Over 700 people detained at Gota’s terror camp in Trincomalee: TNA

February 20, 2015
ColomboMirror
Making a startling revelation in the country’s parliament, Sri Lanka’s top Tamil party charged on Thursday that over 700 people have been detained at a secret Sri Lankan army camp, known as “Gota’s camp” in the Eastern port city of Trincomalee.
Army base in Trinco“Over 20,000 have been forced to disappear during and after the war amid reports that many of them are held in various secret camps elsewhere in the country. We have reliable information that over 700 people have been detained without any outside links at the secret Gota’s camp in Trincomalee,” Jaffna District Parliamentarian of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA), Suresh K Premachandran told parliament yesterday.
“We urge Minister of Law and Order, John Amaratunga to investigate into this reports and reveal the identity of those who are held at this secret camp,” he said.
Suresh P
MP Premachandran, who is also the official spokesman of the TNA also alleged “over 35 families have been held in the Trincomalee naval base secretly without any outside links”.
“Of the 35 families detained inside the Trincomalee naval base, some families have already been released. The Minister of Law and Order should also reveal the identity of the rest. The Tamil people have contributed immensely in establishing good governance in the country. If you are sincere in your claims that you are working closely with the Tamil people, you should immediately investigate into these allegations and ensure justice for their loved ones,” he said.
Sri Lanka’s embattled north and the east have often seen series of protests by the families and relatives of hundreds of thousands of people, who were forced to disappear during and after the bloody that ended in May 2009.
Although the new government of President Maithripala Sirisena has promised to release a couple of hundred people who were being held for a long time without any charges against them, none of them have been release today.

TCSF Expresses Disappointment Over OISL Deferral

Colombo TelegraphFebruary 20, 2015
The Tamil Civil Society Forum (TCSF) has today expressed its deep disappointment on the UN Human Rights Council’s decision to defer the report of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Inquiry on Sri Lanka (OISL) by six months.
“We do not believe that there were adequate reasons for the deferral of the report” the TCSF said.

TCSF Convener – Bishop of Mannar, Dr. Rayappu Joseph
Issuing a statement the TCSF said;”We wish to point out with utmost disappointment that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Council and the relevant states had ignored the unequivocal request from all sections of the Tamil polity not to delay the release of the report. The announcement of the deferral sadly reminds us of 2008 when the UN left Kilinochchi contrary to the wishes of the local population to remain with them and provide humanitarian protection.”
We publish below the statement in full;
Statement on the Deferral of the Report of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ Inquiry on Sri Lanka (OISL)
We are extremely disappointed that the UN Human Rights Council has decided to defer the report of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Inquiry on Sri Lanka (OISL) by six months to September 2015. We are even more disappointed that the recommendation to defer the report originated from from the UN Human Rights Commissioner. Victims who engaged with the OISL see the postponement as completely unnecessary and as a possible final blow to any further search for accountability through international means. Given their lack of confidence in any domestic mechanism delivering on accountability, Tamils are afraid that the delaying of the report signals an end to the hope for accountability, truth and justice in Sri Lanka, in its entirety.
We wish to point out with utmost disappointment that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Council and the relevant states had ignored the unequivocal request from all sections of the Tamil polity not to delay the release of the report. The announcement of the deferral sadly reminds us of 2008 when the UN left Kilinochchi contrary to the wishes of the local population to remain with them and provide humanitarian protection.
The UN High Commissioner in his media statement of 16 February 2015 provides two reasons for the postponement of the report to September 2015:
(a) the possibility of the inquiry receiving important new information
(b) cooperation from the new government on a broad range of human rights issues.
Regarding (a) above we believe that this reasoning will only be credible if the OISL team is given access to Sri Lanka and given full freedom and access to engage in evidence gathering. The Sri Lankan Foreign Minister’s letter to the High Commissioner dated 13 February 2015 does not promise engagement with OISL specifically. Given that the Government does not promise cooperation with the OISL inquiry, the High Commissioner needs to clarify as to how he envisages OISL receiving new information.
Regarding (b) we are not convinced that this is a sufficient basis to postpone the report. Why should the Government’s willingness to act on present day human rights issues be a bar to releasing a report on accountability for the past? We are well aware of the OISL mandate to monitor on going violations but this need not be read as impeding any efforts taken by the Government to improve on the human rights situation in the country.
We however do not think that in the past month of the new Government taking office there have been any significant improvements in those human rights issues that significantly and directly affect the Tamil people. The new government similar to its predecessor has also confirmed that there will be no scaling down or withdrawal of troops from the North-East. The government has published a gazette notification under the public security ordinance extending the granting of police powers to the Sri Lankan armed forces. The Government has promised resettlement in the Valikamam High Security Zone in Jaffna but has in fact has only rehashed an abandoned model resettlement village programme initiated by the former government, which will not allow people to go back to their original lands. It has so far remained silent about the plight of the IDPs in Sampur (Trincomalee), Mullikulam (Mannar) and Keppapilavu (Mullaitivu).
The promise on the part of the Sri Lankan Government to allow for a visit of the High Commissioner and that of the UN Working Group on Disappearances we suspect have instrumental motives of wooing international opinion in their favour while not delivering on substantial issues. This expressed willingness to engage with UN mechanisms sits in contradiction to the Sri Lankan Government’s position of rejecting the UNHRC resolution of 2014 and the OISL inquiry.
We have detailed in our 12 February 2015 letter to the High Commissioner (in which we urged that there be no deferral of the report) as to the reasons that point to the impossibility of setting up a credible domestic accountability in Sri Lanka.
For the above stated reasons we do not believe that there were adequate reasons for the deferral of the report. We insist that the High Commissioner should officially request the Government for the OISL team to have access to Sri Lanka. If not it will only strengthen the understanding that the deferral of this report was made for extraneous political considerations.

