Time to undo edifices of Rajapaksa cult

2015-12-14
o matter his excesses, ex-President Mahinda Rajapaksa will be remembered as the political leader who defeated terrorism that blighted this country for three decades. His predecessors failed in doing that for many reasons: All of them were constrained by geo-political reasons, but, the earlier leaders -- especially J.R. Jayewardene, whose efforts to fight back terrorism were stifled by an insular India in the 80s -- were hamstrung by geo-political constraints more than their successors. R. Premadasa was hindered by short-sighted domestic opposition that forced him to expel the Indian Peace Keeping Force when it was waging a decisive war against the Tamil Tigers.

COP 21: Lame New Labels; Same Old Questions – Sri Lankan Solutions

This Paris conference is the last change for the UNFCCC to limit the rise of global temperature to 20C. If the global leadership collective do not have the commitment and the will to break through the various deadlocks and resistive forces arrayed against this, the world must resign itself to the rapid degeneration of our planet and its creatures via convenient ignorance, past concern, past alarm, past inaction… to doom. We all know that if we continue the way we have conveniently done then the planet’s temperature will rise to 30C over the temperature that existed 150 years ago. We are clearly cognizant of the results of such an escalation in the temperature of our planet. Loss of agricultural land and damage to the photosynthetic action that feeds us all will bring about a situation that is impossible to respond to with massive loss of life among the poor due to thirst and starvation.
The world first talked about mitigating carbon emissions. While it was discussing this, the temperature of the plant rose by 10C. Then it changed tack and started talking about adaptation. Despite hundreds of discussions, it was unable to adapt to any degree that was worth talking about. It had to resign ourselves to simply responding to the mandatory disasters that visited many parts of our planet. So, now, it is reduced to speaking about how to save the lives of vulnerable peoples and communities. Yet, realizing that even this was impossible, it is now simply talking on an emerging label, namely, “minimizing loss and damage”. When the environment is damaged to the point where it cannot support human life anymore, they must migrate, whether they like it or not. Thus, it is now talking about a new set of rules based on yet another label. This time, “Migration”.
If the temperature of the world increases anymore not only mankind but most other creatures who call this planet home will wiped off its face. The world will no longer be a place for life to happen, be, and prosper whether that life is human or plant or animal. We, the world, must take responsibility for this doom which is no longer in the realm of conjecture but stark, real, and proximate.
Those who are primarily responsible for this turn of events are those nations the developed nations that burned massive amounts of fossil fuels in their rush to develop themselves. If one considers it a basic right of all human life to be able to release carbon into the atmosphere, then America will only be able to emit 30 Giga Tons of carbon up to the year 2050. Yet, by now, that nation has already released 95 Giga Tons of carbon into the atmosphere or three times the amount they should be allowed to emit. Europe can only release 50 Giga Tons in the same period but they have already emitted 85 Giga Tons. Therefore, it is imperative that the issue of “Historic Responsibility” is brought to the table. Accordingly, America and Europe must stop emitting carbon into the atmosphere completely right now.Read More

‘Kondaya & I are both the same’, says Yoshitha!

Lankanewsweb.netDec 14, 2015
“Kondaya, who cannot read or write, and I, who studied in England, are both the same. These days, both of us are having the same stars,” said second son of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa at a recent rubgy function. Yoshitha said so to claim that he too, was a victim of irresponsible media usage in reporting the murder of Wasim Thajudeen, just like Dunesh Priyashantha alias Kondaya, who was sent to the gallows by the media and was subsequently saved by a DNA testing over the killing of Seya Sadevmi of Kotadeniyawa.

Yoshitha has made the comment in response to continuing allegations being leveled by websites, including us, relating to Thajudeen’s murder.

After Kondaya was freed, the CID arrested his elder brother, and in the same manner, CID officers are coming after his elder brother Namal over the Thajudeen murder, Yoshitha said. He also said that he could not say anything about the connection of elder brother of Kondaya to Seya’s killing, but that neither his elder brother nor himself are connected whatsoever to the Thajudeen murder. There is more than enough evidence to prove his innocence at an independent court hearing, he added.

Editor’s note:

The law says a suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty . As journalists, our duty is to report facts and not to make suspects guilty.

However, even before the CID - websites, including us - have clearly said that Thajudeen did not die in a vehicle accident, but that it was a well-planned killing. We made that clear based on information given us by the crime division of Kirulapone police with regard to DIG Anura Senanayake’s extraordinary conduct with regard to this incident.

