Looking Back From The 21st Century In Sri Lanka

Colombo TelegraphBy Emil van der Poorten –December 13, 2015

Within a month I had occasion to visit the chapel of my alma mater, Trinity College, Kandy (TCK) on two occasions. The first was to be part of the final rites for a good man and a dear friend. The second was to attend the “Carol Service” held on the first Sunday of December at this most unique of Christian places of worship.
While the event held on the first Sunday of December is truly a visual and aural treat for even a catechumen like me, the history of the Holy Trinity Church, to give it its full name, evoked a variety of thoughts not necessarily associated with the practice of Christianity and its rituals.
It is only recently that one of Sri Lanka’s premier architects drew attention to the fact that the TCK chapel is one of Sri Lanka’s architectural gems, combining traditional forms with more open concepts something that preceded the iconic work of Sri Lanka’s premier architect of all time, Geoffrey Bawa, by almost half a century.
The very history of the building also is of enormous significance (or should be!) to anyone interested in the more worldly history of our country.
Trinity, as most would know, emerged out of the Anglican educational tradition during the time of the British raj. The Rev. A. G. Fraser, a man way ahead of his time in the matter of liberal education in a British colony, enabled those who wished to be instructed in their mother tongues – Sinhala & Tamil – to have that facility afforded them at least in the primary classes. This was without precedent at that point of British colonial history, the first quarter of the 20th Century.
To digress, for a moment, I had occasion to work with a very senior government servant in Alberta, Canada in the late 1980s who was of Ghanaian origin. In the course of a conversation, I mentioned the fact that Fraser had spent time on a sort of sabbatical from his primary job as Principal of Trinity, around 1912, helping establish Achimota College in what was then the Gold Coast. My Ghanaian friend was impressed no end by my very association with an institution that Fraser had ties to and which, to hear him tell it, was far and away Ghana’s finest and most highly regarded educational institution. Talk about elevation by association!

Government capitulates on Port City; rain gods make Colombo mega-flood-polis!

article_image

by Rajan Philips-
It looks more like capitulation than compromise. Rather than downsizing Port City as a compromise, let alone scrapping it as it vowed it would in the now-forgotten 100-Day Program, the government has all but approved the restarting of the suspended project at its bloated 450+/- hectares off-shore footprint. News of the approval appeared almost simultaneously in Beijing and in Colombo. The Chinese authorities are pleased, and the Sri Lankan government has spelt out the ‘next steps’ in the approval process. Before long contractors will resume dredging, blasting and digging operations in the Gampaha District that would ultimately remove nearly 70 million cubic meters of sand and rock (equivalent to: one mile by one mile by 85 feet deep hole) and dump it off-shore across from the Galle Face Green. What Prime Minister Wickremesinghe deadpanned as "few landfills" is a massive dig and fill operation undertaken in one fell swoop, but for the interruption following the January 8 election.

Sirisena ‘Vasalahothis’ in Act two : Rajapakse money launderers replace good governance activists !