CID after murderous clique in SL Navy

FRIDAY, 20 FEBRUARY 2015
lankaturthA comprehensive investigation has been launched by the CID to apprehend nine officers of SL Navy including three senior officers regarding an incident in which 28 Tamil youths were said to be abducted and murdered say reports. Initial investigations have revealed that ransom money had been obtained from several youths before they were murdered.
According to CID the abductions have taken place between 2008 and 2011 and the youths abducted had been detained at Navy camps in Troncomalee and at Chaithiya Road in Colombo.
Identity cards of five youths and a passport have been found in a drawer when examining an office of one of the suspect senior navy officers. Investigations indicated that the youths, the owners of the identity cards and the passport, had been killed.
The organized clique had abducted five Tamil youths from a place at Mt. Lavinia. The CID states Navy officers have given evidence how a senior Navy officer abducted the youths and took them away in a white van. CID states youths from Kotahena, Bluemendhal, Mt. lavinia, Wellawatta, Bambalapitiya in Colombo and from several other areas had been abducted.
The manner 11 of the 28 youths of those who were abducted were murdered has been already revealed and a comprehensive investigation is being carried out by the CID to find out how the other youths were murdered.
Among the officers in the clique that are to be apprehended is a senior officer who had been a former spokesman for the Navy and another who has gone abroad to follow a foreign course. The CID officers conducting the investigation say steps have been taken to get down the officer back to Sri Lanka.
It is also reported that certain senior officers of the Navy as well as certain officers connected to the legal sector are attempting to protect the perpetrators.

