Malala's wise advice to President Obama and his surprising response

Nearly one year ago, Malala was invited to the White House by the Obama family. It was widely reported at the time that Malala told President Obama that drone strikes in her home country of Pakistan were creating suffering and increasing terrorism. She challenged him to do more to support education -- the best tool to fight terrorism.

Increasing Problems Of World

Refugees: An Empathy Needed

| by Laksiri Fernando
( August 20, 2014, Sydney, Sri Lanka Guardian) There were two court hearings in Australia and Sri Lanka on last Thursday (14 August) and Friday (15 August) respectively that drew our attention to the legality or illegality of refoulement (sending back) of asylum seekers to the countries that they have fled from. None is conclusive yet. This is in a background of new refugee influx in Mount Sinjar and Turkish border (number not confirmed) from the reprehensible persecution by the Islamic State (IS) or new conflicts in Iraq.

War, more often than not, acts as an escape valve for human emotions. All the pent up anger, hatred, dislikes and vengeance are unleashed on the enemy on the battlefront. When that mechanism comes to a cessation, a different dynamic takes its place and suicide it has been said has fast become the leading contender, substituting for the destruction of the enemy. We are sure psychologists, psychiatrists and social scientists would find more nuanced answers to this complex issue. Yet one cannot simply disregard the assertions of Daya Somasundaram, Professor of Psychiatry attached to the Jaffna University that the suicide rate in Jaffna has gone up considerably in the aftermath of the three decade-long civil war in Sri Lanka.

The Professor backs his claims with statistical evidence that shows 15 suicides per 100,000 in the Jaffna District prior to 2005, climbing steadily to 23 per 100,000 during Eelam War IV (August 2005 to May 2009), to what is now more than 25 per 100,000. Incidentally Sri Lanka's national average of 25 suicides per 100,000, which amounts to 8 to 10 deaths a day, has earned the country the dubious reputation of being placed third in the World Health Organization ranking for suicides in Asia, and 11th globally.

There is no disputing the fact that there has been an increase in the number of suicides in post-war Jaffna, and but what appears as relevant in the context of peace time developments, as articulated by the Professor to a group of Indian journalists, is that even during the 2002-2004 peace process there had been an upswing in the number of suicides when compared with the period when military operations were on-going.

This phenomenon is explained by the Professor as frustrations being better managed during the war, because there was a strong social support system cushioning the impact of various kinds of traumas and stresses. Explained further what this means is that under military siege, civilians clung together, but after the war, social cohesion and social support systems began to wear thin as families got splintered. This, coupled with economic deprivation, which continues to this day thanks to unimaginative government rehabilitation policies, the Professor believes has created not only splits in families and inter-personal issues, but also reduced the individual's 'social capital', leaving him/her nothing to fall back on during stressful situations.

The individual's 'social capital', the concept to which the Professor tends to attach much importance, needs to be paid special attention to, rather than disregarded as something inconsequential. The Professor's assertion that the government should help increase the 'social capital' of war-affected people by restoring pre-existing social and familial networks and making these groups the vehicle of rehabilitation schemes, needs scrupulous consideration and the government may well be advised to take this emerging phenomenon more seriously than they are doing now.
People, no matter their race or beliefs, react to life's traumatic situations in the same fundamental way. The Bible tells us that King Saul committed suicide after he was severely wounded in battle, and, history records Judas as also having committed suicide. This is not an excuse for society to shrug its shoulders and accept suicide as something that happens, as something inevitable. Rather it is a reminder that both the strong and the weak, when pushed beyond their limits will reach breaking point and will cry for help in ways society would not clearly understand. For, more often than not, an attempt at suicide is not an attempt to end one's life, but a plea for help.

In this context, the Professor's recommendations that 'social capital' of war-affected people be increased by restoring pre-existing social and familial networks and making these groups the vehicle of rehabilitation programmes, becomes important and worthy of being looked into more seriously. Whether the government policies can accommodate Professor's theories, is something that needs to be explored, but if as a country we are really interested in a lasting resolution to the problem of high incidents of suicide, whether among the Northern Tamils or Southern Sinhalese, a consensus must be reached as to the way in which it could be tackled for the good of man. And in this respect academics and experts must be listened to and their advice taken seriously.

Sri Lanka: The Levels Of Violence

During The War & After

( August 19, 2014,Lincoln - NE , Sri Lanka Guardian) Five years ago, the Sri Lankan security forces achieved what had been believed to be an impossible task. They not only defeated the forces of the LTTE but killed or captured all of their leaders seemingly ending the 30 year old conflict. However the post-war period has generated a debate over the peace building process which began in May 2009.

