Gendered Genocide: Sri Lanka’s War Against Tamils
Tasha Manoranjan Tamil Guardian 17 November 2014

The following address was delivered by Tasha Manoranjan, a graduate from Yale Law School, and founder and director of People for Equality and Relief in Lanka (PEARL), at the ’Feminisms, Structural Violence and Transitional Justice Conference’ held at York University, Toronto last month.
"Tamil women have suffered disproportionately throughout Sri Lanka’s decades-long ethnic conflict. They have faced both the structural collapse of communities as well as the erosion of societal norms. In response, an increasing number of women joined the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) starting in the 1980s and throughout the years prior to 2009, and became an integral part of the armed resistance against the government.

SL High Commissioner In Australia Tries To Block The Book “Sri Lanka’s Secrets”

November 17, 2014
Colombo Telegraph
The Sri Lankan High Commission in Australia has been busy attempting to compel the University of Monash to withdraw its publishing support for a new book that sheds lights on events that occurred during the final phases of the war in Sri Lanka.
cover-printAccording to the Tamil Refugee Council, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner AdmiralThisara Samarasinghe had met with the university administration and its Vice-Chancellor on two occasions – September 8 and 26 in an attempt to get the university to withdraw their support for the book titled ‘Sri Lanka’s Secrets: How the Rajapaksa regime gets away with murder’ authored by veteran Australian journalist Trevor Grant.
Monash University Publisher Dr. Nathan Hollier has confirmed these meetings, adding that Samarasinghe even met with University Vice Chancellor Professor Magaret Gardner during which he had questioned the university’s selection approval processes for books chosen to be published.  It is reported that he had even asked for an official apology from the University for allowing the book to be published.
Prior to the meetings however, the Deputy VC of the University Professor Abid Khan had written to Samarasinghe, rejecting his calls for censorship, pointing out that authors are free to publish their work through the Monash University without fear from institutional discipline and had added that the book however does not represent the University’s official stance.
Samarasinghe however had been asked to write a response to the book on the university website, as it would provide a chance to shed light on any errors or misinterpretations, which he in turn had rejected.

Illegal Presidential Poll Campaigning Begins

Basil
President Mahinda Rajapaksa has appointed his brother, Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa as the campaign manager of the UPFA

November 17, 2014
Colombo TelegraphEven before the declaration of the Presidential polls, the Rajapaksa regime has kick-started their illegal campaigning activities, forcibly enrolling teachers in government schools into the Sri Lanka Freedom Party teacher union.
The enrolments have been carried out by Acting Directors and Service Advisors – who themselves are political appointees – who have been visiting schools in education zones countrywide and forcing the teachers through principals to obtain membership in the SLFP affiliated – Sri Lanka Nidahas Guru Sangamaya (SLNGS).
Aggrieved teachers have revealed that a list of teachers unwilling to obtain membership in the SLFP teacher union has been requested from each school and they have been informed that the eligibility to remain entitled to the motorcycles promised to those in the teachers service through budget 2015 would depend on their willingness to be part of the SLNGS.
Moreover, these Acting Directors and Service Advisors have also been holding meetings within schools for teachers that seeks to promote SLFP activities and the development work carried out by the government.

Norwegian Minister and Peace Facilitator Erik Solheim today rejected President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s claims that he was backing the LTTE and covertly financing the Tamil Tigers.
Erik Solheim in a Twitter message stated, “President Rajapaksa tells lies about me as election approaches. I will set the truth straight tomorrow,”
President Mahinda Rajapaksa demanded that the Norwegian government must probe the funding of the LTTE during the island’s three-decade civil war, alleging that Norway financed the ethnic Tamil militant group, addressing a political gathering in Kurunegala.
Reffering to Erik Solheim he added “This man Solheim is now planning to give evidence against us in Geneva. They gave money to the LTTE. The Norwegian government must investigate. We have evidence on how they funded the terrorists,” the President said.
The Norwegian-backed peace initiative between 2000 and 2008 was branded as a betrayal of the island by nationalist groups who opposed the LTTE.

Political Stability and Peace
( November 17, 2014, Tel Aviv, Sri Lanka Guardian) Political Stability and Peace are one of the main ingredients to attract investors, improve tourism development and prosperity of a Nation. It is undisputed that Sri Lanka is one of the most peaceful countries in the world - if not the most peaceful - in terms of the unstable and volatile nature of all the parts of the world. Middle East including Syria, Iraq is infested with “ISIS” and war among Clans and Sects.

Sri Lanka, Myanmar And The Buddhist Radical Groups: New Alignments?

