The Illusionist

Manipulation, fuelled with good intent, can be a blessing. But when used wickedly, it is the beginning of a magician’s karmic calamity.”  ― T.F. Hodge, From Within I Rise
Watch him closely and with circumspection. Our former President, Mahinda Rajapaksa, never goes and comes; he appears and disappears. It is the sorcerer’s or magician’s skill that he employs to good effect.Like the sorcerer, he concentrates on effect. Hirunika Premachandra, promising young female MP, in a recent Satana TV program perceptively characterised Mahinda Rajapaksa as an actor par excellence. She is dead right.
Throughout his rule Mahinda exhibited this characteristic and even now, while in opposition, he shows how adept he is at this magician’s game. Recall the images where Mahinda appeared in many public places with several shining gold rings on his fingers and the concealed hypnotising device known as the washee bole? On such occasions, Mahinda used to wave his hand in a spell-like fashion. Like Sai Baba, Mahinda Rajapaksa materialises.
Well, that defines the essence of the man who ruled Sri Lanka for ten long years and is now scheming a come-back to taste power, again. He never, ever took the real responsibilities of governance seriously. Mahinda had been a playboy in his youth running around, like his son Namal now, in cars. He found his way to be President of the country also in a pretty magical way, turning defeat by Ranil Wickremesinghe into victory for himself allegedly by winning over Prabhakran with a bribe. That he never governed with any professionalism is obvious to the plainest mind. Never caring about the quality of the men he chose as Ministers and about their capability in managing the portfolios he gave them, he rather preferred only their loyalty obtaining that voluntarily or by hook and crook. Unlike the less opulent authoritarian Premadasa before him, Mahinda cared little about monitoring his Ministers’ progress. Premadasa over-monitored and got into hot water. Not so, Rajapaksa; he didn’t give a damn about the progress and performance of his Ministers. Never spoke a word against corruption and waste.

Just over ten years ago, a powerful undersea earthquake caused a devastating tsunami that rapped around two-thirds of Sri Lanka’s coastline on Boxing Day, at around 8:30am. Being a holiday, locals were fishing, bathing and playing on the beaches. Within a matter of minutes some 35,000 people were dead, thousands were missing and over half a million survivors would soon be displaced.

Five route permits to Maj. Neville from ‘Yaha Paalanaya!’

thiru nevil Tuesday, 16 June 2015
Maj. Neville Wanniarachchi, the personal bodyguard of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, has been given five private bus route permits by ‘Yaha Paalana’ regime, say reports reaching Lanka News Web from reliable sources.

Neville has been assisted in this by Thiru Nadesan, notorious deal maker of the previous as well as the incumbent regime, and husband of former minister Nirupama Rajapaksa. Neville had applied through Thiru for the licenses, with the latter promising the former that the licenses would be secured somehow, and got it done through his close connections with the ‘Yaha Paalana’ regime.
Gota said no to politics after hearing these deals!
Former defence secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has come to know, along with evidence, that strongmen of the former Rajapaksa regime had reached such deals with the ‘Yaha Paalana’ government.  Now, forgetting all his past conduct, Gota has strongly rebuked Mahinda and other leaders of the previous regime over this. This situation has made him to reconsider his entry to politics, since he will have to engage with such deal makers if he is in politics. By now, Thiru has become Mahinda’s ‘link to the present government.’ Picture below, courtesy the media unit of the former president, shows the super filling station Neville has built at Weeraketiya junction by using the money he had amassed through illegal means during the Rajapaksa regime.

Mahinda issues press notice accepting misuses of vehicle

TUESDAY, 16 JUNE 2015
lankaturthFormer president Mahinda Rajapakshe has mentioned that a luxury Prado Jeeps which was met an accident at Kudawella in Tangalle on 9th June was not belonging to presidential secretariat by issuing a press notice to the media on 14th June.
It has exposed to the general public now that he kept several unregistered vehicles under his custody during his regime with this accident. Details on the vehicles used by Rajapakshe Regime are being revealed from the investigations being carried out by CID.
It is evident from the accident and press release that Rajapakshe family had used several vehicles by force not only vehicles belonging to the presidential secretariat but also vehicles donated by various international organizations during Rajapakshe Government.
With this accident former president Mahinda Rajapaksa was rushed to come forward to make a press release to give various explanations for the allegations and hewas rejecting the allegation made against his wife, former first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa by mentioning that "the said two vehicles were offered by the World Food Organization (WFO) to Siriliya foundation as a gift after using them for emergency relief work by WFP for several years.
According to the press release, the two Prado vehicles bearing red number plates CR 109 and CR 114 had been used by Siriliya for 10 years without registering them. It is also mentioned in the same press release that these two vehicles had been left for 3 years in Weeraketiya area without using them," but their appearance prove that they have been used and maintained properly during the said period.
The efforts taken by former president Mahinda Rajapakshe to hiding the truth by releasing a press note has now boomeranged as most of hided information are now being disclosed with his press release.
12 Chinese men with forged e-tickets deported

2015-06-17
A dozen Chinese men who had obtained tourist visas to enter the country by producing forged return electronic tickets were nabbed by officers of the Department of Immigration and Emigration on Monday.

