The search for hidden assets of leaders of the previous Government has gone into high gear ahead of parliamentary elections. In Colombo this week to assist the local investigative agencies in this task were officials of the US Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Justice. Their visit is the direct outcome of the May visit to Sri Lanka by Secretary of State John Kerry. During his talks with Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera, Kerry assured Sri Lanka the US Government’s fullest support to trace foreign assets and assist local agencies in ongoing investigations.

It was with much interest that we looked forward to your participation in the Satana Program of 28 May 2015 on the burning topic of “Ethics, the law and the death of Vidya”. We did not expect much from Mrs Vijayakala Maheswaran nor Mr Ranjith Soysa. However many of us were disappointed with your response. Of course at the time we had forgotten that even when you were faced with verbal sexual harassment from former Minister Kumara Welgama, you didn’t address it seriously enough. You also did not object to sexually coloured comments directly made to the participants by Mr Mervyn Silva, where you too were in the panel of judges at a reality show. Furthermore, when you were affronted by Mr S. B Dissanayake’s uncouth comments to Ms Chandrika Kumaranatunga, did you raise your objections?

Cultivate real knowledge

Despite the fact that you have been exposed to the discourse on gender based violence over a long time and despite the fact that you were a significant part of the Women’s Commission set up by Mr Ranil Wickremesinghe and even being one of the co-chairs of the Women Parliamentarian’s caucas, you seem not to have grasped the fundamentals behind gender based violence. It will be good for a start for all 13 women parliamentarians to have a close mentoring from Mr Bimal Ratnayake, who seemed to have an in depth knowledge and able to properly analyse the situation and the social landscape. எமது இளைஞர்கள் ஆயுதம் ஏந்தி ஒரு காலத்தில் அரசுகளையே ஆட்டிப் படைத்து வந்துள்ளனர். அப்போதிருந்த அரசுகளால், வெளிநாட்டு உதவியைப் பெற்று பெரும் செலவுடன்தான் அவர்களை அழிக்க முடிந்தது. தமிழ் இளைஞர்கள் இனியும் ஒன்று சேரக் கூடாது.

அவர்களை நடைப் பிணங்களாக்க வேண்டும் என்ற எண்ணம், சில அதிகார பீட அலுவலர்களிடமும், அரசியல்வாத அமைச்சர்களிடமும் எழுந்தது. வடக்கு, கிழக்கு இளைஞர்கள் பலரை அழித்து ஒழித்து விட்டோம். ஆனால் அவர்கள் மீண்டும் எழமாட்டார்கள் என்பது என்ன நிச்சயம்? என்று அவர்கள் சிந்தித்தார்கள் அதற்காகவே போதைப் பொருள்களை இங்கு திட்டமிட்டு அறிமுகம் செய்தார்கள்.

இவ்வாறு நேற்றுக் குற்றஞ்சாட்டினார் வடக்கு மாகாண முதலமைச்சர் க.வி.விக்னேஸ்வரன். உதயனின் உலகக் கிண்ண கிரிக்கெட் கொண்டாட்டத்தின் பரிசளிப்பு நிகழ்வில் பிரதம விருந்தினராகக் கலந்துகொண்டார் அவர்.

மாணவர்களே உஷாராக இருங்கள் குறுக்கு வழியில் மனமருட்சியைப் பெற எத்தணிக்கும் செயற்பாடுதான் போதைப் பொருள் பாவனை. ஆனால் மிகவும் கொடிய பாதிப்புக்களை இவை ஏற்படுத்தக் கூடியன. யார் யாரோ வேண்டும் என்றே திட்டமிட்டு போதைப் பொருள்களைக் கல்லூரிகளிலும், பாடசாலைகளிலும் விநியோகித்து அதன் பாவனையை ஊக்குவித்து வருகின்றார்கள். சிறு கடைகளில் எல்லாம் சிறிய பொதிகளில் பல்வேறு பெயர்களில் அவற்றை விநியோகிக்கின்றார்கள். 

காலத்திற்கு காலம், அவற்றை அறிமுகம் செய்யும் மார்க்கங்கள் மாற்றப்பட்டு, வெவ்வேறு விதங்களில் எமது மாணவர்களுக்கு அவற்றை கிடைக்க வைக்கும் பிரயத்தனங்கள் தொடரந்து நடந்து வருவது தெரிகின்றது. இவற்றை விநியோகிப்பவர்களை நாங்கள் அடையாளம் காணும் வரையில், எமது மாணவச் செல்வங்கள்தான் உஷாராக இருந்து தம்மைத்தாமே காப்பாற்றிக் கொள்ள முன் வரவேண்டும்.