The notes made by the then crimes OIC at the scene of the incident are now missing. Early morning on the day of the incident, DIG Anura Senanayake visited the scene (DIGs do not visit road accident scenes) and the first thing he did was to take those notes into his custody and then he transferred the investigation to the Narahenpita police. If the retired DIG Senanayake makes a confession, everyone will understand the so-called innocence of the Rajapaksa sons.

Sri Lanka's Tamil Political Prisoners: An Abdication of Presidential Leadership

Taylor Dibbert Headshot
 -12/13/2015
The Huffington PostJust days ago, a Tamil political prisoner being held in Jaffna Prison commenced a hunger strike. Similar hunger strikes have taken place this year, although this behavior doesn't appear to have changed the government's calculus in a significant way.
This issue has been a source of ongoing debate and tension. The Sri Lankan government has shown, with great reluctance, that it's willing to grant bail to some prisoners. On November 11 The Wall Street Journal, reported that "the country's attorney general gave approvals to allow bail for 63 prisoners."
However, it's important to keep in mind that these prisoners have been asking to be released and given some semblance of genuine freedom. They've not been requesting that they be released on bail, which ensures that they'll have to appear in court at a later time. (Who knows what might happen then?)
Relatedly, the government could also produce a list of all those who are currently being held. The number of Tamil political prisoners is, at the very least, thought to exceed 200 people, though that number may be much higher. The Wall Street Journal piece from November notes that human rights activists "have in the past given a figure of more than 650 Tamil" political prisoners. An experienced Colombo-based human rights lawyer has told me that the majority of Tamil political prisoners could be released without delay. And that, for a much smaller number of people, where the government might have a significant amount of evidence, a trial may be appropriate.
Current President Maithripala Sirisena was not elected on a reconciliation platform. Yet his government has now made a range of pledges surrounding transitional justice, and it would be helpful if he could take some small steps in that direction. Frankly, it's still not clear how serious the coalition government is about fulfilling the panoply of commitments that have been made.
If Colombo's sincere about implementing more significant reforms, it needs to stop prevaricating and either release, or bring to trial, all Tamil political prisoners. Sirisena had given assurances that he would resolve this problem by early November, though that promise has clearly been broken. What we're currently witnessing is an abdication of presidential leadership. From a gloomier perspective, even if the Sinhala-dominated government is relatively uninterested in reaching out to Tamils, it could still do the bare minimum (as a matter of strategy) and release or bring to trial all Tamil political prisoners. Doing so would at least keep people somewhat hopeful, both in Sri Lanka and abroad, that further war-related reforms might be forthcoming. Colombo's continued intransigence on some of the small issues makes it's hard to be optimistic about the broader reform agenda.

US blocks visa for Field Marshal Fonseka

2015-12-14
The US Embassy has yet not given approval to the visa application submitted by Democratic Party Leader Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka two weeks ago, sources close to Field Marshal Fonseka said today

Sources said the US State Department has blocked Field Marshal Fonseka's visa application for the past two weeks in connection with war crimes charges against Sri Lanka during the time he was the army commander.

“Most probably this must be why the US embassy has refused him a visa to visit the US. There are no other issues,” they said.  “He has not visited the US during the past five years and his green card has also expired.”

Sources also said Field Marshal Fonseka had applied for a visa to visit his daughters living in the US and to meet the Sri Lankan community living there.

It was also reported that Sri Lankan Ambassador Prasad Kariyawasam had also contacted the State Department to obtain the visa for the Field Marshal. (Darshana Sanjeewa)

SL Air Force is going to lose the commander post in the Kothalawa Defense Academy

SL Air Force is going to lose the commander post in the Kothalawa Defense Academy

Lankanewsweb.netDec 14, 2015
It is the normal practice to appoint a senior, suitable and qualified officer for the vice chancellor post in the Kothalawa Defense Academy from the air force, navy and the army. This post use to be given for the above forces for a tenure following to another force in rotation. Currently the post is held by the army and conventionally the next position should be given to the air force.