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News -13.Dec.2015, 11.45PM) Lanka e news is constrained to publish a very unsavory report that though it is the pro  good governance masses that made sacrifices including life risking dangers to elect Miathripala Sirisena  as the president, it is becoming increasingly evident  the president after being installed in that post is preferring the condom treatment towards the good governance masses  while kissing and hugging the Rajapakse criminals engaged in money laundering activities.
This was well and truly borne testimony to , when Thusitha Haloluwa , a Director in the board of Mobitel Co. of which Maithripala ‘s younger brother is the chairman was dismissed from the post , and Heshan De Silva , a money launderer for Rajapakses was appointed in his place .
The commitment shown by Thusitha to re build the SLFP party , and thereby propelling Maithripala to the post of president is well and widely known. Therefore,  some facts about  Heshan De Silva merit highlighting
Heshan De Silva mentioned hereinbefore is only 25 years old , but  parades as though he is a billionaire. He claims that he has invested US dollars 2  billion in Kenya mainly, and other Easten African countries using  some of his wealth .Once he said , he has  invested in 17000 businesses in Kenya. Another time he said he has  invested money  in 25000 businesses, and that most of those businesses , about 70 % are successful. However , those in the business world are of the view that investors in eastern African countries do not enjoy such success.
It is worthy of note that even countries like China have invested only US $ 474 million in Kenyain 2013 , whereas our potty braggart  brags that he has invested US $ 2000 million , that is 2 billion dollars   in Kenya ! Another empty boast  of his supported by his own stinking flatulence like that experienced when one is on an empty stomach is , an American national has invested monies with him , whose name he says  he cannot disclose.
While Heshan De Silva is full of flatulence sans substance , his own past record  places him in the worst possible light. While he was in  a College in America he disrupted his studies midway because of his addiction to drugs. He was saved when he tried to commit suicide . After he was saved , he was placed in a drug addicts home for long term treatment .Today he is supposed to have become  a billionaire on the US $ 200.00 given him by his father for his food , which he has saved.
Heshan ‘braggart’ claims his  first business was providing insurance cover to bus tickets .This bloke who could not pass his own examination says , he earned by writing theses to other students. That task , if he has truly accomplished is itself unlawful and a punishable offence.
Thereafter he has suddenly become a dollar  billionaire , and visited Kenya to invest, he claims, but those who know Heshan well know he  has only one talent , that is profusely lying in English. Anyone who wants to have only a hearty laugh will enjoy watching  his interview on the ‘You Tube.’ It is so hilarious because of its stupidity. All  who know him know only one thing about him – he is the money launderer out and out for the Rajapakses.
There is a  hidden side to  this drama of appointing this scoundrel to the Mobitel as a Director .It were Thusitha Haloluwa and a majority of Directors who played a major role to oust Wegapitiya, the Laugfs owner , a most corrupt Director of Mobitel from the Director board  during the period of the Rajapakse era and thereafter . He is now under investigation by the FCID. Unbelievably this corrupt crook was re appointed as SLT Director recently.
Thusitha Haloluwa who opposed the corrupt activities , was dismissed from the Mobitel board of Directors , and was replaced by Heshan De Silva who was a manager under Wegapitiya. Why did a so called dollar billionaire in Kenya cum rupee billionaire in Sri Lanka become a manager merits a separate probe.
No matter what , when Wegapitiya was removed from the Director post , Sirisenas immediately appointed the manager in that  place thereby proving beyond doubt why most corrupt Wegapitiya is most important to Sirisenas. Reasons are obvious. Surely it cannot be for any other reason than to carry out the corrupt activities in league with the corrupt.
It is an incontrovertible fact that the country was headed for an inexorable  holocaust under the Rajapakses , and the people who discerned this most clearly made sure that they are thrown out lock , stock and barrel . It is on this account the people toiled hard to fetch  Maithripala Sirisena all the way from Polonnaruwa to be installed on the presidential throne , and not for the president   or his siblings to repeat what Maithripala ‘s  predecessor did.
It is paramount that the people realize how dangerous and deadly is the present  path taken by Maithripala and his younger brother who were fetched all the way from Polonnaruwa.  Individuals like Harin who should understand better the portentous trend more than others must act now or never , If he cannot think intelligently and act as a man with a backbone without kowtowing , he is only clearly demonstrating he is not worth his salt

The military is a microcosm of the society it comes from. Lankan society has been experiencing a ceaseless wave of violent crime at least from 2006. The fact that murder and rape proliferate does not mean every Lankan is a murderer or a rapist.
There have been several incidents of uniformed men committing crimes against ordinary citizens, including child rape, even outside of the North and the East. This doesn’t mean that all military men are criminals; it merely means that some are. And they should be brought to justice, irrespective of their war record or the ethnicity of their victim.

CID denies having nature of CCTV footage claimed by Rajitha!

CID denies having nature of CCTV footage claimed by Rajitha!

Lankanewsweb.netDec 13, 2015
The CID says it does not possess the nature of CCTV camera footage as claimed by cabinet spokesman, minister Rajitha Senaratne, with regard to the death of rugger player Mohamad Wasim Thajudeen.