The men who were staying at a lodge on the Marine Drive in Kollupitiya were taken into custody by the Monitoring, Intelligence and Investigation Unit of the Department. The foreigners had arrived in Colombo on June 3rd and 6th and stayed at the lodge in a discreet manner.

Upon being questioned they had told the Immigration officers that they were waiting for an agent to find them jobs at a construction site.

A Chinese national who already works at a construction site in Colombo had promised to find them jobs. They had had no intention of returning to China after the expiration of their 30-day tourist visa.

According to sources, the foreigners had violated Immigration law by entering the country with the help of forged documents.
The forged return e-tickets proved that they never intended to return after the tourist visas expired, the sources said. (Kurulu Koojana Kariyakarawana)

Sirasa owner’s sexual jealousy against Magenta boss!

maharaja exTuesday, 16 June 2015
Sirasa Media Network’s owner, 75-year-old Killy Maharaja is having a sexual jealousy against Prashan Subramaniam, who owns Magenta Advertising, say sources at Sirasa. This is after Prashan snatched a girl from Killy’s harem.
According to our sources, Basil Rajapaksa had told the Sirasa boss to obtain Mahinda Rajapaksa’s advertisements from Magenta Advertising, which supervised the campaign of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa at the last presidential election. Although Basil asked him to obtain election advertisements worth Rs. 360 million, the Sirasa boss told him that Magenta could not be paid the commission for that much of advertisements. Then, Basil inquired from the person who had coordinated the deal, as to why the 15 per cent commission normally paid to an advertising agency cannot be paid to Magenta Advertising. The coordinator’s response was, “Oh, Sir. Our boss will not touch Magenta even if he is given one billion worth of advertisements. Don’t you know, it is because Prashan was caught snatching a bit belonging to the boss. The boss told me to get the 360 million directly.”
Accordingly, Killy had got Magenta Advertising sidelined and directly obtained Rs. 360 million for Mahinda Rajapaksa’s advertisements. In addition, he had obtained Rs. 527 million more for the Sirasa TV and radio sponsorship to portray that Rajapaksa’s rallies were attended by huge crowds. That much alone was charged purely to edit the videos to highlight the crowds. The coordinator for this project on behalf of Sirasa Media Network was Killy’s closest female friend, group directress Nedra Weerasinghe, while Shamindra Rajapaksa, second son of Chamal Rajapaksa, coordinated from the then government’s side.
Also, president Maithripala Sirisena paid Rs. 200 million to Sirasa for his election advertisements, and at the rate of three for one, he was given free advertisments worth Rs. 400 million. In return, the president appointed Sirasa new director as his media spokesman and recently granted nine more frequencies to Sirasa Media Network. The president had given the order to Telecommunications Regulatory Commission chairman Suhair, to issue Sirasa with these frequencies from the official room of Killy, when he had gone to open the pandal at the Sirasa Vesak zone, say Sirasa sources further.
As reported by us previously, Killy obtained three million dollars to promote the Colombo port city project. Director Chevaan Daniel coordinated that campaign. Recently, a programme by Ran Bima, aimed at promoting the port city project, took place at Galle Face Green, where the chief guest was president Sirisena. Sirasa has so much belittled the head of state that only Daniel and announcer Priyantha Wijesinghe were there there receive him. However, Sirasa was able to get all Chinese officers of the project to participate in order to seal the deal. This makes it clear that president Sirisena has become a puppet of Killy. Just like it did to Mahinda and Gota, Sirasa will show the way (Sirasai Paara Kiyanne) for Maithripala Sirisena to his destruction.

