‘Justice Hurried; Justice buried’ (Continued from last week)

August 4, 2014
When the white men were ruling this country, all murder cases, meant to take away the lives of men for the offences committed, were tried before the senior most judges in the Supreme Court. As the ‘Suddhas’ thought only the veterans in the judiciary should be permitted to take away a man’s life.

Reason for disruption of water supply to Colombo revealed

TUESDAY, 05 AUGUST 2014
lankaturthA very reliable source reveals that the reason for the sudden disruption of water supply to many parts of Colombo was due to raising the bridge at Battaramulla – Parliament junction so that boats could be navigated freely on Diyawanna Oya.
The main pipeline supplying water to Colombo had been on a level with the old bridge. When the bridge was raised to facilitate boats sailing on the Diyawanna, the water supply had been disrupted. As the raising of the bridge and the pipeline could not be carried out during the planned period hundreds of thousands of people in Colombo were denied drinking water for days.
The operation of raising the pipeline had been carried out without consulting engineers of the Water Supply and Drainage Board but on orders from Urban Development Authority. A coupling used to join the huge pipes had burst when trying to raise the pipeline. It had taken more than 10 hours to repair the coupling.
As a result of this arbitrary move to raise the pipeline without consulting the proper authorities a large number of people were inconvenienced including students who sit the GCE A/L examination which commences today (5th). This is not the first time hundreds of thousands of people have been inconvenienced due to the arbitrary moves by the Urban Development Authority carried out for the entertainment agenda of the government on the pretext of development. The public have had to encounter such ordeals due to the direct orders and arbitrary moves by the Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.
The water supply has been resumed by now. However, the people had to undergo the ordeal for more than 60 hours.

Colombo’s 72 Hour Water Cut To Fast-Track Gota’s Yachting Project: Harsha De Silva

Colombo Telegraph
August 5, 2014
As several parts of Colombo and thousands of residents in the city and suburbs suffered through a 72 hour water cut that began on Saturday morning and is yet to be restored the opposition revealed that the disruption was to fast-track a Urban Development Authority yachting project on the Diyawanna Oya.
Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa
Secretary to the Ministry of Defence Gotabaya Rajapaksa
Dr. Harsha De Silva the UNP’s Kotte Organiser said the ‘bosses of the defence establishment’ had ordained that the UDA project be completed by its end of month deadline.
The Water Supply and Drainage Board was claiming the interruption of supply was due to a repair, but subsequently new information regarding the disruption had come to light the UNP Parliamentarian noted.
“We have come to know that there was no repair needed but the main water lines at the Polduwa bridge near Parliament had to be raised so that a UDA project on the Diyawanna Oya could be completed by the end of the month deadline imposed by the Defence establishment,” De Silva said.
According to the UNP Parliamentarian, the project was aimed at allowing leisure boats and yachts on the Diywanna for the “super rich”.
The Water Board has missed deadline after deadline to restore water to several areas of Colombo including Kotte, Jambugasmulla, Nugegoda and Udahamulla, after the initial disruption was due to be only for 36 hours over the weekend.
On Monday night, Water Board officials promised to resume supply by midnight, but on Tuesday morning the Board claimed supply had been restored only at 5 AM and would take ‘few more hours” to resume properly.
The UDA comes under the powerful Defence Ministry run by Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Alas… Who Can Prevent Rajapaksa’s Third Term?

| by Nilantha Ilangamuwa
( August 5, 2014, Colombo, Sri Lanka Guardian) Who will be the winner of the next presidential election? Is there any doubt in the minds of the citizens that the outcome has not already been decided? In the rotten political culture of Sri Lanka is there any room for a genuine election? Perhaps you may, like me, dream and yearn for a society which stands on the shoulders of human dignity and which is prepared to stand up and say enough is enough.
Immediately following the departure of Pope Francis, who is visiting the Island nation, it is expected that the government will declare the date of the next election. This, of course, means the country is going to spend billions of desperately needed capital to elect a new president, or make sure the the existing one is guaranteed another six years. Sadly, when you look at the options and examine the devastating scenario facing the opposition collation it is very much a matter of Hobson’s choice.

