Sierra Leone physician who treated Martin Salia is diagnosed with Ebola

Washington Post November 27 at 7:05 AM
The doctor who treated Martin Salia, the Sierra Leonean physican who died of Ebola last week after being transported to Omaha, has contracted the disease himself.
Komba Songu M’Briwa cared for Salia, his colleague and former professor, at Freetown’s Hastings Ebola Treatment Center before Salia was transported to the United States.
After Salia’s initial Ebola test came back negative, M’Briwa said employees “were celebrating” by embracing him. Salia’s subsequent test came back positive, meaning they had been unknowingly been exposed to the virus.
It’s unclear whether that was how M’Briwa contracted Ebola.
M’Briwa is the ninth Sierra Leonean doctor to be diagnosed with the disease. He was a top physician at Hastings, one of the country’s largest Ebola treatment centers, with 120 beds.
Reached by phone, his mother-in-law, Theresa, said the family wasn’t sure how M’Briwa had contacted the disease. She described his condition as stable. He is now at Hastings as a patient.
“We’re worried because he was living with his small children and his wife,” said Theresa, who declined to give her last name. “We’re all tormented.”
The positive results were delivered yesterday, but M’Briwa had been symptomatic for several days, she said.
M’Briwa has a five-year-old son and a three-year-old daughter.
In an interview with the Post earlier this month, he expressed frustration at Salia’s first negative test, which he said might have endangered his colleagues, who then assumed it was safe to touch him.
“If the test says you are Ebola-free, we assume you are Ebola-free,” he said.
In many cases, a negative test at that stage means nothing because “there aren’t enough copies of the virus in the blood for the test to pick up,” said Ermias Belay, the head of the CDC’s Ebola response team in Sierra Leone.
The World Health Organization reported this week that there were 1,339 Ebola cases reported in the 21 days prior to November 23rd in Sierra Leone.

Kevin Sieff has been The Post’s bureau chief in Nairobi since 2014. He served previously as the bureau chief in Kabul and had covered the U.S. -Mexico border.

BBS Cries Sour Grapes! – Pledges Support To Mahinda After Maithri Ignores Them

Colombo Telegraph
November 27, 2014
After their plan to sabotage the election campaign of the Common candidate by joining the common opposition movement failed, Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) organisation today pledged their support to Mahinda Rajapaksa and said they would use their maximum strength to ensure the defeat of Maithripala Sirisena.
Gnanasara

Their stance was officially announced today during a media breifig as promised earlier during the week, where they pledged their support to Mahinda Rajapaksa. BBS General Secretary Galagoda Atte Gnanasaraspeaking at the media breifing said they will not be joining the UPFA but would conduct a seperate campaign in support of Mahinda Rajapaksa.
He said they would travel around the country to ensure Mahinda’s victory since they believe hs is a ‘national leader’. During the breifing he also invited Maithripala to return to the government and criticized those who have pledged their support to the common opposition movement, stating they have fallen prey to an international conspiracy.
Although they were planning to pledge their support to common candidate Maithripala Sirisena’s campaign upon instructions given by the regime, their plan fell through when Maithripala refused to engage in discussions with the organisation.
Their plan to support Maithripala was exposed by Colombo Telegraph and several other media and reliable sources close to Basil Rajapaksa said the plan was to get the BBS to support Maithripala in order to mislead the minority voters.

Special Rapporteur on minority issues, Ms Rita Izsák 25 November 2014
The United Nations Special Rapporteur on minority issues Rita Izsak criticised Sri Lankan Buddhist organisation Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) in a report released ahead of the seventh session of the Forum on Minority Issues, which is currently underway in Geneva.
In the report, the Special Rapporteur stated that she considers “violence against minorities must constitute a high priority for States, regional bodies and the international community, as well as civil society”.
She went on to note that on 2 July 2014 the Special Rapporteur “along with other United Nations experts, called on Sri Lanka to adopt urgent measures to stop the racial and faith-based hatred and violence directed at Muslim and Christian communities by Buddhist groups with extremist views, and to bring perpetrators to justice”.
Acknowledging the violence that has occurred on the island this year, the Special Rapporteur said,