Urgent reshuffle of Cabinet after Maithri returns: tainted John to be ousted

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News- 19.Feb.2015, 11.30PM)  Urgent changes are to be effected to the ministerial cabinet after President Maithripalal Sirisena returns to the Island from India after the conclusion of his tour , based on highly placed sources within the government.
It is learnt that the President is forced to take this decision because , the present government which made a solemn pledge during the last Presidential elections that it would take stern action against all those corrupt and fraudulent ministers and MPs irrespective of their status or powers is now confronted by  protests and allegations from within the government and  outside that it has not honored  its pledge .
Already the faith reposed in the government by the people is somewhat eroded on this account . In the circumstances , the President has  taken this decision to effect a cabinet reshuffle.
John Amaratunge ‘s ministerial portfolio , which also concerns   peace and order that  includes the police department is to be given over to another minister . It is strongly believed  this arm  of the ministry is to be brought under the purview of a ministry that is not under a UNP minister.
The Presidential secretariat has decided to probe whether the arrest of Duminda Silva , the UPFA M.P. has hitherto been obstructed  because of the intervention and instructions of John Amaratunge.
Duminda Silva is right now facing charges under the money laundering Act and the dangerous drugs Act following  investigations into the  depositing of foreign monies in many billions collected by Gotabaya on his illicit  arms deals into bank accounts of Duminda, as well as Duminda’s  collection of monies from Wele Sudha the large scale international drug trafficker . The president has received information that Amaratunge has abused his ministerial duties and acted to  obstruct the arrest of Duminda Silva based on the on going investigations .
The officers of the CID had been allegedly halted from taking Duminda into custody because of Amaratunge’s conduct , abuse of ministerial functions and illegal orders given to the police. The presidential secretariat is to conduct a special investigation into the dastardly and disgraceful conduct of minister Amaratunge in the wake of shocking information received by the president .
It is reported that Duminda Silva M.P. had promised many millions of rupees as kickbacks to minister John , as well as to carry out his publicity campaign free at the upcoming elections via  the television channels and broadcasting stations belonging to Duminda’s family members . Minister John had agreed with this proposal . In the complaint made to the President these facts have been exposed.
AAt all events ,already a voluble hue and cry has been made and pressures brought to bear on the President from within the government itself by UNP, as well as from the outside by the JVP ,JHU and several forces  of the general public against the on going investigations which are most reprehensibly inadequate from the standpoint of  efficiency, efficacy  and effectiveness , and it is characterized by lethargy , and providing opportunities to the crooks and culprits who have devastated this country’s economy and the young generation to buy time for their manipulations to escape from the arms of the law or to subvert sacrosanct justice itself.

165 m dollar commission from H’tota water supply schemes goes to whom?

water
Friday, 20 February 2015
A leading MP of Hambantota is to receive a 165 million US dollar commission from six drinking water supply schemes in the district that were to be implemented last year by leading Israeli firm Baran International Group, reports say. The MP is to receive the commission for his having raised the cost of the projects from 185 m USD to Rs. 350 m USD.
A female Israeli entrepreneur Orna Zoauri has brought Baran International to Sri Lanka for these projects. However, the local agent of the firm is Roshan Motha and his lawyer, an Israeli Amos Avivi. In launching the projects in 2013, the authorities in the then government had been deceived by furnishing false information and got the projects approved through the MP in question.
Later, Motha and Avivi had undercut Zoauri, misled Baran Internatinal and got the entire projects under them. She has filed a case against the two at the Colombo commercial high court, and it was lawyer Sujeewa Senasinghe, present deputy justice minister, who has appeared in the case.
During the presidential election, Senasinghe described to the media how they had got the cost of the projects increased from 185 m USD to 350 m USD. Now, the Israeli ambassador in Sri Lanka has informed the company that approval would not be given for the projects as the local agents had discredited Baran International and bribed various persons.