The opposition and its fans are trying desperately to select a common candidate that will fire the imagination of the people. He, or she will have to come up with all the usual campaign promises but this is where the situation falls down, because the citizens of Sri Lanka are fully aware that any such promises will evaporate as soon as their candidate moves into the Presidential Palace. On the other hand they may well vote for any half suitable choice simply to ensure that the reign of the Rajapaksas comes to an end.

However, what everyone must realise is that the Tyrant is not going to go quietly into the night. The Rajapaksas simply have too much to loose. They have invested too much time and effort into ensuring a dynasty that will last for a thousand years.

All the opposition parties are in a severe dilemma over selecting their common candidate. It is more than evident that most of them have forgotten common sense in this hour of need. None of them are think beyond what the incumbent president has already sold to grab the votes. In other words, the president understands perfectly what Walter Lippmann once explained as the “manufacture of consent” which is an innovation in the usage of democracy.

Since coming to power Rajapaksa has not only been able to ignore the local and international protests over his style of governance but gain ground steadily for his personality beneficiaries. Neither the country nor the people were able to grasp his, almost brilliant single-mindedness, when it came to retaining power and fulfilling his personal agenda, which was, simply, to enrich himself, his family and close friends at a cost which had to be paid by the people. It is this single-mindedness that the opposition parties have to deal with if they have any hope of defeating him at the next election.

The secret behind Rajapaksa’s success is nothing else but the “manufacture of consent” in order to distort the truth. Here is the main principal that the opposition parties appear to be ignorant of. It is this concept that they are going to have to master if they want to take power. Singing their old songs about democracy and the good of the people is going to get them nowhere. Drinking new wine in an old glass does not make the wine taste any better. It only beguiles the drinker.

As I wrote to the local press two weeks ago, the president is focusing on two major silent but deadly strategies. First is disabling every possibility for the opposition to field a common candidate. He most certainly does not want another General Sarath Fonseka, like in the previous election.

the second is making for a financially weaker opposition. In reality, the next election will be more about the communication skills and technological advances each parties have. It will certainly be more than what the country has faced in the past. The ruling parties will experience 3D meetings and other kinds of propaganda machineries. But, to-date, no one knows anything of the counter strategies of the helpless and internally divided opposition alliance.

If the Rajapaksa remain in power, and yes, I do ‘Rajapaksas’ because it is nothing less than a family business then the situation ‘will’ change. It will change for the worse because their regime will be firmly established and the same old rotten system will be established with a greater degree of greed and power.

Then the opposition will be powerless for generations to come. In order to shatter the dream of the tyrant they have to convince the public not only of their dreams and aspirations for the country but why they opposed the tyrant and how they are going to reform the system.

This is the matter of intelligent discourse which has to be designed within the most trusted people in the alliance. As Mao Tse Tung once said, a plan must be designed in the room but its implementation must take place on the streets in full view of the public. And then there can be possibilities for a real candidate who can conquer the tyrant and help the people to achieve the real meaning of freedom.

Unfortunately no signs have yet arisen that any such candidate in ready to put his or her name forward. And if this does not happen soon the outcome of the next election is a forgone conclusion. Will the opposition come up with an authentic ideology which is most urgently required by the nation?

That which shall not be named

  • GroundviewsOn the 19th of July 2014, my cook hands me a police form to fill. It is one of those usual forms that we were inundated with during the war. The form asks for almost the same information as the election registration forms, with the one exception of asking for details of everybody in the house, not just those eligible to vote from there. Being inculcated in the behavior of obeying authority, I duly filled in the form. Head of household being me, then my husband, then my parents, then my cook.

Rishad Bathiudeen: A Potential Future Muslim Leader?