The minister has been telling the media that the CID has received CCTV footage which will turn the political world upside down, including how Thajudeen had been beaten up and murdered.

When contacted, a CID spokesman said they could very easily have proved Thajudeen had been murdered, had they been in the possession of such footage.

Also, the operation to identify and arrest the killers would not have been so difficult, he said.

The CID has told the minister to provide it without delay the CCTV footage as claimed by him.

When the CID asked him about the CCTV footage, the minister has said that a certain person has given him information with regard to the CCTV footage.

The CID has asked the minister to help it to get in touch with that person to obtain his assistance in the investigation.

However, that is yet to be done.

The CCTV footage available to the CID regarding Thajudeen’s death, from two cameras erected in two buildings in the vicinity of where the rugger player had been murdered, has been sent to the IT unit of the Colombo University for specialist examination.

That footage has not contained the nature of footage as claimed by Senaratne.

A leading weekend newspaper reported that CCTV footage of Thajudeen’s murder, which will turn the political world upside down, will soon be made public.

The CID is looking into whether both the minister and the newspaper are trying to take the murder investigation away from the proper course.

Political analysts are of the view that it could be a conspiracy to cover up the murder that Senaratne and the newspaper are making misleading statements.

( Both are responsible ?)
Sri Lanka Brief13/12/2015
A driver of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa is to be arrested in connection with the murder of former Sri Lanka Rugby captain Wasim Thajudeen.
The CCTV footage on the abduction of Wasim Thajudeen that shows the events taken place just before his murder was handed over to Colombo University to be analysed. The CID had last week informed Court that Colombo University was studying the footage and that several vehicles could be identified from the CCTV images.
The Court had ordered the CID to obtain foreign assistance if required to analyse the video and report back to Court soon.
The Court had also ordered the CID to obtain statements from former DIG Anura Senanayake and former Judicial Medical Officer (JMO) Ananda Samarasekera on giving false information in relation to the incident.
According to CID sources, a military officer who was the driver of the former President is to be arrested this week in connection with the investigations into the murder while several others are also to be arrested for questioning.
The sources said the driver of the former President has been removed from the Presidential detail and transferred to a military camp in Trincomalee.
A tense situation arose in Parliament last Friday when Thajudeen’s murder was discussed with the opposition, disrupting proceedings.
Thajudeen was found dead in his car on May 17, 2012 in Kirulapone. According to police reports at the time, the rugby player was driving home after attending a party when he lost control of the car and crashed into a wall by Park Road. The car had exploded instantly and burnt the victim.
However, suspicions arose later, and it was reported that Thajudeen was murdered.

Rights activists oppose compulsory testing for AIDS

Consultant veneorologist claims Sri Lanka has low prevalence of HIV cases
The Sunday Times Sri Lanka
With much attention being focused on an “increase” in the number of men, women and deficiency Virus (HIV), human rights activists are up in arms against suggestions that compulsory testing should be carried out on students in all universities and those in Advanced Level classes.
While activists are adamant that not only such compulsory testing but also picking out categories such as university students and schoolchildren is unacceptable, claiming that usually such hype comes around December 1 which is World AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) Day.

Government bereft of concrete development ideas

by Kumar David-December 12, 2015

It is disappointing that development options for Lanka are Pontius Pilate mantras; there are no concrete decisions, especially on the industrial side either from the government or the private sector. What are Pontius Pilate mantras? Washing one’s hands off and expecting others to deliver the goods. This government has three mantras it swears by; export orientation, the private sector as the engine of growth and foreign direct investment (FDI). In proportion these are needed but when the government is oblivious to what industries and services to emphasise it is like a blind man in a dark room. Today I will highlight some sectors for somnambulant leaders to think about when they awaken and decide to set up the much needed planning entities - an overarching planning body and sector committees as in places as diverse as Singapore, India and Germany. The business led advisory committees the PM referred to in his address to the Stock Exchange are not by any stretch planning bodies of this type.