The current commander or the vice chancellor in the Kothalawala Defense Academy is due to become the chief of staff in the army soon. Confirmed sources reports that stealthy arrangements have been made to fill the vacant position by another army officer without appointing an air force officer. The ironic point to note is that the selected army officer is due to go on retirement completing his 55 years. This is the first time a person who is not in the active service is going to be appointed.
The logic to bring this proposal has been cited stating at a time when there isn’t a suitable person to appoint to the chief of staff position which is vacant in the air force how to find a person to appoint to the Kothalawala Defense academy. However there is an opinion in the air force that the current President, Prime Minister and the current deputy defense minister will not give permission for such an unfair appointment.
We hope the President, Prime Minister or the deputy defense minister would focus their attention to the following senior officers to appoint for the required post.
1.AVM. Ajantha Silva - who joined the Kothalawala Defense Academy on 1981/3/2 under course number one is currently serving as the director air force engineer. The latter have completed BSc and NDU courses is going to get retire in 2017/3/2 and has held many important postions in the air force. The latter has held many senior positions and going to retire on 2016/10/10. He has completed BSc. degree and NDU courses. Rohana Pathirage is a graduate of the Moratuwa University and an old boy of Royal College.
3.AVM. Kapila Jayampathi - who joined the Kothalawala Defense Academy on 1982/3/5 under the course number ten, is currently serving as the director air force operations. The latter is going to get retire on 28/5.2018 has held many important positions in the air force. Jayampathi has completed MSc. and NDU courses, is an old boy of Nalanda College.

A huge petroleum robbery

MONDAY, 14 DECEMBER 2015
It is revealed that the government has grabbed a huge Rs.22,049 million as fuel tax without giving the advantage of the fuel prices coming down in the world market drastically to the people.
The Leader of the JVP Anura Dissanayaka participating in the budget debate said the price of a barrel of crude oil has come down from US$102 to US$46 but the government has not given the advantage of this reduction to the people. Instead the government has burdened the people with huge taxes.
The plunder by the government is revealed in the latest Fiscal Management Report. It shows that the tax income from fuel during the January – September period last year was Rs.4,675 but the income for the same period this year has risen to Rs. 22,049.
This is an increase of 471,63%. Had the benefit of the decrease in fuel prices in the world market given to the people they would have received further benefits such as reduction of prices  in industrial products, transport etc.

Palestinian Intifada; Grounds, Hurdles

There is no collective and specific pathway among the different Palestinian groups.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Following the fresh uprising of Palestinians in West Bank and eastern al-Quds (Jerusalem), the Israeli regime is once again faced with political and security challenges in the occupied territories and at the same time, facing political pressures from the international community.
Just like the two previous Intifadas (uprisings), the current wide-ranging Palestinian Intifada has its own internal and external grounds, which include:
  1. Inclusive Popular support: the emergence and development of any phenomenon like a general uprising is highly dependent on the popular advocacy in different dimensions, and this is a principle adoptable on any political ideal. Now with the Palestinians’ thorough support, the Intifada has found appropriate backgrounds to grow.
  2. Active participation: in political terms, the emergence of such a significant development as a general Intifada needs formation of a process to upgrade the popular support to active participation of people and the Palestinian groups. The people’s partaking in the issues pertaining to them makes the basis for rise of a general popular participation, which comes in a spontaneous or a mobilized form. The general uprising needs two forms of participation. The spontaneous involvement is related to the general culture but the mobilized form of engagement in the uprising needs intensive media activities of the different Palestinian groups as well as the Islamic countries. In Palestine, presently, a public involvement in the uprising is observable, which gathers together people from all walks of life including women and children, young and old people, the clerics, traders and the clerks, who are being activated in the form of anti-Israeli resistance.
  3. Increase of extremism among the Israelis: in recent years, the extremist Zionist ideologies have seen a growing trend among the Israeli settlers, especially as a result of persistent insecurity, economic crisis and the propagandistic activities of extremist groups in the occupied territories. In recent years, the Israelis have tended to favor the right-wing and extremist parties like Likud party, an issue paving the way for more confrontations between the Muslim and Jewish communities in the occupied Palestinian territories.
  4. Growth of unprecedented violence by Israelis: one of the other factors giving rise to the Palestinian Intifada is the unprecedented rate of violent actions against the Palestinians. Although the Israelis always use violence in dealing with the Palestinians, the violence sometimes shows a remarkable increase, in a way that the media regularly depict the Israeli brutalities which include firing live bullets at the unarmed protesters, cruel storming of the Palestinians’ homes and setting fire to them.
Despite all of the grounds motivating the formation and duration of the uprising, there are serious obstructions which could any time block its growing stream or slow it down:
  1. Palestinians’ internal discords: one of the cases which has always represented a hurdle in front of the Palestinian intifada is internal differences among the Palestinian leaders and groups, especially that there is a group among the Palestinians which, because of enjoying extensive ties with the West and the Israeli regime, at the start of the road of the popular uprising tries to blend in with it to secure its own interests and privileges. However, after gaining its interests, the group stirs conflicts between the other Palestinian groups. Consequently, people are discouraged to move on in their course after seeing the disputes between the political movements and leaders.
  2. Absence of cohesive and certain strategy: any political development like the Intifada needs a definite and united strategy in order for it to roll on and reach a conclusion. Although Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements have always set their strategy on escalating the resistance wave and increasing participation in the uprising, and the resistance media also try so much to keep the uprising standing, there is no collective and specific pathway among the different Palestinian groups. The resistant fractions need to cooperate and coordinate more to set up the uniting strategy.
  3. The Israeli seditions: The divisive activities of the Israelis done by the Tel Aviv’s security and spying agencies are another hurdle endangering the Palestinian people’s nation-wide Intifada. The Israeli intelligence and spying agencies, Mossad and Shabak, also known as Shin Bet, have a long record of spying and anti-spying activities, as they have specialized security staff. Using their wide-ranging media and spying networks, the Israeli intelligence organizations have spread their activities deep among some Palestinian leaders and groups. In case of negligence, they could set an obstacle ahead of Intifada. Therefore, the Palestinians need to watch the developments with great care.
  4. Lack of Muslim world’s comprehensive support: generally, such big developments as Intifada must be backed up by foreign governments. The aids could consist of diplomatic backing in regional and international organizations, providing the involved groups with financial and arms support, and supplying them with basic and strategic equipment. Although already backed up by independent countries like the Islamic Republic of Iran and Syria, the Palestinian Intifada needs a greater support of Muslim states especially Arab countries like Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Jordan. But, in recent years these three countries have shown a passiveness concerning the Palestinian cause.
  5. Not focusing on the Palestinian cause: after growth of the armed takfiri groups inside the West Asian countries in recent years, a great deal of the Palestinian potentials such as manpower and operational force, rather than serving the Palestine’s case, have been employed to hit the Islamic and Arab countries.
It is observed that the militant groups and some of the regional countries recruited the Palestinians, involving them in Syria and Iraq wars, while the Palestinians need to avoid infighting and concentrate on Palestine to liberate the Islamic land as soon as possible.
Yemen inches towards peace - but what

