Death threats issued to journalists and Jaffna uni staff, students over May 18 remembrance
20 May 2014
A death threat has been issued to staff and students at the University of Jaffna, as well as journalists over their attempts to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Mullivaikal massacre despite the military banning any public events.

In a flyer distributed around Jaffna today, the staff, students and journalists were given a "final warning" against those "encouraging or resurrecting terrorism".

Some individuals, including journalists who played prominent role in reporting on remembrance events held this weekend as well as the heavy military presence around political party offices and temples, have been explicitly named.

Stating that previous warnings had been ignored, the death threat said "they still do not reform, the final sentence is a death sentence. The final day has been marked for some."

"Do not take this lightly as with previous warnings. You are guaranteed to be freed from this world," it concluded, signed by the 'Nation Guarding Force' and dated May 18.

Translation:

Final warning

Those trying to encourage terrorism in the University of Jaffna are going to be punished.

After terrorism had been defeated, they are attempting to grow terrorism inside the University of Jaffna.

We have identified those treacherous forces that are making such attempts.

In addition to identifying them, the lecturers, deans and students at Univerisity of Jaffna, we have received reports of certain media workers working alongside them.

Despite issuing warnings to them several times they show no signs of reforming, they continue to take part in terrorist activities along side students and staff.

This is their final warning.

Many have been identified including Pidaathupathi Sivanathan, Teachers Union head Rasakumaaran, Students Union head Kirupa Komes [and] newspaper journalist Shalin [and] Nirojan.

If they still do not reform, the final sentence is a death sentence.

The final day has been marked for some.

Do not take this lightly as with previous warnings.

You are guaranteed to be freed from this world.

On the morning of May 18, Tamil media and political parties were targeted as heavily armed troops surrounded the offices of UthayanThinakkural newspapers, the Tamil National People's Front (TNPF) and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA).

Attempts by mourners to say prayers for the dead within temples were also stopped, as armed troops surrounded Nallur and Keerimalai temples, blocking off access to Tamils.

Earlier in the week the military banned all temple events and public gatherings to commemorate the dead, stating that no bells should toll on May 17 and 18.

The University of Jaffna was ordered shut earlier this month, prompting widespread condemnation from students and staff. Attempts by students to donate blood as an act of remembrance were also stopped, as troops blocked access to the blood donation centre at Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
IUSF pledges action against cops

By Aisha Nazim-May 20, 2014

The Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) yesterday pledged to take action against the police and prison officials who were instrumental in detaining and assaulting Allied Health Science (AHS) undergraduates during clashes last Friday (16).

Convener of the student movement, Najith Indika, yesterday claimed that though many students sustained injuries in the encounter, two of the students were not given medical treatment despite severe injuries.
"Four students were taken to hospital, but two others – including the activist, who had an injury directly below his eye – was not taken to hospital but directly to prison. We will take strict action against these assaults, and take it to the highest of officials," Indika told Ceylon Today.

According to Indika, even the Colombo Fort Magistrate had demanded to know how the students had been inflicted with such injuries by the police. The Magistrate had also warned the police against committing such acts of violence against students again. He added that the unionists would take this matter to the international arena as well as to the Human Rights Commission, and make the world aware of how undergraduates are treated when they fight for their rights.

Many unions and political parties have spoken up against the brutal assault of the undergraduates, and have pledged their support.
Allying with trade unions, the IUSF will launch a protest campaign on 28 May, he added.

Meanwhile, Police Media Spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana claimed that the police 'had to use force in self-defence.'

Rishad strongly condemns burning of Muslim shop in Mawanella

Tuesday 20th May 2014

  • Says the act is very dangerous; requests prompt action from Police
Minister of Industry and Commerce Rishad Bathiudeen yesterday said that he condemns the torching of a Muslim-owned business in Mawanella on 18 May, while visiting the scene of the crime on Sunday.

Minister Bathiudeen said: “The hardware shop owned by a Muslim in Mawanella was torched on 18 May. When I visited the location of the incident, the Muslims of the area informed me that this was an intentional act by anti-Muslim elements to create tension between communities. I have instructed the Police in the area to take necessary action and to forward the incident to the Government Analyst immediately. We also call on the authorities to initiate immediate action and investigations to find the offenders. There have been several such acts in various other parts of the country targeting Muslim businesses. Such acts appear to be instigated in order to destroy the valuable peace that dawned in the aftermath of the 2009 victory of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. My party and I, the ACMC, strongly condemn this dangerous act.”
AHS students struggle politically motivated – Dr. De Zoysa
BY UMESH MORAMUDALI- May 20, 2014

Nursing unions who feign concern about Allied Health Science (AHS) students should provide jobs to AHS graduates in the positions of matron and sister, said GMOA Media spokesman Dr. Naveen de Zoysa. He said that although nurses pretend that they stand for rights of the AHS students, nurses genuinely do not support graduates.