திடசங்கற்பம் எடுங்கள் 

சாரயம், சிகரெட் போன்றவற்றின் பாவனையிலும் பார்க்க போதைப் பொருள் பாவனை மிக அபாயகரமான பாதிப்புக்களை ஏற்படுத்துகின்றது. அண்மையில் புங்குடுதீவில் இடம்பெற்ற வன்புணர்விலும் கொலையிலும் ஈடுபட்டவர்கள் போதைப் பொருள் பாவனைக்கு அடிமைப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருந்தனர் என்றும் தெரிவிக்கப்படுகின்றது. 

போதைப் பொருள் பாவனையை முற்றாக ஒழிக்க வேண்டும் என்று மாணவ சமுதாயம் திடசங்கற்பம் எடுத்தால்தான் அதனை ஒழிக்க முடியும். மனமிருந்தால்தான் மார்க்கம் உண்டு. திருடராய்ப் பார்த்து திருந்தாவிட்டால் திருட்டை ஒழிக்க முடியாது. அதேபோல் போதைப் பொருளை ஒரு பொருட்டாகக் கருதமாட்டோம், அதனைத் துச்சமெனத் தூக்கியயறிவோம் என்று மாணவர்கள் நினைக்க முன்வந்தால்தான், அதன் பாவனையை நிறுத்த முடியும். 

பலவித அரசியல், பொருளாதார, புலணுணர்வு சார்ந்த காரணங்களுக்காக எம்மிடையே இந்தப் போதைப் பொருள் விநியோகம் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கின்றது. இந்தப் போதைப் பொருள் அறிமுகப்படுத்தப்பட்டதன் பின்னணியில் முக்கியமான அரசியல் காரணங்களும் உண்டு.

விடுதலையுணர்வை சிதைக்கும் ஆயுதம்

பணம் புரட்டுவதும் நோக்கம்

எமது இளைஞர்களிடையே போதைப் பொருள்களை அறிமுகம் செய்யப்பட ஒரு அரசியல் காரணம் பின்னணியில் இருந்து வந்துள்ளது என்பதை அறிய வேண்டும். போதைப் பொருள்களை விநியோகம் செய்பவர்களை எமக்குக் காட்டிக் கொடுக்க மாணவ சமுதாயம் முன்வர வேண்டும். இந்தச் சதியிலிருந்து தப்ப முயற்சிக்க வேண்டும்.

சில அமைச்சர்கள், உயர் பதவிகளில் இருந்தவர்கள், சில காலத்திற்கு முன் அதிகாரத்தில் இருந்த பலர் அண்மைக் காலம் வரையில் போதைப் பொருள் விநியோகத் தொழில் மறைமுகமாக ஈடுபட்டிருந்தார்கள். 

இதனை தற்போதைய அரசு கண்டறிந்துள்ளது. ஆகவே செல்வாக்கு மிகுந்தவர்களின் உந்துதலின் பேரில் இந்தப் போதைப் பொருள் விநியோக வியாபாரம் வடக்கில் நடந்து வந்துள்ளது என்ற முடிவுக்கு வரலாம். 

பணம் புரட்டுவதும் அவர்களது நோக்கம். அதனால் சீரழிவது எமது மாணவ இளம் சந்ததியினர். நன்மை அடைவது, பெரும் பணம் படைத்தவர்களும் இடைத் தரகர்களும் மாணவ முகவர்களும்.

அடையாளம் காட்ட முன்வாருங்கள்

இளைஞர்கள் இடத்தில் புலணுணர்வைத் தூண்டி விட்டால், முதலில் அவர்கள் போதைப் பொருள் பாவனையாளர்களாகத் தொடங்கி பின்னர் அதற்கு அடிமையாகிக் கடைசியில் போதைப் பொருள் விற்பவர்களாகவும் மாறி விடுகின்றனர். போதைப் பொருள் பாவனைக்கு அடிமையானால் அதிலிருந்து தப்ப முடியாது. 

