Discussion over a mysterious printing press in a Navy camp

printing 12

A discussion has now commenced on certain media about a mysterious printing machine that has been recently purchased by the ruling party.
The report was first published on Lanka News Web stating that a newly purchased high tech printing machine from Germany was to replace an existing printing machine at the Welisara Navy Camp.
The purchase, installation and operation of this new machine were reportedly being carried out by a son of a powerful member of the government and a group of selected navy personnel.
German experts were also to be brought down to install the printing press.
However, following reports in the web media as well as a private electronic media channel, the printing press was to be transferred on Wednesday (3) to another location.
According to reports, the press was to be taken to the Navy camp in Trincomalee by a group of selected navy personnel.
However, there were doubts on whether the printing machine would be taken to Trincomalee or a secret location due to the prominence received by the matter in the media.
Private television station, TNL TV reported on this issue and highlighted that a public discourse has commenced over the newly acquired printing press and doubts were cast whether it was brought to print material targeting the forthcoming Presidential election.

For Tamils Trying Times At Their Worst

In what appears to be a choice less confrontation, what can the Tamils do? If they vote for the incumbent President, he is sure to win and rivet his despotism on them and the country still further. If they refrain from voting, they give a victory to the existing regime on a silver platter. If they vote sluggishly and lukewarmly for the common candidate at a fifth of their potential, they make no difference besides getting entangled in the non-negotiable snares of the JHU. So what are the options left if their goal and target is regime change and if they are earnest about it?
One and only one. To realize acutely the strength of their full potential and to vote decisively for Maithripala SirisenaHe will have the wise and moderating counsel of age and experience in Sobitha Thero,Chandrika, Ranil and Sampanthan. To vote with verve to reach more than five times their performance at the 2010 election. Then regime change will become a fact of life. This will overwhelm minor formations. The vote will make the voter a force to be reckoned with. The voice of the Tamils will begin to be heard.
Ranil Maithri Chandrila Fonseka 1When a time comes to test our weight, we Tamils cut ourselves to size. Then we lament the loss of weight and bemoan that we have lost a bonus seat or two. In the 2010 Parliamentary election we had about 550,000 countable votes. Yet votes counted for 14 successful candidates was 233,000. From the JHU, 2 successful candidates had 232,000 votes. Comes 2015 Presidential election and in weighing importance, a whole minority community is treated on par with this fragment of the majority community.
Delving into the recent past it is seen that the power of the Tigers grew exponentially in a matter of 18 years from 1983. They grew as per the dictum of Mao – power grows out of the… Yet the devastation of morale after Katunayake was never used to advantage in negotiating a deal. From the Ceasefire of 2002, firepower lost its relevance. From 2009, it ceased to exist.
When the ground equation changes, strategies have to be trimmed appropriately. But never have we thought of this option. Sulking from our camp was considered a good proposition. We reduced our weight to less than a third through indifference and inertia resulting in a partial boycott. Such action in 2010 has come home to roost in 2015. JHU and TNA weigh in equal measure. The late Hon. S. Thondaman has told me on a few occasions, TULF does not become important on its own self-assessment. It has to make its importance felt in the eyes of the decision maker. To illustrate this point he applied it to Athulathmudali and his discomfiture. He was an important member of the government, but he did not make his importance felt.
If the voting pattern of the Tamils keeps to the same level as other communities, then it will approximate five (5) times the size of 2010 voting. What a difference it will make! What great influence it will wield in political bargains. But instead of making that significance felt, we only prate that we are king makers. If a 1.2 million plus of our votes can go en bloc to a single candidate, and it makes a difference to the outcome, then the winner carries with him a moral obligation to reward those who made that difference. This is the substance of politics. Tamils and Tamils alone stand in that privileged and enviable position for the last time in January 2015.
It is the Tamils who have incurred the very worst from the incumbent regime for over nine years. The TNA is mandated politically to educate the Tamil Electorate accordingly, to make this difference and to create history. This is the last chance for a vote to a President to abolish the system and only the correct vote can achieve it. No effort is needed to convert the people to vote for the common candidate. They are fully converted already. Their made up mind need not be spoilt with talk of detraction. They have only to be activated to go to the booth and to cast their vote with the benefits made quite apparent.
The TNA party machinery certainly has to do its publicity and propaganda work, strongly effective in the North, effective in the East and in a subdued tone elsewhere. It will be a way of converting times of tribulation into a pursuit of much worth.

Speech of Dr. Bahu at Matara relly for Maithree

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News -05.Dec.2014, 1.30PM) Let me explain two points. First point, recently I spoke to a higher official in a ministry for his attention on a welfare matter. Before I could speak he asked me whether we are planning to defeat Mara with Maithree. Impulsively I said that in Buddhist terms to defeat Mara one needs Maithree, Karuna, Muditha and Upeksha. He laughed and retorted that what he meant was the defeat of MR and Maithree is enough for that purpose. What this incident shows is that even higher state officials are changing their loyalty and turning to the opposition.