Colombo Telegraph
By Roomana Hukil -November 17, 2014
Roomana Hukil
Roomana Hukil
Recently, hard-line Buddhist clerics in Myanmar and Sri Lanka stated that Buddhist associations from both countries will work together to protect Buddhism against the threat from the Muslim extremists around the globe. Last month, Myanmar’s Ashin Wirathu and Sri Lanka’s Galagodaththe Gnanasara met in Colombo to work towards “Buddhists around the globe to ally internationally.” Following this, the Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) expressed interest in seeking out to a similar partnership with India’s Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) towards securing a ‘Buddhist-Hindu peace zone in Asia’ to counter radical elements.
Are there divergences between radical Buddhist groups with respect to their attitudes and sentiments towards minorities in Sri Lanka and Myanmar? What impact do such fundamentalist collaborative ties have on the rest of the region?
To Each His Own
Reaching out to a larger international audience by means of collaborations provides impetus for radical Buddhists in both states to exhibit their Islamophobic character whilst protecting their image from being tarnished as an extremist force. Domestic compulsions such as the ends of the civil war in Sri Lanka and military rule in Myanmar created new fissures in the socio-political and economic fronts of the two states. However, despite the similarities, there are differences in social and ideological contexts as well as in political ambitions between the radical Buddhists of Sri Lanka and Myanmar.                    Read More

President’s popularity down from 54% to 47%!

rajapaksa-ecu 1An opinion survey conducted by a state department in view of the upcoming presidential election has shown that the popularity of president Mahinda Rajapaksa has declined rapidly from 54% to 47%, reports say.
The government is concerned that this 7% drop has taken place within a space of 10 days. Officials who conducted the survey say it is questionable as to why the president’s popularity suffered despite the fact that the opposition was yet to announce its common candidate. If his popularity goes down further after the common opposition candidate is placed before the public, the presidential election will be a very risky one for president Rajapaksa, they warn.

Rajapakse regime offers ‘bribes’ to halt exodus of its local body leaders : After Panadura mayor, another from Matale exits

LEN logo(Lanka-e-News -17.Nov.2014, 10.30PM) The UPFA mayor of Panadura municipal council , Nandana Gunatileke day before yesterday resigned from the party as well as his mayoral post . This was closely followed by another Rajapakse regime Matale Ambanganga Korale local body chairman Sunil Wijetileke who too decided to resign from his chairman post and his party increasing further the number of Rajapakse regime local body leaders who are abandoning their party and resigning their official posts. This is being seen by one and all as an unequivocal confirmation of the disillusionment and disgust that are raging within the rank and file of the regime.
Earlier on Wijetileke had been the chairman of the Ambatenne Korale local body on three occasions , and as its opposition leader twice. Wijetileke who said he will not join the opposition , and he is giving up politics had lashed out , ‘what the present politicos are avidly engaging in are : lining their pockets ; somehow via some illegal means or other amassing wealth ; some are selling arrack and beer illicitly; while others are bringing in heroin (kudu) and ethanol. Hence politics truly cannot be pursued.’ He made this announcement to a broadcasting channel.
Meanwhile with the exodus of the regime’s UPFA local body leaders , the regime in a desperate bid has started a bribe giving methodology to close their exodus route. That is , it has raised the emoluments of the representatives of the provincial administration.
Accordingly , the allowance of Rs. 5000.00 made hitherto to a local body member has been increased to Rs. 15000.00; that paid to a Vice chairman has been increased from Rs. 6500.00 to Rs. 20,000.00; that paid to a chairman has been increased from Rs. 10,000.00 to Rs. 25000.00
The allowances of Municipal council (MC ) representatives have been increased as follows :
MC member : from Rs. 7000.00 to Rs. 20,000.00
A deputy mayor : from Rs. 10,000.00 to Rs. 25000.00
A mayor : from Rs. 15000.00 to Rs. 30,000.00
The bottom line however cannot be forgotten by the public , that is all these payments made with a flourish for instant political gains by the government are from public funds collected ruthlessly out of tax burdens imposed on the oppressed people, and out of the sweat and toils of the exploited working masses.
As usual , a sordid minister of the government which is never in short supply of such hypocritical scoundrels had instigated pavement hawkers of Panadura to burn an effigy of Nandana Gunatileke while sarcastically thanking him for resigning from the government.
So now , with the exodus of disillusioned and disconcerted government members the continuous burning of their effigies can also be expected – the only solution the bankrupt moribund Rajapakse regime has for the burning problems of the abysmally and acutely suffering people .

Maithri’s brother leaves country!

dudly sirisenaWealthy businessman Dudley Sirisena, brother of SLFP general secretary and health minister Maithripala Sirisena, has left the country in a previously unannounced trip, say SLFP sources.