"According to the Service minute of nurses, a maximum of 25% graduates are recruited as nurses and in previous years AHS graduates had to start from the same level as nurses despite being graduates. If nurses are so keen about AHS students why then can't they allow AHS graduates to enter the health services as matrons or sisters?" he queried. He noted that trade unions support for the struggle of AHS students, was not for the benefit of students, but for political ends.

"All those political parties and trade unions want universities to be closed, to get political benefits.
Dr. Zoysa noted although students claimed that the duration of the AHS degree was reduced students who got high Z score marks in A/L can do the four years degree.

"AS per the information we have 60% of the students who follow AHS degree in Peradeniya University have been given the opportunity to do a four year degree as they got a sufficient Z score. This is the usual procedure regarding special degree programmes," he noted.

He also added that Inter University Students' Federation (IUSF) can come for the discussions with GMOA regarding the matter, but so far IUSF had shown no intention of resolving the issue through discussions.

Writing On The Wall: A Sinhala Prayer In A Tamil Church

Udan 1
Colombo TelegraphBy Udan Fernando -May 20, 2014

Dr. Udan Fernando
When I was walking near the Mulativu beach by around 5.30 this morning, I came across an abandoned Catholic Church. It was in a dilapidated condition. The Church seems to have been used during the war period, at least in the last stages of the war. A new Church, made in concrete, is under construction a few meters away. But the old statues still remain in the abandoned Church.
While scrutinizing the various objects in this interesting Church, I saw some writing on its walls in Tamil – mostly names of lovers, like Nidharshan & Gopika, etc. To my surprise there was some Sinhala writing on one wall. It read as: හිමියනි සාධු හඬ මිස, වෙඩි හඬ නොම සේ ම (A loose translation will be: Oh Lord, let it only be the sound of saadhu; not that of guns).  Saadhu is a Pali word which means good, excellent or auspicious. The writing was dated 2009.05.08, a few days before the declaration of the end of the war.
Udan 1
This writing, in my opinion a prayer, seems to be written by a Sinhala soldier, while his fellow colleagues were busy ‘ending the war’ or as the government said ‘carrying out a humanitarian operation’.  I could not understand who he was making this prayer to. What does he meant by ‘himiyani’, the Lord? The Catholic Saint or his own Lord Buddha ??
Anyway, this Sinhala Prayer apparently written by a Buddhist soldier on a Tamil Church wall made me to think a lot as the country just ‘celebrated’, two days before, the fifth anniversary of the so-called ‘triumphant victory’….My own prayer is that this would just be a ‘writing on the wall’ in its literal sense, not figuratively.

Maithri –Nimal-John want President (MaRa) to abolish Executive Presidency
(Lanka-e-News- 19.May.2014, 11.30PM) The proposal made by senior Ministers of the government , Maithripala Sirisena , Nimal Siripala De Silva and John Seneviratne to President Mahinda Rajapakse to abolish the Executive Presidency had been most disdainfully and disgracefully discarded , according to reports reaching Lanka e news inside information division.

These SLFP senior Ministers have made this proposal after a meeting with the President at the Temple trees in the early part of this month .They have stated, in view of the Island wide loud voluble protests against the Executive Presidency , this system must be abolished prior to the next presidential elections, at which election the current President is a UPFA prospective candidate. They have therefore stated that a resolution shall be brought forward to abolish this Executive Presidency system , and the elections shall be conducted in accordance with the new system that has been agreed upon.

Mahinda Rajapakse who knows that it is only when he is the Executive President he can toy with the constitution , carry on his oppressive and dictatorial rule ,ride roughshod on the people’s wishes and by pass the legislature according to his personal whims and fancies , had not uttered a word about the abolition . He had dodged the burning issue and stated , if the Presidential elections is held under the new election system it will be advantageous to the UNP , and hence the Presidential elections shall be conducted as before.

The SLFP seniors who are in deep resentment against the present Executive Presidency had gone back after the discussions much more disappointed and disgruntled. Meanwhile Vasu -Samasamaja –communist and left parties that are of the government have jointly resolved that prior to the next Presidential elections , the executive Presidency shall be abolished. They have written a letter to the secretary of the SLFP inquiring about their opinion in this regard, based on reports reaching Lanka e news.No answer had been received from the SLFP yet.