about the Islamic State group?

Middle East EyeTAIZ, Yemen - It was a breakthrough that both sides in the Yemen war had been waiting for - an offer of peace talks based on a general ceasefire, a condition the Houthis had demanded and something which, until last week, President Abd Rabbuh Mansour Hadi had dismissed.
But with that ceasefire now agreed, and due to begin on Monday, those striving for peace hailed upcoming talks in Switzerland as the best hope to end the bloodshed.
Only, no one has told the Islamic State group, whose presence in the south of the country has been felt with a wave of assassinations and attacks in Aden.
In early October the group attacked the Yemeni government at al-Qasr hotel, reportedly killing dozens of officials and troops, and on 6 December murdered Jaafar Saad, who had been city's governor for only two months, in a car bomb attack.
Many in the southern city now ask: how can Yemen have peace if the spectre of IS hangs over the country?
The attacks have sent shockwaves through the Saudi-backed Hadi government, with Hadi appointing members of the Southern Resistance to lead Aden's defence. Hadi forces have also moved from fighting in Sanaa and Taiz towards Aden in response to the growing IS campaign.
Galal al-Sobaihi, a commander in the Southern Resistance in Aden's al-Mansoura district, told Middle East Eye that Aden was his main priority, but claimed that the Houthis were in fact the force behind the IS campaigns.
"The war in Aden has not finished, as the ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh and the Houthis rebels still create chaos under the name of IS fighters," he said.
The city's former head of security, Mohammed Mosaed, supported Sobaihi's view: "There are no IS in Aden and the militias who create chaos are supporters of Saleh and the Houthis."
Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula are also suspected of aligning with IS in Aden to strike at the Hadi government. It is this seemingly intractable situation on the ground that has spread fears that whatever is agreed in Switzerland this week will have little effect in the city.
Mohammed Al-Hassani, a political analyst and the former managing editor of al-Tagheer news website, told MEE that IS must be dealt with if there is to be a lasting peace.
"We did not hear about the AQAP or IS fighters in Aden before the war began, and they took advantage to enter the city," he said.
He said that Hadi's supporters had recently stopped their advances in Taiz, possibly to facilitate the ceasefire - but that they had a more pressing mission to confront IS in Aden. IS, he added, was the common enemy for Houthis and pro-government forces.
"AQAP and IS are fighting shoulder to shoulder with the Resistance in different provinces against the Houthis," he said. "But that does not mean that the AQAP and IS love the government - rather they hate the Houthis more and they will fight the government after defeating the Houthis."
To add to the complex situation facing Yemen, the Southern Resistance, while fighting in support of Hadi in Taiz and Aden, have the ultimate aim of splitting southern Yemen from the rest of the country.
For the residents of Aden, however, one warring faction is as bad as another.
Abdul Mazen, a resident in Aden's Crater district, told MEE that he used to see the AQAP fighters in his visits to al-Tawahi area, confirmed by al-Qaeda slogans on their rifles and vehicles.
However, recent deployments by Hadi-aligned forces had driven them out, or at the very least underground. "For the last three days I have not seen the AQAP fighters, as the Southern Resistance spread everywhere in the city," he said.
"We need Aden to return to peace, we do not want to see the armed men spread in the city whether they are from the Southern Resistance or from IS and AQAP."