Leadership Training, Student Orientation & Ragging In Sri Lankan Universities

Colombo Telegraph
By Kumudu Kusum Kumara -February 19, 2015
Dr. Kumudu Kusum Kumara
Dr. Kumudu Kusum Kumara
New comers to the university need orientation for several reasons. Most of our students come from rural areas and the university life is a new environment for them geographically, socially and academically. As common to humans they need to be oriented to the new environments to make the transition to new life.
Originally Sri Lankan universities had orientation courses in the universities. The leadership programs could have been held in army camps to avoid ragging of newcomers by the seniors. Unlike the university an army camp has residential facilities to conduct a program of this nature for a large number. Students, the majority of whom come from rural areas, may see leadership training as an additional qualification to compete in the job market in addition to the adventure it offers. They may also appreciate the opportunity for being able to make friends out of a peer group.
However, the orientation would be best if it takes place in the new environment one is relocated to. In that sense an external location is not the best place to have this program. It all depends on what is the key interest in organizing the orientation.
The idea of an orientation program is to get the new comers to make the transition from being an outsider to become part of the University community to the extent that they will be able to continue their educational activities successfully in an environment conducive. Internationally it is the practice to have such orientation programs in the university itself and in the city in which it is located.
Ragging
While in the Sri Lankan universities there could be the problem of seniors interfering in such activities we have to find a solution that. It is said that this is what gave rise to the idea of a leadership program outside the university.
However, even though students have undergone the leadership training program once they come to the University they are still being subjected to ragging. It has come to a point where now first year students rag first year students.
Ragging has not been prevented or stopped because the leadership program was given outside the university. Even though students who come to the University come with the leadership training they are subjected to ragging by the seniors. Secondly it is reported that first year students who are in the University hostels are used by senior students to rag the first year students who are in the hostels and who are day scholars.
The domination of the first years by the seniors is so severe, any student who would try and stand up to them will be subjected to severe forms of harassment.
We must have orientation programs. I think an orientation program should be developed by the teachers of the faculties. University lecturers should prepare an orientation program collectively taking into consideration the academic and practical needs of the new students who come to Universities.
That could include some of the aspects which are already there in the leadership programs. Any physical training given to first year students should be voluntary based on their willingness to participate and not compulsory. But the academic aspects should be made compulsory because they have come to do academic work. That could include practical aspects like time management. The idea is that what we would want to teach university students is how to develop self- discipline and not regimentation or military type discipline. It is a time for young people to grow up to be mature and responsible adults who will academically excel in their work and be able to be innovative in thinking.
Now there is an idea that education should prepare undergraduates for employment and therefore their learning should be practically oriented.
This notion has also been now added to the earlier idea of academic training. There is no harm in adding but we must have a clear idea of what we mean by practical training which remains to be developed. Here, we should not forget that even teaching subjects in humanities and social sciences involve learning analytical reasoning skills, better critical thinking, the ability to innovate and be creative, effective oral communication, and writing etc. all of which have practical value in the world of work as well.
The orientation program, as I said earlier, should facilitate the students’ transition to university life.
It should be an occasion for them to meet other first year students, build a sense of community and friends, connect with and begin to feel at home in the university environment and meet with the academic departments to choose their first year courses and organise their new life in the university.
Here the senior students could be involved under the guidance of academic counselors to run a program borne by university lecturers who are the real academic leaders in the university. Seniors should be encouraged to develop a welcome ceremony for the newcomers where the latter are accepted into the community.
That has to be done in a kind of reconciliatory way of mutual acceptance rather than seniors imposing their authority on the juniors.
The overall orientation program should be developed by the academics in the Faculty where they take leadership into their hands guiding the seniors to welcome the juniors under their strict supervision eliminating any form of ragging and violence in the process.

A Tale of Two Chief Justices: From Process to Principles – Part I

Groundviews

By Luwie Ganeshathasan and Sanjayan Rajasingham-

Introduction
The declaration that Mohan Peiris’s appointment as Chief Justice was void ab initio (invalid from the beginning), and the subsequent reinstatement of Dr. Shirani Bandaranayake, raises many questions. What was the legal basis for these acts? Was the proper procedure followed in deciding that a legal basis existed? Or was this a case of the new government mirroring the old, using force to remove an inconvenient judicial officer? Now that the tumult surrounding these events has died down, we can engage in a thoughtful and sober analysis of these questions. This piece attempts to do so, beginning with the legal basis of the reinstatement.

Reappearance of Rajapaksa Cult at Nugegoda

MR_Rally_Feb18
by Laksiri Fernando
( February 20, 2015, Sydney, Sri Lanka Guardian) It was very true that those who gathered in ‘a hundred thousand’ or those who spoke on behalf of Mahinda Rajapaksa at Nugegoda didn’t care about ‘corruption, human rights violations or dictatorship.’ As Dayan Jayatilleka has opined they WANTED him for the ‘Nation’ instead.

Only Baba obtains distress loan for 10 years

slbc
The distress loan, which had not been paid to any SLBC employee for the past 10 years, had been paid to its then additional director general (now acting DG) Erananda Hettiarachchi alias Baba.