Secondly, President Mahinda continuously raises the issue of western imperialist conspiracy behind the common candidate of the opposition. He says that a western imperialist conspiracy has been launched against his regime. It is not clear to me whether he is saying this intentionally or due to fool hardiness. But there is an iota of truth in this statement. The speech made before me by reverent Rathana Sadu is very relevant to this subject. Sadu explained that both fertilizers and pesticides, used by peasants are full of poisonous chemicals, illegal in western countries but distributed here by MNCs. It is necessary to investigate carefully the dangers involved. After getting all facts and figures when they tried to stop the distribution of poisonous chemicals there was an enormous difficulty. President Mahinda not only avoided taking action against the identified MNCs, but also intervened to protect them. This shows that the top has gained benefits from these companies and helped them to continue. The same problem was faced by minister Maithree when he wanted to take actions against tobacco and drug companies. When these companies were taking actions, undermining the decisions of the parliament, the relevant documents suddenly disappeared from all cupboards. It is a simple mater for MNCs to do such a thing if there is small space created at the top by the executive president.

In the present world of neo liberalism, imperialist actions are not necessarily carried out by the White House or the Pentagon. Imperialist super exploitation is carried out by the MNCs system supervised by the IMF, WB, and WTO, trinity. It is a great chance that the minister Maithree, who clashed with the tobacco and drug companies, while he was a partner of a cabinet of an executive president who betrayed the country to the MNCs for bribes and benefits, escaped only with the loss of documents. It is a deadly venture to fight with multinational companies while serving as a cabinet minister under a leader who is traitor to the country. We all should be happy that Maithree was able to come to us safely. It should be clear to the people of this country, who are the traitors that sacrifice the resources and the people of this country to the imperialist masters. We must all get together to chase out Mahinda Rajapaksa the traitor to the country and the people. In the coming January 8th all patriotic people should vote for Maithree and chase away the pro imperialist traitor Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Sri Lanka’s Next Step

President Mahinda Rajapaksa may come to regret calling a snap election.

Dec. 4, 2014

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa called a snap election two weeks ago, giving voters until January to decide whether to grant him an unprecedented third term. Despite his achievements, Sri Lankans may decide they need a different kind of leadership.

When Mr. Rajapaksa came to power in 2005, Sri Lanka was locked in a decades-long civil war. He succeeded in defeating the separatist Tamil Tigers in 2009, and that triumph guaranteed him a huge margin of victory when he ran again in 2010.
Yet Mr. Rajapaksa’s second term saw a rise in alleged abuses of power. Just weeks after the election, the authorities jailed the losing candidate—a leading general in the struggle against the Tamil Tigers. The government curtailed press freedom and locked up reporters. It also took legal action against the opposition and critics.
Mr. Rajapaksa also appointed two of his brothers to head major governmental ministries and two cousins to serve as ambassadors to Russia and the U.S. Another brother is Speaker of Parliament. The President says he did nothing wrong, yet this concentration of power has turned many Sri Lankans against the family.
Mr. Rajapaksa’s party saw its share of the vote plunge in by-elections and provincial elections earlier this year. Despite his loss of popularity, Mr. Rajapaksa evidently believed he stood a better chance of another six-year term if he held elections early rather than two years down the road.
But his calculation is already going awry. The day after the election announcement, Health Minister Mithripala Sirisena quit the cabinet and announced his candidacy. This move is even more surprising because Mr. Sirisena was No. 2 in the president’s party. His sudden alliance with the opposition led to a flurry of lesser defections.
Mr. Sirisena promises major political reforms if elected. Noting that Sri Lanka was “moving towards a dictatorship” under Mr. Rajapaksa, Mr. Sirisena wants to abolish the Presidency. He also plans to restore the judiciary’s independence.
Mr. Rajapaksa isn’t making such bold campaign pledges. He has already overseen an economic renaissance and promises more of the same. With 7.3% growth last year and a burgeoning tourism industry, many citizens have benefited from his tenure.
But the campaign period may expose Sri Lanka’s darker side. Election-related violence has begun, including five non-fatal shootings. There are also allegations of government employees postering for Mr. Rajapaksa, which is illegal under Sri Lankan law.
Sri Lanka has yet to heal from a civil war that cost more than 80,000 lives. Mr. Rajapaksa deserves credit for winning the war and jump-starting the economy, but he also must shoulder the blame for riding roughshod over the country’s democratic institutions. If he does win another term, the President will have to do considerably more to secure the peace.

Whoever Becomes President, It’s The Same For The Tamils!