However , it is most significant to note that in the election manifesto on which Mahinda Rajapakse got the mandate to rule the country , it is stated in page 84 of Mahinda chinthana expressly and explicitly under the constitutional amendments , that the executive Presidency shall be abolished , and a new constitution that will provide solutions to all the issues in the country is hoped to be introduced with the consent of all. The President ought to have therefore introduced officially amendments to the constitution which makes him answerable to the Parliament.

Yet , Mahinda Rajapakse who has become a byword for broken promises, even after ten years had still not honored that solemn promise he made in his much hyped Mahinda chinthana which to all intents and purposes had by now become a ‘ Mahinda karadara’ to the oppressed and abysmally suffering people.

The Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) recommendations were only a guideline and not "a blanket solution" to all issues confronting the country, the government said yesterday.

Responding to questions at yesterday’s post-Cabinet Press briefing regarding the non implementation of key LLRC proposals nearly two and a half years after it was presented to Parliament, Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella replied "All what is said in the LLRC Report cannot be accepted as the one and only remedy to various problems faced by the country."

There were certain areas where the LLRC recommendations could be applied, but not with regard to all National issues. Sri Lanka had a constitution and far reaching amendments could be done only with recourse to it and parliament, the Minister pointed out.

Among the key recommendations of the LLRC Report was the re-establishment of the Independent Commissions which were scrapped with the abolition of the 17th Amendment to the Constitution, a Witness Protection Act and an independent inquiry into allegations of human rights violations by the State and the LTTE.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the "Victory Day" celebrations in Matara on Saturday, to mark the fifth anniversary of the defeat of the LTTE said that the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) was the proper forum to discuss all national issues.

The Tamil National Alliance and the UNP have refused to participate in the PSC stating that the issues that led to a thirty year war had been discussed for decades and the solutions were staring in the face. They have called on the government to place its devolution proposals on the table, if a response was required from them.

Government says will not implement all LLRC recommendations

keheliya rabukwellaThe government has said it will not implement all the recommendations in the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC).

Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Keheliya Rambukwella has told the media that the LLRC report will not be seen as a Bible and all the recommendations will not be implemented.
He has said that the government will only implement recommendations it feels can be done.
Rambukwella has added that while there are some recommendations which can be implemented in the short term there are others which need constitutional amendments which will take a longer time.

Dual citizenship applicants to be interviewed by Gota

The Sundaytimes Sri LankaBy Chris Kamalendran-Sunday, January 06, 2013
The Government is set to resume the dual citizenship system this month, but applicants will face a tough screening procedure including a face-to-face interview with a panel headed by Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The other members in the panel will be Foreign Ministry Secretary Karunatillake Amunugama and Public Administration Secretary P.B. Abeykoon.
“The panel will look into criteria such as the applicant’s professional qualifications, investment capacity and the need to obtain dual citizenship”, Mr Amunugama said.“Many of the people who are seeking dual citizenship have left the country in their youth and therefore we will be closely looking at the reason for their decision,” he added. Immigration official said some 2,000 applications for dual citizenship scheme were pending.
The dual citizenship scheme was introduced in 1987 and more than 4,000 people have been granted this facility.
Sarath Kumara, Immigration Controller in charge of visas, said amendments to the Immigration Act would be introduced based on proposals sent to the Legal Draftsman Department.
Persons applying for dual citizenship will first have to face an interview with a panel from the Immigration Department before facing the panel of the three ministry secretaries, he said adding that applications from people with criminal records would not be entertained.

Dual citizenship status for foreign spouse under review

By  on May 20, 2014

Foreign spouse who are married to Sri Lankan national will hereby be denied dual citizenship rights according to new regulations under review by the Immigration Department.
Accordingly the regulations entail that foreign spouse who are married to Sri Lankan nationals and foreign spouse who were later widowed will not be entitled to dual citizenship.
Previously if a foreign spouse or widow of a Sri Lankan citizen had been residing in Sri Lanka for a period of not less than seven years, they were eligible for Sri Lankan citizenship.
In 2011, it was revealed that Foreign national who had dual citizenship were to have their status reviewed after an interview which would assess their eligibility under new criteria.
On February 15 the same year, the government announced that it would suspend the dual citizenship scheme. At that time more than 3,500 people of Sri Lankan origin had  dual citizenship.

‘You need to dig a bit deeper to see where the 7.3% growth rate for 2013 came from, and then you see it basically came from the construction sector, led by cost-inflated road projects, and other government projects, UNP Parliamentarian and economist Dr. Harsha de Silva told The Island Financial Review during an interview last week.