Last November, the then chairman Hudson Samarasinghe approved a Rs.500,000 disaster loan for Baba, although it was him who had suspended this payment.
Baba’s ability to get the chairman to approve the suspended distress loan itself is an indication of his close connections with top people in the previous regime, say SLBC employees.
They question as to what extent good governance is being practised when Baba, who expects personal gains from the new government too, is allowd to remain further in a top position at a state institution.

MR Was Like A Terrorist: SF

Sarath Fonseka says former President Mahinda Rajapaksa was acting like a terrorist during his regime and says he brought more harm to the country than LTTE leader Prabhakaran.

Fonseka and Mahinda
Former Army Commander and Democratic Party Leader Sarath Fonseka, answering a question during an interview in the ITN last evening on his worst enemies said that MR was governing the country using ways and means that would have been followed by a terrorist.
“I would say Prabhakaran is the worst enemy – he was a ruthless terrorist that targeted and killed thousands of innocent civilians. He was a dangerous enemy but it was in the battlefield. . . But after his death, I realised that there was another individual who was destroying the country and meant to harm the people. . .” he said in his response, referring to MR.
He said that MR was going to do more damage to the country than Prabhakaran and that is why de made a decision to enter politics and challenge MR.
“This enemy of mine tried to kill me in various ways – in fact the whole of Rajapaksa family was out to get me. . . MR was acting like a terrorist, actually worse than a terrorist,” he told the interviewer.

Forgers and politicos dealing in Ethanol , heroin , gold, of former government free while police persecute UNP people’s representative

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News- 19.Feb.2015, 11.30PM) While all the fraudsters , heroin peddlers , swindlers and rogues of the former government (which  was thrown out lock, stock and barrel by the people )  who indulged in large scale illicit businesses including drugs and ethanol are free , enjoying  all the  fun and frolic , it is most reprehensible that the police are chasing behind the UNP representatives who did not commit such egregious wrongs or heinous crimes.
It is reported that  a team of officers led by IP Neville Silva of  the Colombo crime investigation department(CCD) has last day 17th visited the home of UNP provincial councilor Niroshan Padukka , surrounded it and done a search of the premises
The police had also told   wife of Padukka (who was not at home ) that they will take Padukka too into custody in the same way as Palitha Thevaraperuma.
The background to  the boorish  police behavior is as follows :
It is the objection raised by Padukka against the monk (who is a henchman of Gotabaya) who is  constructing  a commercial building belonging  to the  Vihara and Devale under the temple ordinance , near the Boralesgamuwa police that has triggered this police investigation.
As this monk has deployed soldiers of the army and civil security forces to erect this building outrageously violating all the laws,  Padukka  as a people’s representative has threatened    to go to  the police along with soldiers of the civil security force. The monk on the other hand , who is himself trespassing not only on temple land but even Buddhist tenets had complained to the police that Padukka  with a crowd had committed criminal trespass by coming to   his temple premises.
It is based on this complaint the CD officers have arrived today  searching for  Padukka.
In this  situation , the following crimes committed by high profile politicos merit exposure :
Wife of Wimal Weerawansa who had in her possession two forged passports.
The notorious ‘kudu ‘ Duminda who brought in container loads of heroin .
Gotabaya who gave orders to kill unarmed citizens at Rathupaswala , and supplied arms to terrorists . In this instance the police had been unable to even record a statement of his despite the gravity of the offence.
The ex Prime minister and his secretary who requested to release a container load of  heroin.
Shiranthee Rajapakse, wife of ex president against whom there  are charges of selling gold illicitly , and had accounts on the sly.
The politician who openly said , the legs of journalist  Poddala Jayantha were broken by him /his group .
It is very unfortunate politicos like Padukka who acted in the best interests of the people are being harassed and embarrassed while all these crooked politicians , and their   cronies  who had outrageously and openly committed the worst crimes are still free , and worse still continuing  to indulge  in rackets , forgeries , heroin peddling , illicit gold sales  and  violence since they are as free as a bird , and are  encouraged by the climate of  impunity they enjoy .