Since the call for the Presidential election in Sri Lanka, we have seen statements, press releases and opinions from various quarters. So far, not a single Sinhala politician has made a call or a positive statement about finding a political solution to the problems underpinning the six decades of bloody conflict in Sri Lanka.
Mahinda MaithriOn the contrary, from both sides, the government and the opposition, there have been many verbal statements voicing the fact that they are not bothered about the Tamil’s leading political party – Tamil National Alliance –TNA or the Tamil votes.
It seems ridiculous when we see statements made by so-called Tamil diaspora leaders. What have they got to do with the Presidential election in Sri Lanka? Do they have a vote? Not even the Tamils in the ground who live with various difficulties seek out the opinion of these individuals.
Some among the diaspora demand a boycott of the elections; others say not to vote in the election and yet another funny group says ‘not to boycott the Presidential election like what happened in 2005’! The diaspora members who make public their opinion on the Presidential election are not even capable of lobbying their own government regarding a political solution in Sri Lanka.                Read More

Open Letter To EC & IGP; Give Every Voter A Security Detail

Colombo Telegraph
By Kusal Perera -December 5, 2014
Kusal Perara
Kusal Perara
A news report in the English print media today (04/12/2014) said, defected government MP and former deputy minister Duminda Dissanayake’s 20 member security detail had all been transferred out to rural police stations. Seriously, this number is unimaginably a XXL number for any politician now. This also means, well over 100 such ministers, deputy ministers and “Kangani” MPs attached to ministries are running about with such or even heavier security details, some not just with armed police, but with special military squads too. It is a legal fact, transfer of public servants after an election is declared officially, amounts to a clear violation of law. Yet it happened before, especially in the police department and would happen again. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) remains directly answerable for all such violations and so should the Elections Commissioner (EC). He of course would say, the law does not give him enough teeth to bite the issue whole.
IGP PoliceAdded to the issue of violating law during elections, there are two other politically important issues, the two top officials cannot avoid by saying, “We are independent. Can’t answer political issues”. They cannot dodge these issues as they emerge out of their disregard and negligence in holding on to law as independent public officials. Their disregard in allowing the regime to violate the law for political and personal gains.
First comes the issue and more relevant and directed to the IGP which is, “What threat do these politicians have now, to go about with large contingents of security men?” Armed security for politicians was accepted without questions when the LTTE was targeting politicians, especially key ministers. With the war declared over and the LTTE crushed and wiped out, all barricades and check-points on roads were regarded a hindrance and removed. Absence of the LTTE threat in day to day life thus demands the absence of armed security in public life. Why should these ministers and parliamentarians go about with armed escorts now? Is it not the responsibility of the IGP to raise the issue of men with arms, now in public life? Is it not the responsibility of the EC to tell the Minister of Defense (irony is, the minister is not only the President, but the presidential candidate too) to at least remove armed security men from politicians, from the day of nominations ?Read More

Polls Chief, Police Face Moment of Truth

Sri Lanka Brief[Photo: Amila Gamage/FB]
Editorial, Daily Mirror-04/12/2014
For the past few years and during recent elections, the plunder or abuse of the people’s money, resources and public servants for political party propaganda work has reached criminal proportions. In addition to this plunder, there are also allegations of cyber crime or computer ‘jilmart’ to manipulate the results.
The early presidential election is turning out to be a crucial stage in Sri Lanka’s history. Until November 21, most analysts believed President Mahinda Rajapaksa was unbeatable and his family political fortress invincible. But the dramatic crossover of former Health Minister and the ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party’s General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena has turned the tide to such an extent that most independent political analysts believe that the results of the January 8 elections would be too close to call.
A weekend newspaper report of an opinion poll giving the Opposition’s common candidate Mr. Sirisena a 59% to 41% lead over Mr. Rajapaksa is being denied by the Government.
Whatever the outcome, Sri Lanka’s sovereign people must be ensured of their fundamental right to a free, fair and peaceful election so that they could make an informed choice. Events and signs up to now indicate the sovereign people are being denied that right.
Our sister newspaper the Sunday Times in a front-page lead story quoted trade union officials as saying more than 1,000 Colombo port workers, along with heavy equipment including cranes had been moved out to various parts of the country for the ruling party’s election propaganda work.
The port unions said this move had seriously hampered work, forcing the authorities to hire workers from a private engineering firm.
The officials of the United National Party-controlled Jathika Sevaka Sangamaya said they had made an official complaint with documentary evidence giving the names of the port employees, including maintenance men and welding technicians, who had been sent out for election propaganda work. Predictably, Ports Authority Chairman Priyath Bandu Wickrama denied the charges, while the Ports Ministry Secretary Ranjith Premasiri said he was unaware of what was happening, and would check with the authorities.
Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya – who had earlier said his hands were tied but now appears to be acting independently to ensure a free and fair poll – warned that action could and would be taken against ministry secretaries and departmental heads who allowed the misuse of public money or resources and public servants for party political propaganda. In another positive and public-spirited move, Sri Lanka’s premier legal body the Bar Association of Sri Lanka decided to give free legal aid to civic rights groups or individuals who filed action against the misuse of public money, property and public servants for party propaganda work. BASL President Upul Jayasuriya said this decision was taken in view of the growing number of such gross violations of election laws and the plunder of public funds for party work. He said the BASL itself would file action against top officials who allowed such abuse. At a time when a death blow has been dealt to the independence of the judiciary – one of the pillars of democracy – the saving grace is that the BASL is acting pro-actively on behalf of the people and their fundamental right to free and fair elections.
The Sunday Times also reported that a special Police unit under a DIG was being set up at the Elections Secretariat to act in co-operation with the Elections Commissioner when complaints are made of violations of election laws and violence. This unit has been set up on a request made by the Elections Commissioner and it would be a boost for democracy if, as done in India, the Police unit is brought under the Elections Commissioner for the period of the campaign. Police Chief N.K. Illangakoon has been acting independently, especially in the case of Police transfers and we hope he would continue to do so in the polls campaign and thereby restore a people-friendly Police service.
Another major area where there is widespread abuse of public funds and resources is the Government media — print, television and radio. This abuse has gone on for decades, but in the past few years public money and resources have been blatantly abused to flatter a demi-god. In the coming weeks, with a sense of desperation also creeping in, the Government media are likely to blatantly violate election laws and principles of journalism. Under election laws, the State media are required to give equal coverage to major parties during an election campaign. If that is not done, we hope the Elections Commissioner will take action against them.

