more equal than others’?
The saying ‘all are equal but some are more equal than others’ appears to be a reality today when considering the alleged passport frauds of MP Wimal Weerawansa and his wife Shashi Weerawansa.
The husband and wife duo are accused of using fraudulent travel documents, but questions have
been raised as to why the law enforcement authorities have not taken swift action against these two law-breakers and brought them to book. Would this inaction apply to ordinary citizens of this country as well?
According to Assistant Controller (Legal), Department of Immigration and Emigration, Lakshan de Soyza, using an inactive passport to travel overseas is an offence but the department does not usually take action against the passport holder as such cases are considered oversights. However De Soyza said obtaining a passport by producing forged documents is an offence and those guilty of this would face imprisonment of not less than two years and not more than five years. “In case of an attempt to travel abroad with an inactive passport, we ask the passport holder to bring the legal travel document. But if a person continues to do so, he or she will be dealt with severely,” De Soyza said.
Wimal Weerawansa was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in October last year for using an inactive travel document (passport) to leave the country. He was later given bail by the Additional Magistrate, Negombo.

( February 21, 2016, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Former Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunga appointed by his cousin, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, challenged the Government and demanded they meet him either in Ukraine or at the Russian Foreign office to ‘bring to a closure’ the allegations against him with regard to the arms deal he is alleged to have had with the pro Russian rebels in Ukraine several years back. “My financial assets have been frozen by the Government, and I am recommencing my tea business in tough times. I did not kill Noel nor did I supply arms to the rebels. I am not a big shark in the Russia/Ukraine political circuit but if I am in great trouble I could still reach out to Russian President Vladimir Putin,” says Weeratunga.

Q. You have been branded as the most controversial Ambassador Sri Lanka has ever had. That aside what’s your current position?

A: 15 years ago I started a tea business and I own a tea brand named Randy Tea. For the past nine years I was working for our overseas mission and did not attend to my business very much. Now times are difficult and I’m redeveloping my tea trade.

Four monks remanded over Homagama court unrest

Four monks remanded over Homagama court unrest
February 20, 2016
logoThe Homagama Magistrate’s Court today remanded four Buddhist monks who had surrendered in connection with the tense situation outside the court premise recently, till March 01.
Ven. Biyagama Suseema Thero, Ven Pitigala Dhamma Vineetha Thero, Ven. Matuwagala Dhammasiri and Kirama Devinda Thero surrendered to Homagama Police last evening and were produce before the magistrate today (20).
The monks were accused of rioting outside the Magistrate Court on January 26 when the chief of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS), Galagodaaththe Gnanasara Thero was remanded for contempt of court and threatening the wife of missing journalist Prageeth Eknaligoda.
The General Secretary of the Ravana Balaya, Venerable Ittekande Saddhatissa Thero and President of the Sinhala Ravaya, Venerable Akmeemana Dayarathana Thero are among a total of 10 Buddhist monks and 5 laymen currently in remand custody over the incident.

Will Col. Shammi decide Gota’s fate?

- Feb 20, 2016
Investigations by the CID into the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligdoa are now over, and there is belief that the main accused in the case could be former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, say CID sources.

By now, all those connected to the disappearance are under arrest, but Sri Lanka Army Col. Shammi Kumararatne has not yet revealed as to who had given the relevant order.

However, Army sources say Col. Kumararatne had acted under direct orders by the ex-defence secretary.

The Army intelligence group under him was a special unit not operating under the orders of the then Army intelligence chief Brig. Anura Wanniarchchi. It is now revealed that this group was responsible for many controversial incidents that had taken place at the time.

Although Col. Kumararatne is not revealing as to who had given him the order, court action is to be filed against all those under arrest on charges of conspiring, abducting, illegally detaining and causing a disappearance. If found guilty, each will be sentenced to a minimum prison term of 20 years.

Military personnel connected to this crime and other crimes are forced to serve term due to the wants of a certain individual or individuals in the political authority at the time.

What their relatives, friends and those loyal to war heroes, who are now trying to get them freed, should do is to make them understand that they should reveal those who had forced them into committing these crimes. Only through such action that a country’s law and order could be strengthened. Protecting the criminals will only result in unending inconvenience for their relatives and friends.

Govt. should create environment for people at Thotalanga to live like human beings

SATURDAY, 20 FEBRUARY 2016
“It is human beings who live here. It is the responsibility of the government to find a process for them to live like human beings,” said the Member of the Political Bureau of the JVP K.D. Lal Kantha to the media when he visited yesterday (19th) the people at Thotalanga whose houses have been displaced due to their houses being dismantled by authorities.
They were strong supporter s of the UNP and they have engaged in Minister Ravi Karunanayaka’s election campaigns said residents whose houses have been demolished. They told Mr. Lal Kantha that Minister Karunanayaka had said they would be allowed to build their houses in the area but now authorities have demolished their houses.

'Bridge on the River Kwai' to be exploded?