4, including ex-Army commander Jagath Jayasuriya, to CID

4, including ex-Army commander Jagath Jayasuriya, to CID

Lankanewsweb.netDec 13, 2015
The CID is to summon, former chief of joint operations, ex-Army commander Gen. Jagath Jayasuriya and three intelligence officers, to record statements in connection with the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda.

Former intelligence director Amal Karunasekara and incumbent head of intelligence Suresh Sally are also among them.

After statements are recorded from them, former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and a top minister in both the Rajapaksa and the present administrations, will be interrogated further, said the sources.

Meanwhile, police say military intelligence has spread a falsehood, in order to mislead the CID investigation, that Ekneligoda was linked to the LTTE, and that there was a connection with a book called ‘Pavul Gaha’ (family tree).

There has been considerable progress in the investigation into the killing of journalist Lasantha Wickramatunga, but that interest has receded due to various intimidations, say police sources.

Defense secretary gets cold feet after Lanka e news exposure: Sends document he viciously hid to AG !

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News- 13.Dec.2015, 10.45 AM)  Following the exposure by Lanka e news by a report yesterday under the caption ‘Avant Garde acquisition sparks legal complications ! Defense secretary’s omission can result in US $3 billion loss to government !’ the defense secretary who was hitherto concealing a most vital agreement most traitorously had finally sent it the Attorney General (AG).
Lanka e news via its report stated that  the defense secretary had sought AG’s advice without revealing to him the agreement signed between Avant Garde Co. and Rakna Lanka security Co. 20 days prior to the illegal acquisition of Avant Garde Co.,which agreement was signed with full knowledge of the defense secretary.
Moreover , despite the AG calling for this agreement on many occasions  from the defense secretary which was held back by him    ,  the latter had tried his best to keep the AG in the dark in that regard. It was also highlighted by Lanka e news that in the event of the AG taking a wrong decision sans that agreement , the government of Sri Lanka (SL) could lose US dollars 3 billion  ! - which amount the government could become liable to pay to Avant Garde Co.
At long last ! after Lanka e news  exposed this outrageous and illegal action of the defense secretary , the latter had got cold feet and immediately sent the agreement which he hid for so long from the AG and the people.
What is most important is the deceiitful design   in that agreement  : while Kili-Rajitha- Champika –Arjuna group was mounting charges against Avant Garde Co. has signed a pact with the same Co. with the defense minister and defense secretary accepting full responsibilty.
20 days prior , while stating it is in the interests of national security even without the knowledge of the cabinet , the Company was given over to the Navy. Between the agreement and the charges mounted by this Kili-Rajitha-Champika – Arjuna’s  racket team there are grave contradictions. In the interests of the public ,once again we append this agreement .

One eyewitness said he counted 21 bodies with bullet wounds in their heads in the Nyakabiga neighbourhood on Saturday morning.
Some of the victims appeared to have had their hands tied behind their backs.
Residents have claimed that security forces loyal to President Pierre Nkurunziza have been searching houses, dragging people away and shooting them, some with their hands tied.
The sound of gunfire could be heard throughout Friday and overnight in the city. Residents hid in fear, with only soldiers and police patrolling the streets.
Security forces in Burundi (Reuters)
Burundi has been in crisis since Mr Nkurunziza was re-elected for a third term in July after an aborted coup. His opponents said it was illegal for him to stand for a third time.
Colonel Gaspard Baratuza of the Burundian army said co-ordinated attacks on three military installations had left 87 people dead.
He said more than 150 armed men raided army facilities on Friday and 79 were killed.
Eight security agents - four from the army and four from police - also died in the fighting, while 21 security officers were wounded.
Col Baratuza said government forces arrested 45 members of the unidentified group that attacked the installations.
It is not clear if the death toll includes the bodies found in Bujumbura, some of which were filmed by news agencies.
Shaker Aamer: Killing civilians is not allowed in Islam

Last UK resident of Guantanamo speaks against extremism in his first interview since being released from prison

Forty-eight-year-old Shaker Aamer is shown after his release from Guantanamo Bay (Twitter)