For the past one week, the Rajapaksas paid much attention to the minister and his family members, and president’s brother Basil Rajapaksa has met Dudley and got him and the president to talk to each other over his phone. At this conversation, the president invited Dudley to contest from Anuradhapura district on the UPFA ticket. Furthermore, he was promised a powerful ministry once elected.
The SLFP sources say that the Rajapaksas, led by the president, are attempting to break the close political connection between Maithripala Sirisena and the former president. The State Intelligence Service has briefed the president regarding the minister, after which the president has advised his brothers to attempt their utmost to prevent him from taking a strong political decision, say the sources.

Mervyn’s two MSD officers among six arrested over night club brawl

Mervyn’s two MSD officers among six arrested over night club brawl
November 17, 2014
logoIn a new turn of events into the night club brawl in Duplication Road, the Colombo Crime Division (CCD) today apprehended six more suspects in connection with the incident including two Ministerial Security Division (MSD) officials attached to Minister Mervyn Silva.
A senior police officer told Ada Derana that the suspects were arrested based on statements given by the foreign couple and the surveillance video camera footage at the crime scene.
The suspects will be produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court, today.
Minister Mervyn Silva’s son Malaka Silva, who has come to the spotlight yet again with the controversial assaulting incident of foreign couple, has been remanded until 18 November.
The CCD arrested Malaka on 1 November following a complaint lodged by the foreign nationals.
The incident had taken place at around 3.00 a.m. at the nightclub, when the minister’s son had allegedly harassed a foreign woman, thereby provoking her partner who had then attempted to assault Malaka.
However, in response Malaka Silva’s security personnel had assaulted the tourist while both parties subsequently filed complaints over the incident, according to the police.
Malaka, the son of Public Relations and Public Affairs Minister Mervyn Silva, has been involved in several similar assault incidents in the past while in July last year he was hospitalised following an attack at the car park of a popular clothing store in Town Hall, Colombo.
On another occasion, Malaka Silva, was wanted in a case where he is alleged to have assaulted an Army Major in September, 2012.

Pakistan Taliban splinter group vows allegiance to Islamic State

BY SAUD MEHSUD AND MUBASHER BUKHARI-DERA ISMAIL KHAN Pakistan Mon Nov 17, 2014
Reuters(Reuters) - A splinter group of Pakistan's Taliban has pledged support to Islamic State (IS), a spokesman said on Monday, in another indication of the appeal of the Iraq- and Syria-based jihadist group in a region traditionally dominated by al Qaeda and local insurgencies.
Jundullah announced its backing after meeting a three-man delegation representing IS led by al Zubair al Kuwaiti, the group's spokesman Fahad Marwat told Reuters.
Jundullah is one of several Pakistani groups exploring relations with IS, whose fighters have captured swathes of Iraq and Syria in a drive to set up a self-declared caliphate. They share an aim to kill or drive out religious minorities and establish a hardline Sunni theocracy.
Analysts say that so far IS has mainly attracted sectarian groups rather than anti-state militants like the Taliban. Pakistan has a ready supply of hardened fighters and a population often receptive to sectarian hatred.
Pakistan's Sunni sectarian groups killed a record number of minority Shi'ite Muslims last year. Jundullah carried out a church bombing that killed around 80 Christians.
"They (Islamic State) are our brothers, whatever plan they have we will support them," said Jundullah spokesman Marwat.
His comments follow the release of a video last month by five Pakistani Taliban commanders pledging support to IS. Islamic State also has contacts with the banned Pakistani group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LeJ), militants and security officials said.
"The top leadership of LeJ visited Saudi Arabia and met Islamic State leaders at an undisclosed location at Saudi-Syria border," one militant told Reuters.
He said the meeting took place more than a year ago.
Many Pakistani militants said they felt torn by loyalty to Afghan Taliban leader Mullah Omar, who has strong historical ties to al Qaeda. IS itself broke away from al Qaeda.
"All anti-Shi'ite groups in Pakistan will welcome and support IS in Pakistan, though most of them will not announce it openly due to their allegiance to Mullah Omar," one said.
Last week, a leaked government memo warned the group had recruited 10,000-12,000 fighters inside Pakistan, but a government minister insisted it had no presence there. Militants and security officials also dismissed the memo as not credible.
Several militants said that hundreds of Pakistanis had gone to fight in Syria, but had done so through the Taliban or on their own. Five who returned took part in an August suicide attack on two Pakistani air bases, a policeman said.
Tribal rivalries split the Taliban, Pakistan's biggest militant group, this summer, leading to two main factions and several splinter groups.
Some analysts say Pakistanis declaring allegiance to IS is a ploy to grab headlines rather than a sign of operational links.
"They are the new poster boys of Islamic jihad and they have lots of money," said Saifullah Mahsud of Islamabad-based think tank the FATA Research Centre. "There is no doubt they (IS) are trying but these are more probing missions than anything else."