Sri Lanka Civil Society Condemns South Africa For Not Handing Over Sudanese President to ICC

Omar al-Bashir

Sri Lanka Brief16/06/2015
STATEMENT OF CONCERN ON THE SOUTH AFRICAN GOVERNMENT’S FAILURE TO ARREST AND SURRENDER PRESIDENT AL-BASHIR TO THE ICC
We, the undersigned groups and individuals in Sri Lanka, express our deep disappointment and outrage over the failure of the South African authorities to apprehend and detain President Omar al-Bashir of Sudan during his recent visit to South Africa for an African Union (AU) summit. This is in a context where President al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) to face trial on charges of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Not only was President al-Bashir permitted to participate in a highly publicized conference, he was also permitted to leave South Africa in direct violation of an interim order issued on Sunday 14 June by a High Court in Pretoria. This direct violation of the court’s order rendered unenforceable the same court’s welcome ruling the following day that the failure of the authorities to arrest al-Bashir was unconstitutional, and that al-Bashir be arrested and detained pending surrender to the ICC.

Kurdish Forces Seize Key Border Town from the Islamic State

As Arabs flee northern Syria, claiming ethnic cleansing by Kurds, reports from the Islamic State stronghold in Raqaa say the caliphate is bracing for a siege.
Kurdish Forces Seize Key Border Town from the Islamic State
BY DAVID KENNER-JUNE 15, 2015
AKCAKALE, Turkey — Syrian Kurdish fighters seized the Syrian border town of Tal Abyad from the Islamic State on Monday, handing the jihadi group a major defeat and cutting off a key supply line to its de facto capital in Raqqa. The battle, however, has also forced thousands of civilians to flee into Turkey and has exposed old fault lines between Kurds and Arab citizens of northern Syria.
Redur Xelil, spokesman for the People’s Protection Units (YPG), the Kurdish militia in the area, confirmed that the town had been captured. Battles still continued in the southern countryside, he said, where an alliance between the YPG and Free Syrian Army-affiliated groups was trying to clear Islamic State fighters from the towns on the road to Raqqa, which lies roughly 60 miles to the south.
“Daesh had a stronghold in the city, but the YPG broke it and killed many of them,” Xelil said, using the Arabic acronym for the Islamic State. “Those who are still alive and can’t go back to Raqqa escaped to Turkey.”
The Islamic State is preparing for a possible attack on Raqqa, according toRaqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently, a network of activists devoted to spreading news about the city. The jihadi group isdigging trenches north of the city, and its preachersannounced from mosque loudspeakers that residents should stockpile food and flour in preparation for a coming siege, the activists reported.
The anti-Islamic State coalition threw its weight behind the offensive in Tal Abyad, devoting almost its entire air campaign in Syria to supporting the forces in the area. Over the last two weeks, it launched 23 airstrikes near Raqqa and 64 airstrikes in the neighboring areas of Hasakah and Kobani, where Kurdish forces advanced from the east and the west, according to U.S. military statements. By comparison, the coalition only launched 14 airstrikes in all other areas of Syria during this time.
The capture of Tal Abyad deprives the Islamic State of a key border crossing with Turkey, from which it smuggled everything from iPhones to bomb-making fertilizer. But for many of the thousands of refugees who crossed into Turkey to flee the fighting, the story is not so simple.
Khodr al-Fadel, a 25-year-old farmer from Syria’s northeastern Hasakah governorate, has spent the past month being chased by war. He was forced to flee west from the fighting when the YPG drove the Islamic State from his home, and he kept on moving until he reached Tal Abyad, where he was squeezed between the jihadi fighters and the Kurdish advance to the east and west. He and thousands of his compatriots camped out on the border with Turkey without food or water for days, while imploring the Turkish military to let them in. After three people died, he said, the Turks eventually relented and let some people in.
It is not the Islamic State, however, but the Kurdish forces who scare Fadel the most.
“We saw them burn houses, burn the crops,” he said. “They just do this to Arabs. The Islamic State didn’t burn our houses or property; they just stole the cars.”
Fadel’s story coincides with reporting that alleges the Kurdish YPG has carried out a campaign of ethnic cleansing in northern Syria with the aim of ridding the area of its Arab population. It is a claim echoed by many of the Arab refugees who crossed into Turkey, as well as by more than a dozen Syrian rebel groups, which released a statement condemning the displacement.
Xelil, the YPG spokesman, vehemently denied the allegations and promised that all civilians would eventually be allowed to return to their homes.
“There is no truth to this, and it’s just a propaganda war paid for by questionable and suspicious groups,” said Xelil. “We ask the media to come to this area to see the truth, and they will know that it is just lies.” So far, restrictions put in place by the Turkish authorities have made it impossible to gain access to the area.
U.S. officials may cheer the Islamic State’s latest defeat, but the Kurdish advance could escalate tensions with Turkey, one of America’s most important allies in the region. The YPG is closely linked with the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), an insurgent group that fought a bloody 30-year war with the Turkish state. Turkish officials, therefore, are deeply hostile to the growth of an autonomous YPG-controlled area along their border.
“Turkey feels that countering ISIS through military measures, without a political plan [to resolve the entire Syrian conflict], is not helping at all,” said Kadir Ustun, the executive director of the SETA Foundation in Washington, D.C. “It’s simply allowing the various groups to advance their own agenda, and the PYD’s agenda is to secure territory in Syria and forget about the unity of Syria.”
The PYD, or Democratic Union Party, is the political wing of the Kurdish movement and is closely affiliated with the YPG, which serves as its military arm.
For the thousands of new Syrian refugees, however, the international political wrangling matters less than where they are going to get their next meal. Fadel and his family of 10 have been camped out within site of the border crossing for days — not because they are hoping to cross back into Syria, but simply because they have no idea where to go. Food and humanitarian assistance are hard to come by. The Turkish police have at times given them water and chocolate biscuits. The family, along with their 5-year-old child, is sleeping on the trash-strewn ground.
“On the inside, we’re afraid of death and bullets,” Fadel said. “You see what it’s like here: We’re waiting for death, just without the bullets.”