Middle East EyeSunday 13 December 2015
The last British resident held at Guantanamo Bay has told extremists to “get the hell out” of the United Kingdom, in his first interview since being released from the US detention facility in Cuba.
Shaker Aamer, 48, who returned to London in October after more than 14 years of detention without charge, told the Mail on Sunday killing civilians is not allowed in Islam.
“Even if there is a war you cannot kill just anybody, you cannot kill kids, you cannot kill chaplains, you cannot just go in the street and get a knife and start stabbing people," he told the Mail on Sunday.
“If you are that angry about this country (the UK), you can get the hell out.”
Shortly after the Americans invaded Afghanistan in 2001, Aamer was captured by bounty hunters and sold to US forces seeking anyone accused of being linked to Al Qaeda.
Aamer was interrogated and allegedly tortured by his American jailers, who accused him of being a recruiter and financier for Al Qaeda. He was transferred to Guantanamo Bay in 2002.
He has always denied any links to terrorism, and said he was in Afghanistan working for an Islamic charity. He was never charged or put on trial by the US and was cleared for release in 2007 – but it was not until October this year that he was finally returned home to the UK, where he was reunited with his family and youngest son, who he had never met.
Aamer told the Mail on Sunday details of his alleged torture, recreating stress positions he was held in, but said that when he was reunited with his wife, British citizen Zinneera, it “washed away” years of pain.
"At last that moment I'd dreamt of came and she came through the door," he said. "That instant washed away the pain of 14 years. It washed away the tiredness, the agony, the stress.
"It was like it no longer existed. I hugged her, she hugged me, and we just wept."
He told the newspaper of how he is learning to be a father, and spoke at length about his personal struggles to come to terms with his new freedom, but said he retains a focus on politics and fears of a growing conflict between Muslims and non-Muslims.
"It helps their [extremists'] cause," he said. "If you keep looking at people like they are terrorists before they do anything, then you will push them towards violence."
Aamer says when he was tortured by the Americans, a British intelligence officer was present at the time.
On Sunday, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in a statement: "The UK government stands firmly against torture and cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment or punishment.
"We do not participate in, solicit, encourage or condone it for any purpose. Neither does the UK make use of any so-called enhanced interrogation techniques. We have consistently made clear our absolute opposition to such behaviour and our determination to combat it wherever and whenever it occurs."
Aamer is seeking an apology from the US government for his treatment while in prison. He is also calling for the British government to openly investigate allegations of their complicity in his alleged torture.
The Saudi national is also believed likely to receive substantial compensation from UK authorities in line with what has been paid to previously released British Guantanamo Bay prisoners.

What ISIS Really Has in Mind?

ISISflag_FILE

Demagogic western leaders like Marine le Pen, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and Hillary Clinton who call for more attacks on the Muslim world are falling right into the trap laid by ISIS. ‘Onward Christian soldiers,” they cry, unaware of the dangerous desert sands they lie before them.