CSR saga: Bishop of Colombo stands by Anglican priest and disappearances campaigner

August 20, 2014
  • Rt. Rev. Canagasabey calls Fr. Sathivel’s ministry “courageous”
  • Affirms he is a long-standing, credible member of Colombo Diocese after monks claimed he was driven out of church
  • GL criticises diplomats for attending meeting with missing peoples’ families
By Dharisha Bastians
Bishop of Colombo, Rt. Rev. Dhiloraj Canagasabey has publicly stood by Anglican priest and disappearances activist, Fr. M. Sathivel, who was recently targeted by a monk led group claiming to represent families of the disappeared in the south.
The protesting group, later calling itself the Dead and Missing Persons Parents’ Front, violently disrupted a meeting with the families of the disappeared from the Northern Province on 4 August at the Centre for Society and Religion in Maradana, where Fr. Sathivel was also present.
“Following this incident, group of monks and persons had held a press conference wherein they produced a picture of Rev. Sathivel and said that he is no longer a priest, discredited person and disowned by his own church,” Bishop Canagasabey said in a statement issued on Monday (18).
The Bishop of Colombo said he does not in any way condone the action against the peaceful gathering. “As his Bishop affirm that Rev. M. Sathivel is a long standing and credible priest of the Diocese of Colombo with over 25 years of parish and community work with a justice and peace consciousness. I uphold him in my prayers and pray to God for his courageous ministry which is part of our Lord’s own Ministry,” the Bishop said in his statement.  During a press briefing on 5 August, the DMPPF claimed that Fr. M. Sathivel had been driven out of the Christian Church. The group claimed that the priest had no place to stay and accused him of trying to assault some of the monks who disrupted the meeting. The monks accused the Anglican priest of being the main reason for the situation to become heated on 4 August.
The controversial disruption of the meeting inside the church grounds has garnered significant attention because representatives of several Colombo-based diplomatic missions had been present at the discussions.
Speaking to foreign correspondents at Temple Trees yesterday, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said the Government had nothing to do with the disruption which was an altercation between “two groups”.
External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris who was also at yesterday’s briefing claimed attempts had been made to record evidence from the aggrieved families to be handed over to the UN investigators in Geneva. He claimed recording devices had been found in a room adjacent to the meeting hall.
“I took the issue up with the Ambassadors of the respective diplomatic missions that were present. Participation in that event does not fall within the ambit of diplomatic activity,” Minister Peiris charged.
400 years old jumma mosque of historic value razed to the ground by Gota’s forces !
(Lanka-e-News- 19.Aug.2014, 2.30PM) A most precious and most valuable ancient mosque of the Muslims with a history of over 400 years in existence in Keerimalai ,Kinniya, Trincomalee was razed to the ground by the forces on the instructions of Gotabaya Rajapakse. This Jumma mosque that was built in 1733 A.D. was totally reduced to dust on the 16 th Saturday night .

According to the residents of that area , the forces have chased away the shocked public who went there on hearing of this devastation of a religious place. The public were not allowed by the forces even to get close to the venue of wanton destruction

In 2009 after the conclusion of the war , the residents were ordered to leave that area and seek location elsewhere , while the forces forcibly acquired it.

This mosque that was open to the devotees for 400 long years was not opened after the forces forcibly took over the region. While the politicos and the forces had given an assurance that a solution will be found to the mosque’s issue , on 16 th night under the cover of darkness it was totally demolished and devastated by the forces.

The administrators of the mosque have lodged a complaint with the police .

It is significant to note that this 400 years old mosque which had a most historic and religious value locally and internationally earned a place in the world heritage . It is a pity that the wickedness of the brutal Rajapakses which cannot bear to see anything worthwhile and useful to the people did not want to spare even this most valuable religious site .