    Colombo Telegraph
By Rushdy Nizar -August 5, 2014
    Rushdy Nizar

The post-independent politics of Sri Lanka can be characterised as a two-party structure. Invariably, since independence we have seen the patronage of two leading political parties in shape of the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). Although more recently the Sri Lankan political landscape is punctuated by the sway of emerging political parties, having the clout of the king-maker, hence, an indication of the multi-party system and greater democratic propensity. However, Sri Lanka, like many developing nations cultivates political parties on ethnic, region and religious lines.
Tamil areas are generally dominated by Tamil parties and the same goes with the predominantly Muslim majority areas led by Muslim parties, though not until the formation of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC). Further, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) has become a reckonable force, arguably the third most powerful party. The party has gone through different levels of transformation from Marxist political philosophy to the adoption of domestic political culture.
The formation of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress by late M.H.M. Ashraff was a landmark historical event in the Island. It was not the formation that raised alarm, but the unconditional support of then governments for it creation. The support was well crafted and endeavored to polarize Sri Lankan Muslims as a separate distinctive Tamil speaking entity, an attempt to divide and dissect yet another identity for the Muslims. Such a political ploy further alienated the isolated and scattered Muslim community, yet created deep-rooted feelings amongst them on the extent to which they are an integral part of the nation. The ploy hyphenated the socio-political and socio-economic status of Muslims with M.H.M. Ashraff and SLMC. Undoubtedly, the dispersed Muslim community found a certain degree of integration, and Messianic solace in the SLMC.     Read More

    Compare Israel With The LTTE

    Colombo Telegraph

    Hameed Abdul Karim
    Hameed Abdul Karim
I was more than disappointed when I read your editorial in the Sunday Times (August 2, 2014) where you directly compare the Hamas with the now vanquished LTTE suggesting that Hamas too is a terrorist organisation as Israel and its backers in west, the so-called ‘international community’, want the whole world to believe.
It is open season on Muslims in Sri Lanka as in the whole world, so I will be treading on dangerous grounds when I say Hamas is not a terrorist organisation. I know also that useful idiots like ‘caliph’ Baghdadi of Islamic State notoriety contribute immensely to the sound bites of ‘Islamic terrorism’ that are ever present in the echo chambers of the world media.
    Free and fair election
But please remember Hamas was democratically elected in an election that was supervised by Jimmy Carter who said the process were ‘free and fair’. But of course such reports do not appear at all in any media anywhere as frequently as the term ‘Hamas is a terrorist organisation’ does. If the people’s will is the defining term in a democracy, as we hear so often, then the world must accept Hamas as an elected body and if necessary in times of oppression and slaughter support them when they offer legitimate resistance which is permitted under international law the same way it supported the French Resistance Movement in its struggle against German occupation. But the world, especially the so called ‘international community’, makes fish of one and fowl of another. The Nazis dubbed the French Resistance fighters as ‘terrorists’ but the world supported them, quite rightly, as a legitimate resistance to Germany’s occupation of their country.Read More

Will summon Sri Lankan High Commissioner: Sushma Swaraj

“We will certainly summon the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka and convey this to him,” she said.
“We will certainly summon the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka and convey this to him,” she said.
    Return to frontpageAugust 4, 2014
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Monday said the government will summon the Sri Lankan High Commissioner over a derogatory article mentioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
“The government has strongly condemned the development,” Sushma Swaraj said in the Rajya Sabha.
“We will certainly summon the High Commissioner of Sri Lanka and convey this to him,” the minister said.
This came after the upper house saw disruptions over the issue, losing its Question Hour.
The upper house saw two adjournments during the Question Hour as AIADMK members trooped near the Chairman’s podium raising the issue.
An objectionable article about Jayalalithaa and Modi was published on the Sri Lanka’s Defence Ministry website last week, and was taken down in a hurry.
Sri Lanka also offered an “unqualified apology” for the article.

Indian teenager cuts man's penis off after he attempts to rape her

    The Independent
ANDREW BUNCOMBE -Tuesday 05 August 2014

An Indian teenager took a knife to a so-called tantric who allegedly tried to rape her for a second time and cut off his penis.