JVP warns govt. against delay in taking action

lankaturthFRIDAY, 20 FEBRUARY 2015
“43 days have gone by since this government has been brought to power. No procedures have been taken within the 50 days of the 100 day programme of the government regarding serious frauds and corruption committed during the previous regime. The JVP would take to the streets with the people if such procedures are intentionally delayed. We have already arranged an agitation opposite fort Railway Station on the 26th.”
This was stated by the Information Secretary of the JVP Vijitha Herath addressing a media conference held at the head office of the JVP at Pelawatta today (20th). The President of Inter Company employees’ Union Wasantha Samarasinghe too participated.
Mr. Vijitha Herath further said, “The JVP is criticizing the government regarding the delay in investigating the complaints of frauds and corruption that have been brought up against the previous regime and we are mediating to prevent such delay and accelerate the procedures. Rajapaksa family rule and its chums massively exploited state resources and assets. We made this criticism even before the presidential election. After the election we, in addition to our criticisms, complained with evidence on 13th January to the Bribery Commission regarding those who are charged with mass scale frauds and corruption. We commenced our exercise exactly five days after the presidential election.
While many were talking about those who had committed small scale frauds and corruption, we complained with evidence against Mahinda Rajapaksa, Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, Basil, Namal, Ajith Nivad Cabraal, Sajin Vaas gunawardene, Rohitha Abeygunawardene, Johnston Fernando and several others. Subsequently, we were called for the Commission once to get information but no investigation has been started by the Commission.
We have complained to the Bribery Commission and the CID. We also have complained to Court of Appeal. 43 days have gone by since this government has been brought to power. No procedures have been taken within the 50 days of the 100 day programme of the government regarding serious frauds and corruption committed during the previous regime. There is only a statement that a committee had been appointed to investigate the complaints. 40 days have gone by to appoint this committee. The expectation of all people, in spite of their political affiliations, was to see the thieves who plundered public assets being punished. Now, this expectation of the people is being denied to them. We have been mediating and would mediate in the future to fulfill this expectation of the masses. The government that could not investigate bribes and frauds of the ministers of the previous government has been very quick in issuing a circular to provide vehicles and fuel to ministers of the previous government. People did not expect perks and facilities for thieves. They expected them to be punished. Good governance cannot be created in this manner.
The charges against KP are those that were stated by Lakshman Hulugalle who was the media spokesman of the Ministry of Defense. KP had used several passports. He had bought ships. There was the issue of a large amount of money and gold. He was also involved in international arms racket. Former Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa too had made the same charges. However, there has been no investigation regarding him since 2009. We filed a petition in the Court of Appeal on 19th January. We asked for an order to arrest KP and carry out investigations. The petition was heard on 27th January. Further hearing was put off to 5th February. The Attorney General’s Department informed that time was needed to forward a report on KP. Accordingly, we appeared before Court on 19th February. No investigation report was forwarded. It was stated that the Attorney General’s Department had not received any report on KP from security sections. Even today he is maintaining an NGO in Killinochchi with the protection of security sections. Why couldn’t the Attorney General get information about him? The whole country knows about KP. The world knows about him. There are complaints against KP in India as well. However, there are no reports about him in our country. Is the reason for the delay a manipulation by a hidden hand? Why does it take so much time? Instead of accelerated procedures the snail pace is followed. Despite KP being in custody for several years, there is not even half a sheet of paper of a report against him.
Legal action against mass scale fraudsters doesn’t take place when action against fraudsters is postponed. As a result there won’t be any stop to frauds and corruption in the society. As soon as election results were announced there was an attempt in the morning on the 9th to withdraw Yoshitha Rajapaksa from the Navy. Now he has left the country on special privileges.  Comrade Nalinda Jayatissa complained to the Defense Secretary regarding Yoshitha Rajapaksa. While a committee had been appointed to investigate this complaint Yoshitha left the country. Who allowed him to go abroad? The Defense Secretary was sent a written complaint again. Basil Rajapaksa fled to the USA. Now a three months leave has been approved for him. Yoshitha Rajapaksa too has taken leave from the Navy. Action should be taken regarding these immediately. The JVP would take to the streets with the people if taking legal action is further delayed. We have already arranged an agitation opposite fort Railway Station on the 26th. We would have to take such action to draw people’s opposition to the delay in taking action against fraudsters. The government should immediately mediate to take legal action against those who were engaged in frauds and corruption.”
The President of Inter Company Employees’ Union Wasantha Samarasinghe speaking to the media said, “In the interim budget proposals presented on 29th January the private sector employees were told they would be given Rs.2500 salary increase. The private sector employees as well as state sector employees should be given a salary increase of Rs.10,000. For, both buy goods from the same shop. They all have the same COL. We have informed this to the Minister of Finance and the President. The government is marking time without giving the private sector employees the minimum increase of Rs.2500. It had been said salaries would be increased through wages boards. Wages board is an antiquated, worthless structure. It is said that there are already 43 such boards of which five are inactive. What the wages board does is to decide the minimum wage. As a result the salary increase for private sector employees is getting delayed. We demand the government to adopt in Parliament a bill like the No. 36 of 2005 and get the salaries of the private sector employees increased. The salaries of private sector employees have not been increased even by one rupee since 2006. We do not accept deceptive statements of the government. A gazette has not been issued yet regarding the Rs.280 living allowance. The employees of the private sector sacrificed a lot to send home Mahinda Rajapaksa regime and bring in Mr. Maithripala Sirisena. Now their aspirations are being shattered even before the 100 day period approaches. We demand the government to adopt a Parliamentary bill within the hundred day programme to increase salaries of the private sector.
An agitation campaign would be held at Katunayaka on the 25th to demand the government for this action. Agitations would be held at Biyagama, Ratmalana and other places. If the government doesn’t listen to us we would hold a massive rally in Colombo in March. As such, the government should immediately take action to solve the salaries issue.”