by Eric S. Margolis
( December 12, 2015, New York City, Sri Lanka Guardian) Recent attacks by ISIS sympathizers in Paris, London and San Bernardino, California, are not random acts of mindless violence and gory atrocities.
Far from it, they are part of a well-developed strategy by the Islamic State, or ISIS, to draw the western powers into a far larger war in the Mideast. They are being aided in this quest by the loud-mouthed right of American, British and French politics.
They are drawing inspiration from the defeats of the Anglo-British army of Hicks Pasha in the Sudan in 1883 that was lured up the Nile then ambushed and swamped by 300,000 Dervish and tribal warriors. And by the defeat in Afghanistan of the British at Maiwand in the second Anglo-Afghan War of 1880.
Five years ago, I asked an Iranian militant if he did not fear a US invasion of Iran. “We will welcome one,” he told me with a smile. “America will break its teeth on Iran.”
Five years later, it’s the turn of ISIS militants to advocate the same strategy.
The objective of ISIS and other anti-western groups is not to kill Americans, Britons and French, as many foolishly believe, but to drive the western Great Powers out of their hold over the Mideast and Muslim world.
My second book, “American Raj – How American Rules the Muslim World,” is all about this little-understood subject. No American publisher would handle this taboo subject. The book was printed in Canada and other countries.
What we call, “terrorism,” a mindless, empty term, is really blowback, a reaction from our meddling in the Mideast and South Asia.
All Muslim nations that have tried to stand up to western domination – Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, Sudan, Algeria, Somalia, Afghanistan, and most lately Yemen – have been smashed to pieces, usually by western air power. Nothing can withstand the might of the US Air Force and Navy. The skies of the Muslim world belong to US air power and its extension, Israel’s air force.
For example, US forces would have been long ago driven from Afghanistan had there not been 24/7 air cover by American warplanes ready to intervene on a minutes notice. A look at the Afghan clinic at Kunduz shredded by a fearsome USAF AC-130H gunship shows the terrifying power of America’s air fleet – the modern equivalent of the British Empire’s Royal Navy.
In the 1890’s, writing of the British conquest of Sudan and the slaughter of the Dervish Army at Omdurman, the poet Hillaire Belloc wrote the memorable lines that summed up western colonial history in the Muslim world and Africa:
“Whatever happens, we have got
The Maxim gun and they have not.”
The Maxim gun was the fist version of the machine gun.
No Mideast force could withstand western military technology on the battlefield. In 2003, the Iraqi Army met the same fate as the sword-wielding Dervishes at Omdurman. Anyone wanting to understand ISIS and its kin should hasten to see the superb, 1966 film “Khartoum.”
The only way that nations of the Muslim world could confront western forces was by close infantry tactics: fighting hand-to-hand where western air or land power could not prove decisive. Israel learned this hard lesson in its disastrous 2006 invasion of Lebanon.
Many Mideast militants regard western forces as weak and cowardly, as they rely almost entirely on air power and heavy artillery, fearing to fight “mano a mano.” They say: “ If we could only draw the western imperial forces deep into our countries and then attack them piecemeal.”
ISIS has precisely such a plan in mind. This is why it has staged such frightful provocations in Europe and the US. Osama bin Laden taught: “enmesh the imperial powers in a number of small, bloody wars. Wear them out and bankrupt them. The economy is the Achilles heel of western powers.”
Crusades rarely have positive endings.

Keith Ellison, the most prominent Muslim elected official in America, was having a pretty good day.
Never mind that the Republican front-runner in the presidential contest — Donald Trump — had proposed to temporarily bar all people of the congressman’s faith from entering the United States, roughly a quarter of the world’s population. Never mind that his House colleague — Indiana Democratic Rep. Andre Carson, the only other Muslim in Congress — received another death threat. And never mind that a Republican colleague — Iowa Rep. Steve King — was, at that very moment, questioning his patriotism in the press, saying the Detroit-born progressive Democrat has not sufficiently denounced Sharia law. Ellison had greeted King with a smile several times that day, even shaking his hand.

Front National fails to win any region in final round of local elections

Marine Le Pen’s far-right party misses out, a week after achieving record support, says exit poll