Cameron warns of looming 'global economic disaster'

David CameronChannel 4 News
MONDAY 17 NOVEMBER 2014
Prime Minister David Cameron gives a bleak assessment of the global economy and warns that the eurozone could be on the brink of recession.
Speaking following the G20 gathering of international leaders in Brisbane, Cameron said "red warning lights are once again flashing on the dashboard of the global economy" six years on from the crash that "brought the world to its knees".
The prime minister said that the UK's economic recovery was at risk against a "dangerous backdrop of instability and uncertainty", referencing the conflict in the middle east and the Ebola outbreak in west Africa.
Labour said Britain's economic recovery was still not being felt at home.
Writing in The Guardian newspaper, Cameron said: "As I met world leaders at the G20 in Brisbane, the problems were plain to see.
"The eurozone is teetering on the brink of a possible third recession, with high unemployment, falling growth and the real risk of falling prices too.
"Emerging markets, which were the driver of growth in the early stages of the recovery, are now slowing down.
"Despite the progress in Bali, global trade talks have stalled while the epidemic of Ebola, conflict in the Middle East and Russia's illegal actions in Ukraine are all adding a dangerous backdrop of instability and uncertainty."

'Fastest growing'

The British economy was the fastest growing in the G7, said Cameron. But he warned that the country was already seeing the effects of wider problems in the global economy, "with the impact of the eurozone slowdown on our manufacturing and our exports."
Labour highlighted comments made by the former prime minister Sir John Major, who told the BBC's Andrew Marr show on Sunday that "none of the growth in the economy has yet reached wage packets or salary slips".
Shadow Treasury chief secretary Chris Leslie said: "David Cameron claims his policies are working, but as even Sir John Major admits, most people still aren't feeling the recovery.
"Working people are £1,600 a year worse off under his Government, borrowing is going up so far this year and exports have fallen behind our competitors.
"David Cameron should be trying to strengthen growth and make sure working people finally benefit from it, not making excuses for slower growth.
Cameron's warning comes days after the Bank of England governor, Mark Carney, warned that inflation could fall below one per cent in the next six months.

Modern slavery affects more than 35 million people, report finds

Five countries including India, China and Russia account for 61% of all slavery, says Australia-based Walk Free Foundation

More than 35 million people around the world are trapped in a modern form of slavery, according to a report highlighting the prevalence of forced labour, human trafficking, forced marriages, debt bondage and commerical sexual exploitation.
The Walk Free Foundation (WFF), an Australia-based NGO that publishes the annual global slavery index, said that as a result of better data and improved methodology it had increased its estimate 23% in the past year.
Five countries accounted for 61% of slavery, although it was found in all 167 countries covered by the report, including the UK.
India was top of the list with about 14.29 million enslaved people, followed by China with 3.24 million, Pakistan 2.06 million, Uzbekistan 1.2 million, and Russia 1.05 million.
Mauritania had the highest proportion of its population in modern slavery, at 4%, followed by Uzbekistan with 3.97%, Haiti 2.3%, Qatar 1.36% and India 1.14%.
Andrew Forrest, the chairman and founder of WFF – which is campaigning for the end of slavery within a generation – said: “There is an assumption that slavery is an issue from a bygone era. Or that it only exists in countries ravaged by war and poverty.
“These findings show that modern slavery exists in every country. We are all responsible for the most appalling situations where modern slavery exists and the desperate misery it brings upon our fellow human beings.
“The first step in eradicating slavery is to measure it. And with that critical information, we must all come together – governments, businesses and civil society – to finally bring an end to the most severe form of exploitation.”
Countries identified as leading the fight to end modern slavery include Australia, Austria, Georgia, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US. Only Australia, Brazil and the US, however, were making efforts to address the issue in government procurement and the supply chains of businesses operating in there.
Modern slavery is a live political issue in the UK, with a bill on the issue moving through parliament and David Cameron highlighting it in his speech to the Conservative party conference this year.
“But there’s still more injustice when it comes to work, and it’s even more shocking. Criminal gangs trafficking people halfway around the world and making them work in the most disgusting conditions,” Cameron said.
“I’ve been to see these houses on terraced streets built for families of four, cramming in 15 people like animals. To those crime lords who think they can get away with it, I say ‘no, not in this country, not with this party’ … With our modern slavery bill we’re coming after you and we’re going to put a stop to it once and for all.”
Olly Buston, WFF’s movement director, said: “There is still a chance that the modern slavery bill will make Britain’s anti-slavery laws the best in the world. But the draft bill must be strengthened. Children and other victims of slavery need to be properly protected. And the bill must ensure that businesses take action to end slavery in their supply chains”.