The man, who is also the girl’s uncle, is currently being hunted by detectives who praised what they described as the young woman’s “courage”.
Police in the Madhepura district of Bihar said the young woman, believed to be aged either 17 or 18, had been raped last month by her uncle, who is known in the local area as a tantric and who performs rituals. When he allegedly tried to assault her a second time, she was prepared and had armed herself with a knife.
The girl then reported what had happened to a village council. When the council failed to tackle the matter to her satisfaction, the young woman contacted women police officers, located at the local station.
One report in the Indian media said the girl had been taken to see the tantric by her parents after she fell ill and that he was tasked with “curing” her.
Senior officer AK Singh, superintendent at the Alam Nagar police station, located around 200 miles east of the state capital, Patna, told The Independent that was not been the case but that the man had abused his position as a member of the family and her trust.
“The incident happened 20 days ago. Initially the girl went to the [village council] but when that was unable to resolve the matter the case was brought to me,” said Mr Singh. “We then filed a case at the women’s police station.”
Almost every day the India media reports shocking sex crimes alleged to have been committed from across the length and breadth of the country.
The prominence and space given to such reports has been sharply elevated since the December 2012 gang-rape and murder of a student in Delhi.
    VIDEO: ANTI-RAPE PROTESTS IN INDIA
The assault and murder of the young woman, who had boarded a bus with a friend after a visit to the cinema, sparked protests and a debate within the country about the treatment and position of women.
The government introduced a series of tougher penalties for those convicted of rape and fast-track courts to handle the cases.
Mr Singh, the police official in Bihar, said the alleged attacker had fled after the incident and that officers were looking for him. Asked whether any charges had been filed against the young woman, he replied: “Why should we file a case against her? We should applaud her bravery and courage.”

Witnessing the systematic destruction of Gaza

    HomeAugust 4, 201
People walk through the rubble during a pause in the Israeli assault on Gaza (Iyad al Baba)Nearly one-quarter of Gaza's 1.8 million residents are on the move as Israel's bombing campaign continues to target whole neighborhoods, hospitals, United Nations shelters and civilian infrastructure. The number of people killed since Israel began the so-called Operation Protective Edge is nearly 2,000, with some 10,000 injured. The death toll has overtaken the more than 1,400 killed by Israel during its late 2008-early 2009 Operation Cast Lead.

    A brief respite in Gaza

Allison Deger on August 4, 2014
The War of Ideas in the Middle EastOver the past three and a half weeks Israel’s Operation Protective Edge has sunk Gaza into a besieged land corridor of misery. The civilian casualties have exceeded 1,800, and over 500,000–a quarter of Gaza’s population–are displaced. Although overpowering, the devastation does have brief breaks. During ceasefire hours a semblance of normal life returns.
When I had a chance to visit Gaza, an internationally-lauded lull in fire was underway on July 25 and 26, and I visited a park honoring unknown fallen soldiers in Gaza City that brimmed with the newly homeless and the dislocated enjoying a brief respite. They fled from Shuja’iyeh–the first town blanketed in leaflets from the Israeli army ordering Palestinians to vacate for a ground incursion–and Beit Hanoun, an equally dilapidated community near the Erez Crossing.
    Gaza City
Of course ceasefires are not particularly safe as they end abruptly. For some it was a time to finally reach their homes after hours of walking in the summer heat, although often only to discover it had been totally destroyed the night before. And even with the risk of roaming Israeli tanks and ongoing operations to explode tunnels that run under civilian homes, ceasefires offer the only reasonable time when Palestinians can attempt to view their houses abandoned under fire, to swim in a putrid fountain that smells of waste, and to purchase clothing and food. I spoke to many who had not eaten or drunk water for days. For them, a ceasefire meant they could undertake the most basic task of walking to a corner store and filling a tank of water.
“I just came,” said a bewildered Firas, 15, from Shuja’iyeh before cannonballing into a white tiled fountain in Gaza City. Firas is displaced along with his entire family, holed up in a one bedroom apartment that overlooks the green square. He splashed with other children younger than him, all of whom are also living in cramped apartments, or rented spaces in the backs of mini-markets that line the boulevard. When I spoke to him it was the first time in five days that he was able to go outside and enter the cool water 50 meters from his shelter. “It’s good, but the leaves from the trees are bothering me while swimming.”