NPC member dashes Mace

By Ananth Palakidnar
 2014-12-05
Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Provincial Councillor, M.K. Sivajilingam, had thrown the mace of the Council and demanded that a motion brought by him six months ago, calling the alleged war crimes a genocide, should be passed by the Council at the NPC's 20th sitting yesterday.
Sivajilingam became violent when he was told
by Council Chairman C. V. K. Sivagnanam that his motion would be taken for voting in January next year.
However, Sivajilingam was adamant that the motion should be passed by the NPC without any further delay. The motion was brought before the NPC six months ago by Sivajilingam.
The TNA hierarchy requested the NPC not to take any immediate decision on the issue as it has been discussed between the TNA leadership and the UNHRC in Geneva.
Following the request made by the TNA hierarchy, the NPC shelved the motion brought by Sivajilingam. However, when Sivajilingam took up the issue yesterday, Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran told Sivajilingam to make his motion a complete one.
Following the suggestion made by the Chief Minister, the Chairman of the NPC announced that the motion would be tabled for voting in January 2015.
But the irritate Councillor lifted the mace, placed before the Chairman's seat, and dashed it on the ground while shouting that the NPC was reluctant to take firm decisions with regard to Tamil political issues.
Later, the officials of the NPC pacified the Councillor and placed the mace back in its original place.

I only have “files” given by Ministers – President

I only have “files” given by Ministers – President logo  December 5, 2014
Confident that he will emerge victorious at the forthcoming Presidential Election, Mahinda Rajapaksa says that his third term as the President of Sri Lanka will commence after being sworn in on November 19, 2015.
The President made this declaration in response to a question during a meeting with news heads of print and electronic media at Temple Trees this morning.
Rajapaksa further stated that in reality he is contesting this Presidential Election against the Chandrika-Mangala alliance and not another candidate. He stated that Opposition Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe is also in the side.
He claimed that Common Opposition Candidate Maithripala Sirisena is not someone to be that concerned about and that UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe would have posed a better challenge if he contested the election, as he possesses a strong voter base.
Rajapaksa charged that former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, who is supporting the Common Candidate in the election, had engaged in “hateful politics” in 2005 as well as in 2010, and that however, he will never engage in such hateful politics.
Asked about a recent statement made by him that he has “files” on MPs and Ministers who defected from the government, the President clarified that he only possess files which were given to him by ministers.
Rajapaksa said that ministers normally forward him files of their respective ministries and that when he spoke about this in public, various persons have given it various interpretations.

Here’s another election result..

15,000 for illegal election campaigning

lankaturthFRIDAY, 05 DECEMBER 2014
It is revealed that 15,000 employees are being recruited to various institutions violating election laws to engage in Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa’s election campaign from the 15th. This is an attempt to revitalize already broken down propaganda machinery of Mr. Rajapaksa say reports.
It has been planned to influence people through these new employees to vote for Mr. Rajapaksa. They are being persuaded to work tirelessly for the victory of Mr. Rajapaksa saying they would lose their employment otherwise.
People are recruited in large numbers to institutions such as Ceylon Electricity Board, National Water Supply and Drainage Board, Central Environmental Authority, the Ministry of Labour, the Ministry of Sports, Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation and the Ministry of Construction, Engineering Services, Housing & Common Amenities.