“A group known as Bodu Bala Sena (Buddhist Power Force), along with other groups, is promoting extremist views, proclaiming the racial superiority of Sinhala Buddhists and spreading fear among the population by, for example, alleging that statues of Buddha are being bulldozed by religious minorities or that evangelical Christians are forcibly converting vulnerable people. These statements have fuelled tensions and contributed to more than 350 violent attacks against Muslims and over 150 attacks against Christians in the past two years.”
Commenting further on Sri Lanka and the failure of the international community to respond to reports of mass atrocities, the Special Rapporteur said “the United Nations development and humanitarian branches were unable to fully address the United Nations political and human rights priorities.”
“Failures identified included a United Nations system that lacked an adequate and shared sense of responsibility for human rights violations; an incoherent internal United Nations crisis-management structure which failed to conceive and execute a coherent strategy in response to early warnings and subsequent human rights and humanitarian law violations against civilians; the ineffective dispersal of United Nations Headquarters structures to coordinate United Nations action and to address international human rights and humanitarian law violations across several different United Nations Headquarters entities in Geneva and New York; a model for United Nations action in the field that was designed for a development rather than a conflict response; and inadequate political support from Member States as a whole.”
The report also added that, “in conflicts in Afghanistan, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Guatemala, Iraq, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Somalia, Sri Lanka and the Sudan, minority women have suffered systematic sexual and other violence.”See the full report here.

SL military deployed everywhere, Jaffna University shut down

TamilNet[TamilNet, Wednesday, 26 November 2014, 07:59 GMT]
The occupying military of genocidal Sri Lanka has deployed armoured vehicles at the entrance to the University of Jaffna since Tuesday evening when the university administration was forced to announce that the university has been shut down from 25th of November till 01st of December. The US-trained commander of the SL military in Jaffna, Major General Udaya Perera was insistent on closing down the university during the Tamil Eelam Heroes Day, informed sources said. Students were forced to abstain from attending the classes following the harassments caused by the SL military deployment. Finally, the SL military instructed the university administration to shut down the education activities citing low attendance of the students at the faculties of Arts and Science.
SL military deployment in Jaffna
SL military deployment in JaffnaSL military personnel present at the entrance with armoured vehicles have not been allowing anyone except the security guards to enter the university since Tuesday evening.

Most of the students at the hostels have been asked to leave. Already, students from districts outside Jaffna had left the hostel following the harassment by the SL military.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, S. Thaceenthan, the president of the Jaffna University Student Union (JUSU) and S. Sayanthan, the secretary of the JUSU, have condemned the military deployment and the shut down of the Jaffna University.

Amidst the prevailing harassments, the students had put up posters paying their tribute to Tamil Heroes inside the university premises last week.
SL military deployment in Jaffna

On Wednesday, SL soldiers were deployed in large numbers on the streets of Jaffna. The military has also stepped up its patrol and presence at the temples, schools and key junctions disturbing the normalcy.

Sinhala soldiers were harassing bakery-owners in Jaffna asking them to inform if anyone were ordering cakes on the occasion of LTTE leader Pirapaharan’s 60th birthday on Wednesday.

At Valveddith-thu’rai, SL military was deployed at the site where Mr Pirapaharan’s house was situated earlier. The house was completely demolished by the SL military in August 2011.

At Nedun-theevu, SL military was removing Kaarthikaip-poo flowers, which were placed at several locations on Tuesday. The LTTE had declared Kaarthikaip-poo (Gloriosa Lily) as Tamil Eelam National Flower in 2004.

In the meantime, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian S. Sritharan from Ki’linochchi has condemned the SL military for harassments against Tamils remembering thousands of their heroes who had laid down their lives.

Sritharan was reacting to Sri Lankan Senior Police Superintendent W.P. Wimalasena, who said at a press conference in Jaffna on Tuesday that there was no such day as “Tamil Eelam Heroes Day”. Mr Wimalasena openly claimed that the SL police would act against anyone who attempted to mark Tamil Heroes Day.
SL intelligence launches investigation into Uthayan over LTTE leader 60th birthday article
26 November 2014
Sri Lankan intelligence officers are to launch an investigation into the Uthayan, alleging that the newspaper had celebrated LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran's birthday, reportsBBC Sinhala.

The investigation was launched after the Jaffna based daily published an article which included a photograph of a billboard in India, which featured Prabhakaran's image and the words:
"60th birthday of the leader of the Tamils. The auspicious day the god of our nation was incarnated.”

Also appearing on the billboard were images of Argentine guerilla leader Che Guevara and Indian social reformer B R Ambedkar.