எனவே தொடர்ந்து அதனைப் பாவிப்பதற்கு பணம் வேண்டும். அதனால்தான், அவர்கள் விற்பவர்களாகவும் மாறுகின்றனர். இதனால்தான் முதலில் அறிமுகம் செய்தவர்களையும், விநியோகத்தவர்களையும் நாம் அடையாளம் காண முடியாது போகின்றது. 

விரைவில் மத்திய அரசுடன் இணைந்து, போதைப் பொருள் பாவனை ஒழிக்க போதிய விழிப்புணர்வு நிகழ்சிகளிலும் குணமாக்கும் நடவடிக்கைகளிலும் நாம் ஈடுபடவுள்ளோம். 

போரின் பின்னர் வடக்கு கிழக்கு மாகாணங்களின் அபிவிருத்தியையும் மக்களின் தேவைகளையும் பூர்த்தி செய்ய என்ன கருமம் ஆற்ற வேண்டும் என்பதில் பத்திரிகைகள் தமது முழு நாட்டத்தையும் செலுத்த வேண்டும். அதே நேரத்தில் மக்களின் நலனுக்கும் தீங்கு விளைவிக்கும் ஏதுக்களை கண்டறிந்து வெளிக் கொண்டு வர வேண்டும். 

தவறுகளைச் சுட்டிக்காட்டுங்கள்

எமது குற்றங்குறைகள் எதுவாக இருந்தாலும் சுட்டிக்காட்டுங்கள். எமது மக்கள் அறிவுக் கூர்மையும் திறமையுங் கொண்டவர்கள். புதியனவற்றை தேடும் இயல்பினர். 

அவர்களைச் சரியான பாதையில் திசை திருப்பினோம் என்றால், ஏனைய மாகாணங்கள் எல்லாவற்றிலும் பார்க்க சகல துறைகளிலும் முன்னணியில் நிற்கக்கூடியவர்கள். அதற்காக ஊடகங்கள் தமது பங்கைச் செய்ய முன்வர வேண்டும். 

வடக்கிலுள்ள ஒவ்வொரு உள்ளூராட்சி மன்றமாகப் பரிசீலித்து, அவற்றிலுள்ள குறைபாடுகளை பத்திரிகைகள் வெளிக்கொண்டுவர வேண்டும். அந்தக் கிராமத்தில் செய்யக்கூடிய செயற்பாடுகள் பற்றித் தெரியப்படுத்தி, மாகாணசபை அவற்றைச் செய்ய வேண்டும் என்று நிர்பந்திக்கலாம். இதனூடாக இந்த விடயங்கள் உலகறியச் செய்யப்படும். 

இதனை வெளிநாடுகளிலுள்ள, ஏதேனும் உள்ளுராட்சி மன்றம் வசதியற்ற எமது உள்ளுராட்சி மன்றங்களை வளர்சியடையச் செய்யக் கூடும். 

எமது ஊடகங்கள் மக்களுக்கு நன்மை பயக்கும் விதத்தில் செயலாற்ற முன்வரவேண்டும். அப்படிச் செயலாற்றுகிறார்கள். இன்னமும் செய்ய வேண்டும். 

போதைப் பொருள் விற்பனையாளர்கள் சமூக விரோத செயற்பாடுகளில் ஈடுபடுவோர் பற்றியும் எமக்கு எடுத்துரைக்க முன்வரவேண்டும். இது ஊடகத்தில் உள்ளவர்களின் உரிமையுடனான உத்தம பங்கு. அதை ஆற்றுவீர்கள் என்று எதிர்பார்கின்றேன் என்றார்.

Sri Lanka's former first lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa was on Monday grilled by police over alleged corruption in an NGO which she ran during her husband Mahinda Rajapaksa's presidency, the latest in a series of questioning of his family members.

She was questioned by the Financial Crime Investigation Division (FCID) at a location outside the headquarters for over two hours, sources said. She was summoned for an inquiry over alleged corruption in connection with a bank account of the 'Carlton Siriliya Saviya' Foundation, a non-governmental organisation.

An investigation is currently being carried out into the bank account of the 'Siriliya Saviya.' The former First Lady is the patron of the foundation. Local media quoted her media coordinator as saying that the former first lady had obtained funds from overseas for her humanitarian work in a transparent manner and she never got involved in politics.