2016-02-20
The residents of the Kalubothenna area had organized a protest yesterday to object on the explosions of the bridge where the film “The Bridge on the River Kwai” was shot in 1957 with the large rock near it.

The residents said the bridge and the rock would be exploded because of a private hydro-power plant which comes under the Broadlands hydro-power project. This hydro-power plant is situated beneath the Polpitiya hydro-power plant crossing the Kelani river, aiming to produce 150 mega volts of electricity supply.

“We will face lots of issues if this bridge and the river was exploded. One of the main livelihoods of the Kitulgala area, the white-water rafting, will come to standstill if this were to happen. There are around 40 white-water rafting centres in this area. All those centres will have to meet with a water shortage issue if they explode this bridge and the rock. Due to this the tourist industry will also be at a risk,” said the treasurer of the White-water Rafting Association Upul Nayanajith.

“Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya has promised us to offer the necessary water if they go ahead with this exploding. But we do not think he would keep up to his words. So we would like to request the Minister to offer us a written document, including the ministry’s guarantee to offer the necessary water to carry out the white-water rafting in this area, if they are going ahead with these explosions,” said Mr. Nayanajith.

When the Daily Mirror inquired about this issue from the Power and Renewable Energy Minister Ranjith Siyambalapitiya he said that he would be drawing up an agreement with the white-water rafting associations and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) in the near future. Further he said that they have made arrangements to construct a separate mini hydro-power plant to produce water for the white-water rafting sport.

“The Broadlands hydro-power project comes as the third step of the Laxapana hydro-power plant project. Therefore I would like to say that this is not a sudden step taken by our ministry. This project has been brought out with a proper system to protect the white-water rafting sport and the tourism. The explosion which had been made yesterday was just a test blast. I ensure that there would not be any kind of harm to the livelihoods of the residents of this area nor to the environment,” said MP Siyambalapitiya. (Kalathma Jayawardhane and Ranjith Rajapakse)

Call termination racket of SLT chairman Sirisena: 2 more nabbed in Puttalam and Anuradhapura – a former popular cricketer involved

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News- 20.Feb.2016, 7.40 AM)   It is an incontrovertible well known  fact that with the blessings and patronage of the Rajapakse family , the high ups of the SLT/Mobitel Co. were engaged in rackets secretly from the time of the Rajapakse regime; and  after Kumarasinghe Sirisena became the chairman of both  Companies , Lanka e news had to carry out the thankless task of exposing the massive ‘call   termination’ racket involving the robbery of IDD calls . Now following this exposure , two more racketeers have been nabbed.Though it is not possible right now to reveal the names of these culprits , these racketeers have chosen two sites at Puttalam and Anuradhapura for their illicit operations. A number of politicos of the Rajapakse regime , and a former popular cricketer are also involved in these operations  , it is learnt.
It is only after Lanka e news always first with the news and best with the views exposed the disappearance of the  state of the art equipments that were got down by the SLT during the CHOGM conference , and revealed those  were used for ‘call termination,’ an investigation to search for the lost equipments has also been launched.
Based on reports reaching Lanka e news, after our exposures regarding the call termination rackets , the IDD call time  of the two Companies that dropped by 50 % by that time , had picked up and the IDD call time had risen by 15 % again. This is clear evidence of how  call termination rogues were  manipulating  , and what caused  the decline.
After Kumarasinghe Sirisena became the chairman . without  apprehending the culprits , and sacking these veterans  associated with these rackets from the time of the Rajapakse regime , he kept them back instead. In addition he dismantled the Fraud management division that was there to nab the culprits. Sripathy Jayawardena who was trained in America , and was in charge of this division was also transferred out .
Meanwhile , the ‘IDD time’ sales of the SLT/ Mobitel dropped  drastically by 50 %, and the call termination racketeers thereby  triumphed.
After we exposed this colossal racket , an investigation was launched at the behest of minister Harin Fernando , leading to the nabbing of Ajith Silva , the general manager of SLT who robbed 100,000 minutes of IDD call time per day.  Now , the investigation has been entrusted to the CID, and with the intervention of Harin ,  the assistance of an American intelligence Co. with the state of the art technology and ability to detect this call termination racket has been sought .

It is significant to note only Mangala Samaraweera and Harin Fernando  were the only  two ministers (both UNP) who after becoming ministers of the Telecom did not entrust the E 1 line and the SIP trunk line that can be used for call termination  to their stooges and henchmen .
While the Institution is presently plunged in deep despair, Kumarasinghe Sirisena despite being its chairman is still acting most nonchalantly and without any concern for the Institution . He has made arrangements to leave for Barcelona on Friday  with twelve others . The expenditure for this foreign tour is met by the  Institution .In contradistinction his predecessor did not use the Company’s funds for his foreign tours.
The photograph depicts the protest staged by the employees in front of Kumarasinghe Sirisena’s office yesterday (17) against his maladministration and destructive activities.