The Jaffna-based newspaper has faced constant threats from the Sri Lankan security forces, with journalists and staff members frequently assaulted and assassinated. Uthayan offices in the North-East of the island have also come under attack and been vandalised several times.

Last year, the newspaper was awarded the Reporters Without Borders  “2013 Press Freedom Prize”.

British Prime Minister David Cameron also visited the Uthayan offices in 2013, telling staff that he was “proud to meet the brave journalists risking their lives”, and that the visit “is going to make a very lasting impression.”

BBS woos Maithri :Gota conspiracy to antagonize minorities against common opposition

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News -26.Nov.2014, 9.00PM) The Bodhu Bala Sena (BBS) Organization recognized as an extremist robed group condemned internationally as a terrorist organization , but locally is a paramilitary group under the criminal defense secretary of Sri Lanka , Gotabaya Rajapakse, has decided to announce tomorrow that it will be supporting the opposition common candidate Maithripala Sirisena at the forthcoming Presidential elections , according to reports reaching Lanka e news inside information division.
When the BBS was to convene a media briefing today to announce that it will be supporting Mahinda Rajapakse at the Presidential elections , at the last minute , the Rajapakse regime had coached BBS to announce tomorrow that they will be supporting Maithripala Sirisena.
The obvious reason for this is to antagonize the minorities who have a bitter anathema towards the BBS notorious as an extremist terror organization . This is a ploy adopted by Rajapakse to cause the opposition common candidate to lose the votes of the minorities who are all enthusiastically aligned behind Maithripala Sirisena now, and specially to disrupt the moves of the Muslim Congress representing the Muslims to support common opposition alliance with whom they are having discussions right now.
As part of this conspiracy the state media most infamously famous for its insidious propaganda programs , splashed the news yesterday that discussions are going to be held between BBS and Maithripala . When Lanka e news probed into this it was discovered there is absolutely nothing like that happening tomorrow or any other day, and that neither Maithripala nor his common opposition alliance is aware of such a discussion. This is therefore another newspaper canard created by Rajapakse and his sordid media coolies.
Meanwhile a spokesman for the common opposition speaking to Lanka e news revealed , they are certainly not in need of the support of an extremist internationally condemned terrorist organization of drunkard monks of disrepute under any circumstance , while adding that , already the common opposition parties are having the fullest and true Buddhist support of a large number of most reputed Buddhist organizations and dignitaries including Mahanayakes , Ven. Malwatte and Asgiriya chapters of the three Nikayas , Ven. Madhuluwawe Sobitha Thera , Ven. Athureliya Rathane Thera, Ven. Girambe Ananda Thera , as well as true adherents of Lord Buddha’s noble teachings.