The Rajapaksa clan has dubbed the investigations against several of the former regime members as a political witch-hunt. Rajapaksa charged that his successor Maithripala Sirisena's government was out to jail all members of his family, including himself.

Rajapaksa's younger brother Basil, the powerful economic development minister, is under remand custody for alleged financial wrongdoings under his ministry. The other brother, Gotabhaya, who was the top defence ministry bureaucrat, has been questioned several times by the anti-graft commissions as well as the FCID.

The government says many complaints of corruption and wrongdoings by the Rajapaksas when in power have surfaced after his defeat to Sirisena in the January presidential election. The FCID was set up to fast-track investigations but the opposition members who back Rajapaksa have questioned its legality.

Rajapaksa, who is mulling a political comeback, has found resistance from Sirisena who does not want to allow him contest the next parliamentary election as the UPFA coalition's prime ministerial candidate.

However, Rajapaksa backers who held a press conference today said Sirisena was not the sole authority in the UPFA to give party tickets to contestants and its executive council will nominate Rajapaksa.
Sirisena is expected to call a fresh parliamentary poll soon.

Having met with a barrage of flak for my article”Are Women To Be Blamed For Rape?” from a section of the online readers, as much as I take it all on a positive stride for the awareness created, I believe the burning issue of rape is yet to be taken seriously… let alone be addressed.

Unfortunately, more than the plight of victims itself, the absence of a practical solution coupled with the lack of will makes the situation look even more poignant. To make matters worse, the moment sensible suggestions are put forward, the supposedly ‘learned’ ones tend to blow a fuse when they realize of a possible requirement to make ‘lifestyle’ adjustments for the greater good of the not-so-fortunate living amongst us.

Clarifying any misconceptions one might have based on my last article, AT NO STAGE have I justified rape, blamed the rape victim or made an indication of being an apologist for the perpetrator. Readers need to understand the difference between blaming a victim and blaming probable and/or negative external influences behind such crimes. Readers also need to understand the fact that this is not about a struggle between them women and us males. Belonging to a right-thinking humane society, we as a nation should be united against a common enemy… an unknown enemy at that who does not even have an established profile.

It is also unfortunate that to date, there exist not an effective judicial system nor a pilot plan to contain the menace. Having read comments on my Facebook page by ill-informed feminist voices about the need to teach boys not to rape, about the need to teach sex-education at schools and for insisting on being oblivious to possible indecent behavior of the very same creature that rapists gets attracted to, I was quite surprised by their limited knowledge of ground realities. Also of their failure to understand the minority status of the abnormal minds living amongst us men.

Little girl rescued from abductor

The Puttalam police, with the help of residents rescued a schoolgirl who was forcibly taken into a jungle by a man for immoral purposes. The girl, a first-year student of Anagarika Dharmapala Vidyalaya in Puttalama was rescued after about an hour.

Wikileaks: Athas Fears Retaliation For Critical Articles On Gota’s MiG Deal

“Defense Correspondent Iqbal Athas is preparing to temporarily leave Sri Lanka with his family following a barrage of threats and intimidation apparently orchestrated by the Government of Sri Lanka (GSL). On August 12, he wrote an article for the Sunday Times about the Ukrainian Government’s inquiry into ‘irregularities’ in the sale of four MIG-27 aircraft to Sri Lanka. On August 14, a Sinhala version of the article was published in a local paper. The next day, the government withdrew Athas’s security detail. Since then, demonstrators have gathered to protest in front of his house, a man claiming to be a retired Air Force officer threatened to kill his translator, and he has received warnings that he may be kidnapped and questioned about his sources. Athas’s situation has received extensive coverage in both local and international media. One of Athas’s employers, CNN, and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) have championed his case. Ambassador Blake telephoned the Defense Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa on August 24 and told him that it would be bad for Sri Lanka if anything were to happen to Athas. Embassy believes the widespread publicity this case has received, and its own efforts, will give some measure of protection to Athas and his family. Post will continue to keep in close touch with Athas and intervene further if required.” the US Embassy Colombo informed Washington.

The Colombo Telegraph found the related leaked cable from theWikiLeaks database dated August 30, 2007. The cable is classified as “CONFIDENTIAL” and written by the US Ambassador to Colombo Robert O. Blake. 