Pathetic Surrender Of Free Speech; BBS Dictates Who Can Hold Protests And Who Can’t

“Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.” ~Helen Keller
gnanasara GAThe Colombo Magistrate’s Court issued on Tuesday, August 12, 2104, restraining orders on the Thawheed JamathBodu Bala Sena and Sinhala Ravayaorganizations preventing them from holding demonstrations and protests in Colombo and the Colombo Fort area. The demonstrations were scheduled for Wednesday, August 13. The Police making the announcement regarding the said court order stated: “The court order was issued by the Colombo Magistrate’s Court following information given by the Colombo Fort police that demonstrations were planned for today by the Thawheed Jamath, Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) and Sinhala Ravaya (SR) organizations.”
What seems to be a victory for peace is in fact a dangerous alternative to the surrender of two fundamental rights, freedom of movement and freedom of speech assured to all Sri Lankans by our Constitution. Once again the Bodu Bala Sena and its fellow travelers have scored a point. And the Rajapaksas stand to gain at least on two fronts. Firstly, they give an ostensible reason why we must have peace in the midst of our City centers and secondly, they hide their hypocrisy in their Middle-East policy of backing the regime of Israel that is considered the world over as practicing ‘apartheid’, while portraying themselves as supporters of the Palestinian Liberation Movement. Running with the hare and hunting with the hound continues, even on the international stage.

“We will try to direct the leaders already there, on the correct path and if we fail to do so, we will come up with a new candidate who will be a national leader and support him. We have also received the blessings of the Mahanayakas for this initiative,” he had stated.
Moreover, Gnanasara had said that the BBS will be making preparations to promote the candidate of their choice by the end of September.

Throwing spokes in the wheel

August 21, 2014
An impending alliance between the feuding Ranil and Sajith factions may offer hope of unity within the main opposition United National Party, but will it torpedo burgeoning hopes of a common Opposition platform to contest the 2015 presidential poll?
On 24 July, within the musty confines

of New Town Hall on Green Path, extraordinary political scenes unfolded. Ironically, the politically-charged event featured only academic, professional and civil society speakers, all of whom discussed constitution and nation building, rampant abuse of power and the broken quality of the present system.

‘Swallowed’ reports

Editorial-

Parliament was told on Tuesday that 17 presidential commissions appointed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa from 2005 to 2013 had cost the taxpayers Rs. 272 million. Chief Government Whip and Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, in answer to a question by JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, MP said all those commissions save one had submitted their reports to the President. A question that went unasked was whether they had served any useful purpose.

Minister Gunawardena, asked whether those reports would be presented to Parliament, said the Presidential Commissions Act did not make it mandatory for them to be tabled in the House. The government and the Opposition, he added, should seek a common approach to amend the existing laws so that everybody could have access to such documents. Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa supported his view.

What one gathers from the remarks made by Minister Gunawardena and Speaker Rajapaksa is that though the existing laws do not require the Executive President to present to Parliament or release into the public domain presidential commission reports they do not prevent him from doing so suo moto.

The JVP Leader is one of the few parliamentarians who ask sensible questions in Parliament. He bowls toe crushing Yorkers to government ministers, who more often than not utter inanities and cut pathetic figures. He should be thanked for taking up the issue of presidential commissions, their costs and reports.

In the days of press censorship when some of the present-day champions of media freedom unflinchingly wielded the blue pencil and whimsically struck off chunks of our stories, the only way we could give vent to our anger was to leave spaces in the mutilated articles with the word, ‘censored’ prominently printed therein. The propaganda organ of the Communist Party, Aththa, went a step further and ridiculed the censors by printing ‘balla visin kana ladi’ (‘eaten by the dog’) in those places. Likewise, one may say of the presidential commission reports at issue:‘Janadipathi visin gilina ladi’ (swallowed by the President)!

The question is why the President does not make public those reports of his own accord without waiting till new laws are brought in or amendments are made to the existing ones to make it mandatory for them to be presented to Parliament. Now that the Chief Government Whip, the Speaker, the JVP Leader—and presumably all other MPs—having agreed in principle on the need to make it mandatory for presidential commission reports to be made public, let action be initiated to achieve that objective. After all, sovereignty is said to be in the people and parliamentarians, being their representatives exercising their legislative power, should be given access to such documents.

Respecting people’s right to information is a prerequisite for ensuring transparency which is one of the pillars of good governance. Governments may refrain from disclosing some sensitive information deemed classified for justifiable reasons such as national security. But, it defies comprehension why the reports produced by commissions whose deliberations are not confidential cannot be made public.

Most of the presidential commissions, under successive governments, have been like the run of the mill soap operas––disappointing from the beginning to the end. Worse some of them are even without proper endings! The practice of politicians using them as instruments to harass their rivals—the so-called Batalanda Commission being a case in point—has caused a severe erosion of public faith therein. But, since the people bear the cost of those expensive exercises they should be able at least to leaf through the voluminous commission reports most of which may leave them none the wiser. Let that be the bottom line.
Gotabaya involved in 59 kilos heroin detection at Katugastota: Photos herein testify: All attempts to suppress: stooge Weerawansa plays key role
(Lanka-e-News- 20.Aug.2014, 3.30PM) The anti narcotics bureau , the police media spokesman , the State media and the shameless media coolies stooping to do every sordid bidding of the government are reportedly moving heaven and earth to suppress the entire episode pertaining to the 59 kilos heroin haul detection by the anti narcotics bureau on 15 th August at Katugastota , as well as the shocking exposures that a new heroin mafia is on the rampage in Sri Lanka .