Sri Lanka: Editors of Censored CP Newspaper Launch New Left Paper

VOA32312 (2)
[Sri Lanka media landscape is dominated by pro establishment mainstream press]
Sri Lanka Brief26/11/2014
Since the Communist party of Sri Lanka has blocked the distribution of newspaper Aththa (Truth) due to its critical content, the former editors of Aththa newspaper (3rd July 2013 to 9th November 2014) have decided to launch a new news paper. SLB publish the English translation of the editorial of the Aththa dated 3rd July 2013 in order  to be informed of the purpose of the new paper. You can also visit  www.aththa.lk  to read the past issues of Aththa edited by former editorial staff.
The Translation of the new Äththa:
The Äththa newspaper launched in December 1964 revolutionized the newspaper industry in Sri Lanka for decades will come to you again.
Though Aththa was launched as a communist paper in the beginning, soon after its entry into the Sri Lankan political arena Äththa became a common platform for the progressive and democratic forces of the country
Today in our society there has arisen a need to understand what actually is happening in the country concerning many things. If we look at some examples: even though it is reported that there is a rapid economic development which has taken place in this country in the last couple of years, is this economy headed in the correct direction? If it is headed in the wrong direction what are its alternatives? What is the reason behind for the majority of the people to lead very harsh lives confronting drastic economic conditions and hardships? Why is the Gap between the rich and the poor increasing daily? Why isn’t there proper peaceful reconciliation despite the fact that the 30-year war had come to an end military vise? Instead of peace on what basis are the repressive fronts’ against religions and ethnic groups taking place? How come the law in Sri Lanka is in a limbo with the breakdown of the independence of the judiciary? How is it that the ways of the underworld is ruling in every inch of the state structure? Why do we feel that militarism is spreading to all aspects of society? And how has it become impossible for the general public to fulfill their basic needs without turning towards corruption and political patronage as means of obtaining their basic needs?
On other hand compared with other developing nations why is the labour productivity low in Sri Lanka? In short what are the reasons behind the degrading of discipline in the political and social spheres? How has Sri Lanka which was once considered an inspiration for upholding a humane society become a land internationally defamed for violating the rights of the disabled, women and children and to be considered an inhuman country.
Under such problematic circumstances the only pre-condition to understand what the truth really is, is to solve those issues. Nevertheless, today it has become an impossible task for people living in Sri Lanka to seek truth or to reveal the truth.
In this context there are a few journalists and media personnel who write fiercely with courage and persistence. We respect them and in this re-launching edition of the Äththa newspaper we wish those courageous journalist on their efforts and wish them more strength for their cause and action. At the same time we also wish they will contribute to Äththa’s struggle.
There are intelligent people in this society representing all classes and strata who have understood the challenges Sri Lanka is facing at present; repression of democracy and the democratic institutions, the intentional disregard to the rule of Law, collapse of the independence of the judiciary, the expansion of social injustices and challenges for ethnic, racial and religious harmony. Some of these intelligent people do come forward at instances against such repressive statuses when tense situations occur. Nevertheless most often, those struggles disappear with the cooling down of those tense situations either with temporary victories or defeats. However it fails to initiate a debate that would comprehensively look into solving these issues with a long lasting solution.
The debate that arose with the impeachment of the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka is a good example for this. There are debates taking place rising at times passively or at times strongly on the undermining of the independence of judiciary, making a mockery out of the rule of law and against the collapsing of the whole democratic political system of the country.
These days it seems as if forces against ethnic harmony and against ethnic and religious reconciliations are coming together. These are directed not only at hurdling the formation of a new means to obtain ethnic and religious justice but also in seizing rights which are guaranteed by the constitution. The police and land powers of the Provincial Council (PC) system is being used in context to fear the general public. There is a force rising and establishing against such strategies which has mainly sprung from the intelligent people of this polity.
So under such circumstances the need for a newspaper such as Aththa being crucial is unquestionable.
Äththa has no personal foes or friends. It is indomitable but not unbiased. It is biased towards democracy. Äththa is against dictatorship, authoritarianism, nepotism and corruption. If there is anything to be done to eradicate prejudice, misconception and to ensure pragmatism Äththa will definitely take it up and implement on it. One of the fundamental tasks of Äththa in a time when internal democracy is collapsing within prominent political parties and where authoritarian organizations are gradually rising in influence, is to contribute our utmost to address on the dire need of establishing a broad collation among the leftist forces of the country. Äththa will lobby as an open forum for the creation of a debate in order for the creation of such a united force.
Even before this newspaper was re-launched there was speculation in the society concerning Aththa. Many people asked whether it is true that the Aththa newspaper is going to be published again: “ Is it to blindly support (be a means of sucking up to) the government?” others questioned sarcastically. So here we would state that the Äththa newspaper would only support the public and work towards ethnic reconciliation and democracy: This is the answer we give to those speculators.
Australian senator remembers Tamils killed by systematic Sri Lankan state brutality

Mahinda Rajapaksa vs. The Rest

  • Saturn has made its mischief and the January presidential contest now looks poised to become a hard-fought battle
November 27, 2014
President Mahinda Rajapaksa smiles while attending the 18th SAARC Summit-
It all began with the stars. It was apt therefore that less than 24 hours after President Mahinda Rajapaksa declared he would be seeking a third term in office two years ahead of schedule, certain celestial bodies began to wreak all manner of mischief inside his ruling party.
Believers in astrology put last week’s political dramas down to the influence of the planet Saturn, the ‘Great Malefic’ of the astrological firmament. There was a major movement of the planet on 2 November 2014, which astrologers say could result in sudden deaths, bad luck and punishing circumstances. The planet is known to be the great obstructer, moving slowly during transition, slowing momentum and making courage falter in the physical realm. Saturn is the punishing father, the grim reaper and the consummate mischief-maker, creator of controversy and abrupt change in the mortal realm.