 in Paris-Sunday 13 December 2015
France’s far-right Front National has failed to win control of any regions in the final round of local elections despite a historically high score in the first-round when it was ranked as the most popular party in France.
The defeat of the FN was down to mass tactical voting, an increase in turnout and warnings by the left that what it called the “antisemitic and racist” party would bring France to its knees. All this combined to stop the FN translating its huge first-round score of nearly 28% into the overall control of any region.
But the Socialist prime minister, Manuel Valls, deliberately avoided any triumphalism and did not claim that the steady rise of the far-right party had been definitively stopped.
“Tonight there is no relief, no triumphalism, no message of victory,” he said. “The danger of the far right has not been removed – far from it – and I won’t forget the results of the first round and of past elections.” He said it was now the government’s duty to “listen more to the French people” and “to act in a stronger, faster way” particularly on employment in a country with record joblessness.
He conceded that tactical voting was not enough to counter the far right and win support: “We have to give people back the desire to vote for and not just against.”
Exit polls on Sunday night showed that with less than 18 months to go until the next French presidential election, the nationalist, anti-immigration, anti-European FN still gained hundreds of regional councillors across France — tripling its presence on regional councils and extending its nationwide reach, cementing its grassroots powerbase and boosting its quest for power nationwide.
Despite the FN failing to grab its first region, Marine Le Pen will still use her party’s first round breakthrough performance as a springboard for her bid for the 2017 presidential election.
Addressing her supporters, Le Pen presented her party as the victim of “calumny and defamation” by the government who she said had “intimidated and infantilised” voters by teaming up with its rivals on the right to keep the FN out of power.
She said the tactical voting by leftwingers who chose Nicolas Sarkozy’s rightwing Les Républicains party in order to put up a “barricade” against the FN had already played into her claim that she and her voters were the victims of an elitist system that persecuted them. She vowed during the campaign that her voters would take their revenge by turning out in even greater numbers during the presidential campaign.
Le Pen herself failed to capitalise on her high first-round score in the vast northern region of Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie, after the Socialist party pulled out of the race and made an extraordinary plea for its voters to chose Sarkozy’s candidate Xavier Bertrand just to stop Le Pen. First estimations showed that Bertrand, Sarkozy’s former employment minister, won with a resounding 57% of the vote.
In an emotional speech, Bertrand said it was not his “victory” and implored the political class to reinvent itself to counter the rise of the FN.
Le Pen’s 26-year-old niece, Marion Maréchal-Le Pen, 26, an MP and rising party star hoping to lead the southern region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, was also kept out by the tactical voting of the left for another Sarkozy candidate, the hardline mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi. First estimations showed he had won by about 54.4%.
The defeat of both the Le Pens showed the difficulty of a far-right personality to get past the 50% threshold when faced with a mainstream candidate. This is crucial to the presidential election where Le Pen is expected to make it to the second-round run-off.
Turnout was up by around seven percentage points on the first-round, especially in areas where the FN could have won, suggesting a strong mobilisation to beat the party. There had been a marked rise in requests for proxy votes between the two rounds.
First estimates showed the left had performed better than expected, winning at least five regions. Sarkozy’s Les Républicains also stood on around five regions, a poorer showing than might have been expected for the main rightwing opposition party, given that two of those regions were won with the support of tactical leftwing voters.
The outcome appeared to comfort the Socialist prime minister’s tactic of agressively warning of the damage the FN could cause. He had warned that if the FN won, it would foster divisions and “this division could lead to civil war”.
He called it a party that “didn’t love France”, that cheated French people and that would bring the country to its knees. The Socialist party leader Jean-Christophe Cambadelis had also warned that the FN would be like returning to the wartime Nazi-collaborationist Vichy regime except “under Vichy it was the Jews [who were targeted]. Now it’s Muslims.”
Marine Le Pen had slammed the tactics and political manoeuvering as undemocratic, accusing her opponents of “intellectual terrorism” in seeking to block her party’s path to power.
The FN was once simply content with attracting protest votes for the gruff ex-paratrooper Jean-Marie Le Pen, but it has radically changed strategy since his daughter Marine Le Pen took over in 2011, seeking to build a base of locally elected officials to target the top levels of power.
Marine Le Pen’s strategy is to take positions of power across the country. She hopes the good first-round showing, despite not winning any regions, will boost her chances in the 2017 presidential race where polls suggest she could knock out a mainstream candidate and reach the second-round runoff.
Le Pen has led a drive to detoxify the party and move away from the racist, jackbooted, antisemitic imagery of the past. But the party’s hardline positions on Islam and immigration remain unchanged. Since the Paris terrorist attacks last month, the FN’s key concerns – the refugee crisis, security, the place of Islam and national identity – have become the main talking points in France, personally benefiting Le Pen.
The FN sought to capitalise on the sense of disaffection with the mainstream political class, high unemployment, inequality and social despair in a range of areas from rural villages to the northern rustbelt. The party had also capitalised on the migrant crisis, particularly in Calais where thousands of migrants are camping in squalid conditions in the hope of reaching Britain.