Gaza ceasefire live: Israel withdraws troops

    Channel 4 NewsTUESDAY 05 AUGUST 2014
Israel and Hamas enter a 72-hour truce mediated by Egypt with a view to encouraging negotiations on a more enduring end to the month-old Gaza war.

The ceasefire, which is meant to last 72 hours and allow for negotiations in Cairo on a more durable cessation of hostilities, began at 8 am (0500 GMT).
Minutes before, air raid sirens sounded throughout southern Israel and as far north as outlying areas of Jerusalem, triggered by a volley of rockets that Hamas claimed responsibility for. There was no immediate word of casualties.

Israeli ground forces withdrew from the Gaza Strip ahead of the truce, with a military spokesman saying their main goal of destroying cross-border infiltration tunnels had been completed.

Troops and tanks would be "redeployed in defensive positions outside the Gaza Strip and we will maintain those defensive positions," spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Peter Lerner said, reflecting Israeli readiness to resume fighting if attacked.
Gaza officials say the war has killed 1,834 Palestinians, most of them civilians. Israel says 64 of its soldiers and three civilians have been killed since fighting began on July 8, after a surge in Palestinian rocket launches.

Israel was expected to send delegates to join talks in Cairo to cement a longer-term deal during the course of the truce.

Bomb Gaza: the 'disgusting' games on Google's app store

Google has been criticised for allowing 'absolutely disgusting' computer games which 'glorify the horror and violence of the bombing of Gaza' to be hosted on its Play store

Google is facing angry criticism for allowing "absolutely disgusting" violent games based on the bombing of Gaza to be hosted on its Play app store.
By Matthew Sparkes, Deputy Head of Technology-04 Aug 2014
PhotoSmartphone games such as Gaza Assault: Code Red are available openly on the store, where the player takes control of an Israeli drone equipped with “powerful weapons” over Gaza. A description of the Android game says: “Terrorist cells are launching rockets into your country, do you have what it takes to protect your citizens?” The software allows users to play for first five levels for free, but then charges for a full version.
Another game, which is free to download, is called simply "Bomb Gaza". The game's logo includes an F16 fighter jet, as used by Israel's military, and the description tells users that they must "drop bombs and avoid killing civilians". The game was added to the Play store on July 29 and has already been downloaded between 500 and 1,000 times.
One Google user who commented on Bomb Gaza's description said: "To think that you can turn genocide, murder and ethnic cleansing into a game is absolutely disgusting", while another said it was "utterly shameful".
A third user added: "My beloved brothers and sisters are dying in Gaza and some stupid ignoramus decides to make a game like this."
Another Android game currently available is called Whack the Hamas, which claims on its description page to have been "inspired by the operation 'Tzuk Eitan'." That name, which translates as Protective Edge, is the codename given to the Israel Defense Forces's operation against Gaza. The game's description says: "The Hamasites are coming out of their tunnels! Don't let them escape, otherwise they will hurt innocent civilians!"
Chris Doyle, the director of The Council for Arab-British Understanding, said that such games were in “very, very poor taste”.
“These games glorify the horror and violence of the bombing of Gaza, sanitising for a younger generation what is a dreadful conflict that has killed thousands and decimated the lives of hundreds of thousands. It raises serious questions of Google’s ethical standards if these games remain hosted on its platforms,” he said.
“Any war games that are clearly designed to support the continuation of a conflict like this in such a very delicate environment are really dangerous. We’ve seen huge amounts of hate language and bigotry over the past few weeks. It’s the last sort of things that’s needed: anything that somehow sanitises violence
“It merely serves to propagandise young people, it normalises it. It clearly has a political purpose.
“You can have video games that deal with war, but when you base it in a reality of a conflict that’ going on right now it’s extremely problematic. It’s in very, very poor taste and it doesn’t create a culture of peace - and we need to, more than ever before.”
Google was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.