The necessity to suppress this heroin mafia operation is all the more because behind these heroin mafia is its godfather- the criminal defense secretary of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapakse.

It is well to recall that recently , the STF in fulfillment of a sordid government contract entrusted to them , a big din was made that 85 kilos of heroin was detected by the STF , only to be made known subsequently that it was not heroin. In other words it was proved later it was just a media publicity gimmick.(the true picture relating to that enacted drama was exposed by Lanka e news previously. In addition to these illegal actions , when heroin detections were made by the government , the true culprits were not apprehended, or if in rare cases , when the actual heroin dealers like ‘Wanathe Thilan’ were apprehended , they were allowed or aided to escape from prison.

In any case , it is in the midst of the despicable lawless climate in the country and raging heroin trafficking, another heroin haul of 59 kilos was seized recently from a closed jewelry shop situated on the Katunayake – Kandy main road , at Katugastota along with the heroin dealers connected therewith. The heroin were contained in packets that looked like tea and milk food packets. The suspect arrested was by the name of Ahamed Sabry Thajudeen , and his assistant Mohomed Safroos too was arrested in Matale, Palapathwela.

Sabry Thajudeen owns a house at Katugastota , and another two houses : one at Pirivena road , Mt. Lavinia and another at Ratmalana opposite Maliban factory. He had however lived in a house at Akurana . At the time Thajudeen was arrested , another three men and a woman were also taken into custody . When Safroos was arrested another woman too was taken into custody.

Sabry was the main heroin dealer of SL among these suspects. The heroin magnate who supplied the contraband to Sabry is a Sri Lankan Muslim businessman residing in Malaysia. His name is ‘Dato Mohomed Mujahid’ , who is the brother in law of Ahamed Sabry arrested with 59 kilos of heroin.

Dato Mohomed Mujahid owns a luxury yacht . He is a very close bosom business pal of Sri Lanka’s criminal defense secretary Gotabaya . Besides , he has close links and relationships with Lieutenant colonels in the forces , Ministers of the government and perfumery businessmen – a common trend in SL nowadays under the present regime .

We are reluctantly compelled to publish herein a photograph that bears testimony to the close ties Dato has with Gotabaya . At least , let us hope after this publication , the anti narcotics bureau will truly conduct an impartial and bold investigation in the best interests of the country regardless of the powers and influence wielded by Dato and Gotabaya , arrest the latter no matter his lofty official position and duly question Gota the criminal defense secretary (who parades as a paragon of virtue) , on his connections with Dato the criminal offense heroin chakrawarthy.

There is no doubt that the whole nation apart from being rudely shocked over this episode , is eagerly awaiting the most powerful legal action being instituted against all the culprits including Dato and Gotabaya , with a view to meting out deterrent and exemplary punishment to them . Yet sadly , the anti narcotics bureau, police media spokesman and the website of Wimal Weerawansa , the notorious henchman and lackey of Gotabaya are taking all the measures possible to suppress the main culprit Malaysian Dato’s involvement , and Gotabaya’s implications in the crime on the directives of the criminal defense secretary himself who is a party directly or indirectly to this crime . Incidentally , Dato Mohomed Mujahid’s brother in law, Sabry is considered the third leading heroin drug dealer in SL.

Though the entire modus operandi of this drug trafficking as well as Dato’s and Gotabaya’s involvements have been exposed by the group already in custody via confessions , it is unfortunate instead of interrogating them and arresting them, investigations are being manipulated to save and serve Gotabaya .

The cardboard patriots who go behind Gnanassaras blindly should understand if they have even a little grey matter that kudu Gota who was at the bottom of the arsons committed on business places and attacks launched on the innocent Muslims at Alutgama and Beruwala is playing a double game by associating with Muslim heroin barons and aiding them secretly at the same time.

The photographs herein depict the true owner of the 59 kilos heroin and his super luxury yacht , as well as his close ties with Gota now better known as kudu Gota.

We are in receipt of a wealth of secret information in connection with this Dato and Gotabaya kudu empire. We shall be revealing them soon.