THE SUNDAY TIMES’ SNOWDEN STORY IS JOURNALISM AT ITS WORST — AND FILLED WITH FALSEHOODS

The Intercept

(updated below)
Western journalists claim that the big lesson they learned from their key role in selling the Iraq War to the public is that it’s hideous, corrupt and often dangerous journalism to give anonymity to government officials to let them propagandize the public, then uncritically accept those anonymously voiced claims as Truth. But they’ve learned no such lesson. That tacticcontinues to be the staple of how major U.S. and British media outlets “report,” especially in the national security area. And journalists who read such reports continue to treat self-serving decrees by unnamed, unseen officials — laundered through their media — as gospel, no matter how dubious are the claims or factually false is the reporting.

'Black' activist resigns helm of US civil rights group

Rachel Dolezal resigned from the Washington state chapter of the NAACP under pressure from group
i24news EnglishPUBLISHED-June 15th 2015
A US civil rights activist resigned Monday from a post at the leading African-American advocacy group amid allegations she is white but has masqueraded for years as being black.
Rachel Dolezal's resignation from her job as president of the Spokane, Washington chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People came as her parents, who are white and says she is too, urged her to seek counseling.
The Washington state chapter of the NAACP posted Dolezal's resignation letter on its Facebook page.
In it, she writes that her commitment to the "racial and social justice movement" is undiminished but that "the dialogue has unexpectedly shifted internationally to my personal identity in the context of defining race and ethnicity."
Dolezal, 37, built a career as an activist in the black community of Spokane.
She rose to become the president of the city's branch of the NAACP and served as an independent mediator for the city's police force.
Neither position required that she be black, but media reports said Dolezal identified herself in application forms and in various public appearances and writings as black.
She apparently resigned under pressure from the civil rights group.
"I have always deferred to the state and national NAACP leadership and offer my sincere gratitude for their unwavering support of my leadership through this unexpected firestorm," Dolezal wrote.
Her parents insist their daughter, from whom they are estranged, is white.
Since the story went national last week they have provided local media with a birth certificate and photographs of Dolezal as a blonde, fair-skinned child.
Now, as an adult, she is tawny skinned and dark haired.
AFP/FileAFP/File"Rachel Dolezal rose to become the president of Spokane's branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)"

- Baffled by daughter's actions-

Speaking on Monday on ABC News, prior to the resignation, parents Lawrence and Ruthanne Dolezal said they were baffled by what their daughter has done.
They said they have known for years but kept quiet until reporters came to them recently and asked about their daughter.
"Rachel is trying to reject her own reality, her own identity, and by doing that she does not alter reality," Ruthanne Dolezal said.
She said that if she had the chance to speak to her daughter now she would urge her to get help.
"I would say, 'Rachel we love you. We hope you'll get the help you need to deal with your own personal issues so that you can know and believe and speak the truth,'" Dolezal said.
Dolezal has dodged questions seeking clarification about her race and ethnicity and she does not address her race in the resignation letter.
Last week Spokane newspaper the Spokesman Review reported she had told them: "I feel like I owe my executive committee a conversation."
"That question is not as easy as it seems," she said after being contacted at Eastern Washington University, where she is a part-time professor in the Africana Studies Program.
"There's a lot of complexities ... and I don't know that everyone would understand that."
And she broke off an interview with a local TV reporter when he asked her point blank: "Are you African American?"
Her parents, who adopted four black children, said their daughter had always been interested in issues of ethnicity and diversity.
But around 2007, they learned from a newspaper article that she was claiming to be African-American.
At that point she had already severed contact with her parents.