Only You Can Prevent Islamophobia
BY RULA JEBREAL-DECEMBER 8, 2015
Last week, 23-year-old Ruhi Rehman of Newcastle, Britain, became a viral video star. In a recent video interview with the Daily Mail, she related the story of being abused on a local commuter train. As the story goes, Rehman and her younger sister had been sitting quietly on the train when, suddenly, they found themselves singled out and threatened by a young man, apparently because he objected to their wearing the hijab. He then demanded that the sisters leave their seats. “This is my country; I’m an Englishman,” he said. “My sister and I replied back, saying, ‘No, we were born here as well. We’re British as well.'” But he continued to berate them.

South African markets rally after Jacob Zuma picks 'safe' finance minister

Former office holder Pravin Gordhan reappointed after tumultuous week in which rand plummeted to historic low

 in Johannesburg-Monday 14 December 2015
South African markets have rallied after President Jacob Zuma re-appointed Pravin Gordhan as finance minister, although the move did little to quell criticism of the country’s leader.
Gordhan became the country’s third finance minister in less than a week. He previously occupied the post from 2009-14, and is considered a safe pair of hands to guide Africa’s second-largest economy.
Last week the rand plummeted to a historic low against the dollar after Zuma sacked his finance minister, Nhlanhla Nene, after little more than a year in the job, replacing him with a relatively unknown backbencher, David van Rooyen. The move was widely seen as an attempt to remove any curbs on the president’s spending power.
In his first public appearance since accepting the position, Gordhan acknowledged the unusual circumstances surrounding his reappointment. “Our currency fell, the stock market dropped by 2.94% and bond yields shot up by [more than 1.5 percentage points]. Our government is acutely aware of the financial impact this had on those who are invested in this economy. As President Zuma indicated, when a decision triggers developments such as these, a democratic government has a duty to listen and respond appropriately. I am therefore privileged to address you today,” he said.
Gordhan promised to uphold South Africa’s spending ceiling, reform failing state-owned enterprises and protect the country’s credit rating. “It is time that individuals or groups of individuals stopped playing with public entities,” he told a packed press conference in Pretoria.
Announcing Gordhan’s appointment, Zuma said he had “received many representations to reconsider my decision [to appoint van Rooyen]”. Van Rooyen will take over from Gordhan as minister for cooperative governance and traditional affairs.
According to Ranjeni Munusamy, of the Daily Maverick news website, the leaders of the ruling party’s alliance partners, the South African Communist party and the Congress of South African Trade Unions, had warned they could no longer protect the president from an internal rebellion.
On Monday morning, the Johannesburg stock exchange soared 370 points on opening, while the rand strengthened to 15.26 against the US dollar, having hit more than 16. “It’s fascinating that when a Monday morning comes along all those numbers have changed in a very positive sense,” said Gordhan.
According to a report in Business Day, the decision to sack Nene came shortly after a cabinet meeting secretly approved a controversial proposal to build a nuclear power plant. Nene had previously said he would sign off on a nuclear deal only if he felt South Africa could afford it. A cabinet spokesperson denied the report.
Although it might have halted economic collapse, Zuma’s dramatic U-turn has not stemmed criticism of his leadership. #ZumaMustStillFall was trending on Twitter in South Africa on Monday, while a number of prominent voices, including some within the president’s African National Congress, have condemned his decision-making.
Ray Hartley, a political analyst, said Zuma’s about-turn exposed the weaknesses of his leadership. “Zuma has lost his political aura and now the vultures will circle ever more [closely] and the possibility of an early recall looms large,” he said.