(November 26, 2014, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) The Floating Market is one of a kind. A brainchild of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, it was built by the UDA at a cost of Rs.100 million. Its row of shops-on-boats looks rather quaint from afar. Closer encounters, reportedly, are not so pleasing. The shops have no proper walls or doors. Instead they have loosely woven coir-covers which provide no impediment to inclement elements or robbers. Every night the shop-owners face a Hobson’s choice: do they carry their merchandise home with them or do they sleep in the shops to protect their merchandise?

Video: India’s World On Sri Lanka’s Presidential Poll

Colombo Telegraph
November 26, 2014
During a political discussion that was hosted yesterday on Rajya Sabha TV – an Indian cable TV network run by the Indian government, experts on political and international relations have pointed out that that reasons that drove President Rajapaksa to hold the Presidential polls two years ahead of schedule would have been a combination that includes the erosion of the political coalition he built to come into power, to remain better protected from international pressures and to avoid running the risk of losing the elections two years later. It was pointed out by the experts however that the polls would hardly provide concrete solutions to any of the issues he seeks to find remedies for.
The program was attended by Professor SD Muni – an academic and an expert on South Asia, Professor Kanwal Sibal who was India’s former foreign secretary and Srinivas Ramani – the senior assistant editor of Economic and Political Weekly.

He made this remarks in his Facebook page today. A visibly irked President Mahinda Rajapaksa, also on November 24th said that he is in possession of ‘files’ on all those who defected from the government last Friday in support of former Minister Maithripala Sirisena‘s candidacy as the common candidate at the upcoming presidential polls.

Chandrika Kumaratunga, Ranil Wickremesinghe, Maithripala Sirisena
Daily News Online : Sri Lanka's National NewsThe politics of Maithripala Sirisena is bizarre, to say the least. He leaves the Rajapaksa regime because he was not given the premiership and his answer to his own problem is to abolish the presidency and appoint Ranil Wickremesinghe as the Prime Minister, empowered with executive powers of the presidency.

Attempt through CID to silence Hakeem!

rouf exA plan is underway to keep SLMC leader, justice minister Rauff Hakeem in the government by silencing him through the CID, internal sources at the department told ‘Lanka News Web.’
Investigations are to be launched into three files existing against minister Hakeem. Sergeant Bandara, under the supervision of chief inspector Indunil, has been appointed for the purpose.
One file relates to his breaching of financial and administrative regulations by purchasing a tug from a Muslim businessman without following tender procedures when he was the minister of ports and shipping. Another deals with the state sector jobs given by obtaining money through his coordinating officer Hassen Faiz, while the third is about pushing, not preventing, his paramour Kumari Cooray to commit suicide.
The CID has already made submissions to courts regarding Kumari’s suicide. Some time ago, the CID submitted to courts that her deathbed confession made no mention of Hakeem. Two Rupavahini Corporation cameramen who had videoed her suicide had given the two CDs to the CID. Since these alone are inadequate to file charges against Hakeem, the case has been categorized as C3. However, in order to frighten him, the case has been reopened.
Chandra Fernando, former IGP, who is presently director-general of the defence ministry’s internal and special investigation unit, yesterday (25) afternoon took these three files into his custody. Minister Hakeem was summoned on the same day to the CID to record a statement, but he didn't make an appearance. CID officers are awaiting DG Fernando’s instructions on how they should deal with this case, the CID sources told ‘LNW’ further.

Embattled Rajapakse regime petering out :3 more cross overs – new chief minister Daya Gamage ?

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News- 26.Nov.2014, 7.00PM) The meteoric rise in unpopularity of the currently embattled Rajapakse regime was further confirmed when three members of the All Ceylon Muslim Congress (a constituent party of the UPFA) of Minister Rishad Badurdeen, of the provincial council of the east where the ruling party holds power also decided to quit the government and become independent members . It is noteworthy that they contested under the betel leaf symbol of the UPFA.
The three provincial councilors are : M.S. Zobair, Shibly and Ameer Ali Shihabdeen of Batticaloa district.. The SLFP has 5 members , along with them the ruling party has 22 seats in the council which include the parties forming the ruling alliance. The opposition had 15 seats , but with the exit of these three members ,the ruling party will have 19 seats, and the opposition 18 seats ,and the chief minister of the PC east is Majeed Najeeb .
Consequently ,the chief minister Najeeb’s post is in peril , and already discussions are on by the opposition to capture the ruling power of the council , and to appoint a new chief minister . Among the names proposed for the chief minister post is UNP national organizer Daya Dharmapala Kilittuwa Gamage alias Daya Gamage.