Ex-port chairman swindled from walkie-talkies too!

priyath wickramabadu
Friday, 20 February 2015
Sri Lanka Ports Authority workers recently filed a complaint with the Bribery or Corruption Commission against their former chairman Priyath Wickramabaduge, which is just one of the thousands of wrongdoings he had committed. According to the complaint, he had rented 50 walkie-talkies from Dyna Com without calling for tenders, with a monthly payment of Rs. 4,770 for each walkie-talkie. It has now come to light that Priyath had received a Rs. 3,000 commission from each walkie-talkie.
Accordingly, he has received Rs. 150,000 for these walkie-talkies, which amounts to Rs. 1.8 million annually.
Had the SLPA bought radios instead, the monthly cost would have been between Rs. 1,500 – Rs. 1,800 only. Therefore, the institution had to waste Rs. 2,970 for each walkie-talkie, which amounts to Rs. 148,500 per month in total, and Rs. 1.78 m annually.
The most serious matter is that despite a new government being in power, this contract still continues. Owner of Dyna Com Arthur Senanayake is a close friend of Wickramabaduge and received the tender without the proper procedures. Our sources say, Senanayake still pays Rs. 150,000 a month to his friend. Therefore, the ex-chairman has become so fortunate that without a position, he is able to receive a commission even under the present Yaha Paalanaya (good governance).

How Did Navy Grant Three Months Leave To Yoshitha? JVP

YoshithaColombo Telegraph
February 20, 2015
The JVP had criticized the government and the Sri Lanka Navy for allowing Rajapaksa prince ‘Yoshitha‘ to leave the country while an investigation is ongoing against him.
During a press conference held today, JVP MP Wijitha Herath had said it is unfortunate that the state pf special privileges given to the Rajapaksa ‘prince’ during the previous regime has not changed.
“We have lodged a complaint against the special privileges granted to Yoshitha Rajapaksa in his capacity as a Navy official and an investigation is continuing into the complaint we made. However, the Navy has granted him three months leave and he has not even been summoned by the committee inquiring into the allegations we have made,” he told the media.
The MP had also expressed his dissatisfaction over the slow pace of investigations launched into LTTE leader KP.