The ambassador wrote; “Defense Correspondent Iqbal Athas is preparing to temporarily leave Sri Lanka with his family following a barrage of threats and intimidation from the GSL. Athas writes regularly for the Sunday Times, a local English-language newspaper, and also frequently contributes to CNN, Jane’s Defense Weekly and the Times of London. On August 12, he wrote an article for the Sunday Times about the Ukrainian Government’s inquiry into “irregularities” in the sale of four MIG-27 aircraft to Sri Lanka. In his article, he noted that the third-party facilitating company, Bellimissa Holdings, seemed to exist only on paper, while the GSL claimed the deal was handled directly between the two states. Athas published extensive details on the transaction, even reprinting the letter of credit issued by a GSL-owned bank for the planes.”

Ambassador Blake telephoned Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa on August 24 and told him the U.S. was concerned about Athas’s safety and that it would be bad for Sri Lanka if anything were to happen to such a prominent columnist.

“Gothabaya said ‘Iqbal should not worry… there should not be any problem at all.’ He noted that other journalists had written more damning articles and survived.” Blake further wrote.

President hints at death penalty for drug offences

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday proposed that capital punishment should be given to those found guilty of drug trafficking in the country.

He said he hoped to send his proposal countrywide through the media in order to obtain public opinion in this regard and take a decision following its outcome.

Addressing an event to mark International No-tobacco day yesterday at the BMICH, the President said there would be opposition once this proposal is introduced.

It is true that not only in Sri Lanka but all over the world there is an agenda and a policy for all private media institutions and semi government media institutions who call them as “Public Media”

When some media institutions openly promote their agenda some media institutions stealthily implement their boss’s necessity.

Sometimes the boss can be drug dealer involved in money laundering, at times the boss can be a gambler who influences public to indulge in gambling and invest that unlimited profit into his media.

However there is a special media culture meant for Sri Lanka which has come to light in the recent past.

It is the disgraceful media usage of the S-Lon pipe plumbers Sirasa/MTV networks.

Despite there is no desire for the author to contempt the plumbers trade but in spite of having a media network and if there is an inferiority complex trying to control the state service according to his whims and fancies it is necessary to provide medication for the inflicted ailment.

It is not a secret that many British leaders kneeled down to the world’s strongest media magnate Rupert Merdoch. However Merdoch and those leaders knew their boundaries.

Therefore however a powerful media magnate did not suffer from an inferiority complex for an extent of creating a “King maker”

We cannot see that the owner of Sirasa/MTV network chairman Kili Rajamahendran has not even followed the footsteps of Rupert Merdoch.

Kili Rajamahendran who could not send his media coolies to the parliament from the UNP national list created an animosity with the UNP leader Ranil Wicramasinghe. As a result he indulged in a disgraceful media campaign to promote Gotabaya’s loyalist Sajith Premadasa as the UNP leader.

Although the attempt foiled Kili Rajamahendran is once again following the policy of attacking Prime Minister Ranil Wicramasinge.

Kili’s media favorites too are shamelessly fulfilling their boss’s requirement.
Maharaja has no problem to know whether his media coolies fulfilling his necessity with a proper media knowledge or not.

Politicians like Sri Ranga, Susil Kendelpitiya and Marikkar’s disgraceful conduct in Sirasa/MTV is a new ingredient in Maharaja’s shameless media culture.
If people’s representatives can indulge in their legal profession I (author) don’t see anything wrong of them to engage in another work.

The problem is how a person like Ranga who was very close to the Rajapaksa, who was involved in many illegal and corrupt partnership deals with MP Namal Rajapaksa, who was a frequent visitor of Temple Trees who is alleged with egregious frauds and corruption has the moral right to cover himself in a white cloth and pretend to question his fraud partners who comes in Minnal prgrammes.
The ironic point is that if the fraudster is a favourite of Rajamahendran there is no problem for the Sirasa who raise its voice against anti corruption.

By the way there is not much difference of the role played by Susil Kindelpitiya.  If these two people wished to stay in media they could have left politics and remained in the media. By entering politics they clearly fulfilled their bosses demands, didn’t they? That is to manipulate the Parliament and the Provincial Councils according to the tune of Sirasa. In response if Kindelpitiya or Marikkar excrete a fart it is a “Breaking News” for Sirasa.

It is ridiculous that Sanjeewa Ranathunga who does not know ABC in politics acting in “Satana Programme” fulfilling the agenda of his boss.

The author contemplates Milinda Moragoda a snow white character sometimes back who appeared on behalf of Rajamahendran at this moment.

Sometimes back I was able to watch an interview in Sirasa with a person addicted to drugs.

The reporter raised a quaint question from the drug addict
“Are you a drug addict?”

The author cannot realize why the reporter raised such a contemptuous question.

Consider how it should have been if the interview was with a whore?

If the recording was done without knowledge why the editor unable to edit before broadcast?

The shortest answer is that if the institution is behaving according to the desire of his close henchmen’s there is no problem for the boss about ethical media culture and its standard.

U.N. diplomat pushes to hold Yemen talks, Arab air strikes pounds Houthis

Efforts to bring Yemen's warring factions together to discuss their conflict have made some progress, officials said on Monday, as warplanes from a Saudi-led coalition mounted more air strikes against the dominant Houthi group.

Neighbouring Oman is trying to end more than two months of fighting that has killed nearly 2,000 people by mediating talks between U.S. officials and representatives of the Houthi group.

Political sources in Oman, Yemen's eastern neighbour, confirmed on Monday that diplomats were brokering the talks between Houthi and U.S. officials at a hotel in the capital Muscat aimed at finding a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Independent politicians in the Yemeni capital Sanaa said the talks have succeeded in narrowing gaps between the Houthis and the exiled government to pave the way for eventual United Nations-backed negotiations in Geneva.

"There's progress in the talks toward an agreement on a long truce and reviving political dialogue," one politician told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Oman is the only member of the six-country Gulf Cooperation Council not taking part in the military campaign in Yemen, and has played a role as a peacemaker in the strife-torn region.

The United Nations envoy to Yemen, Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, has also achieved progress in efforts to convene talks in Geneva, Yemeni government spokesman Rajeh Badi said.

He said progress was made on "the date, agenda and framework for the Geneva talks and the parties that attend the meeting" and that a formal announcement was expected within hours.

Ould Cheikh Ahmed was in the Saudi capital Riyadh for talks with Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi, political figures and the government headed by Vice President Khaled Bahah. Before that, he held talks with Houthi leaders in Sanaa.

Previous plans for talks in Switzerland were postponed due to objections by the Riyadh-based Yemeni government, which wants the Houthis to quit Yemen's main cities and recognise Hadi's authority before speaking to them.

An Arab alliance has been bombing the Houthis since late March in a bid to restore Hadi to power. The Sunni Muslim states see the Houthis as a proxy for the influence of archrival Iran in impoverished Yemen.

The United States, the main ally of the world's biggest oil exporter Saudi Arabia, has provided the kingdom with weapons and intelligence during its war against the Houthis.

The Houthis want a ceasefire as a precondition for talks, and the Yemeni politicians say the U.N. envoy has made progress toward an agreement on a five-week ceasefire and the release by the Houthis of several detained pro-Hadi figures - including the defence minister and the president's brother.

AIR STRIKES

Saudi planes and artillery on Monday bombed the Houthis' northern stronghold province of Saada, bordering the kingdom.

The Houthis, who swept into Sanaa in September and fanned out across the country, say they are winning a revolution against corrupt officials and hardline Sunni militants.

Air strikes hit military positions aligned with the Houthis in Sanaa on Sunday, and residents reported the sounds of explosions and anti-aircraft fire continuing into Monday.

Warplanes also dropped bombs on Houthi fighters on the outskirts of Aden, a bastion of support for Hadi and scene of heavy clashes between the two sides.

A near-blockade of Yemeni skies and ports by the Arab coalition has led to severe shortages of food and fuel to its 25 million people, and aid groups have warned that the continuation of fighting could deepen the humanitarian crisis.

Famine Early Warning Systems, a monitoring group focusing on hunger, said on Monday that food price increases and lack of income could soon push remote areas of Yemen into emergency.

"Due to the continued impact of ongoing shocks, food security outcomes are likely to deteriorate over the coming months," the group said in a statement.

The Local Rescue Committee, a Yemeni humanitarian group in the southern province on Dhalea, said residents in the area were suffering.

"Food, fuel and electricity are in short supply while sickness is spreading due to poor sanitation and stopped rubbish collection, meanwhile Dhalea is cut off by Houthi militias from resupply in every direction," a committee official said.