"The rate of economic growth is questionable as current methodology of calculating the GDP is outdated, and also the fact that there was a public disclosure that the director in charge of calculating GDP was asked to change the figure. On the other hand, Inflation calculation is not acceptable either. However, leaving a margin of error, I accept the growth figure and the inflation figure achieved are not bad."

"However, the crux of the matter is, the ordinary man in the street doesn’t feel the impact of these growth figures as these monies have been siphoned out to Swiss accounts held by white collar criminals, and not to the people of the country," he alleged.

Referring to GDP per capita income which stands at US$ 3,280, the UNP Parliamentarian said he was surprised that it wasn’t more than that, given all the fraud and corruption in the construction sector that is driving GDP growth.

"US$ 3,280 is approximately Rs.145,000 per month for a household of four persons, but the Household Income and Expenditure Survey shows that actual income is less than one third of that amount. Although the two figures need not necessarily match, it clearly reflects that owners of capital are making massive profits while owners of labour are underpaid," de Silva added.

Commenting on the improvement in the trade account, he said the fact of the matter was that Sri Lanka used to export 35% of its GDP a decade ago, and now it has fallen to 14%.

When asked if he a saw a gradual reduction of the fiscal deficit and debt to GDP ratio as per the Central Bank Annual Report, de Silva said cutting back public expenditure for the sake of cutting wasn’t meaningful.

"The government spends lavishly on unnecessary, extravagant projects while cutting back funds allocated to highly important fields such as education. For example, Sri Lanka’s capital expenditure for the Ports and Highways Ministry was Rs.131 billion last year while this amount allocated for the Education Ministry was only Rs.7.6 billion. Apart from that, there’s creative accounting by the government as it transfers some of its expenses, including debt repayment from the Central Bank, to various corporations and boards , removing it from budget calculations," he charged.

Dalada Maligawa buys ‘Asian Mirror’!

asian mirror dhaladaAt the request of the president, Diyawadana Nilame of Sri Dalada Maligawa in Kandy, Pradeep Nilanga Dela Bandara, has bought the Asian Mirror website, through media director of the Dalada Maligawa, Krishantha Hiswella, known among journalists as ‘Sulu Diyawadana Nilame’, reports say.

Media director of the Dalada Maligawa, Krishantha Hiswella has reportedly paid Rs. 15 million in this transaction.
The Asian Mirror website was founded and maintained by Subhashini Gamage, the wife of State Trading Corporation chairman Pradeep Gunawardena, with the assistance of minister Bandula Gunawaredena. The main task of this website was to respond to allegations in the media against minister Gunwardena. At that time, the website had around 20 employees.
Rasika Jayakody is the English editor of the website, bought indirectly from money belonging to the Dalada Maligawa, while the Sinhala editor is Sugath Dharmapriya, formerly of Sirasa Media Network.
The media coordination of this website with the President’s Media Unit is being done by its new owner Krishantha Hiswella.
Through the PMU, the president has instructed Hiswella to attack government politicians more, rather than opposition figures. Special targets of this website will be SLFP general secretary Maithripala Sirisena, ministers Nimal Siripala de Silva, Janaka Bandara Tennakoon, John Seneviratne, Duminda Dissanayake, Mervyn Silva and former prime minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, all considered future threats to the president.
Accordingly, the website carried an article today (20) targeting and belittling SLFP general secretary Sirisena, saying ‘Minister Maithripala’s position a fake – WHO says.’ Another article says minister Mervyn Silva had met opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in the US and discussed their future political action.
Plans have been made to carry various media campaigns through this website to target the next presidential election, reports say.

Ex-Malaysian prime minister says CIA, Boeing 'hiding' missing airplane

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad claims the CIA and Boeing are hiding the missing Malaysia Airlines plane.

BY
Monday, May 19, 2014

Mahathir Mohamad, the former prime minister of Malaysia, made the dramatic claims on his personal blog. ‘The plane is somewhere,’ he said. ‘Someone is hiding something. It is not fair that MAS and Malaysia should take blame.’ So far, the White House and the State Department have not commented on the former pol’s accusations.

A former Malaysian prime minister is accusing the CIA and Boeing of “hiding” what really happened to missing Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370.

In a post on his personal blog Sunday, Mahathir Mohamad suggested the CIA remotely seized control of the Boeing 777 jet in midair and that a search for the aircraft in the Indian Ocean is a “waste of time.”

“The plane is somewhere, maybe without MAS (Malaysia Airlines) markings,” wrote on his blog.

“Someone is hiding something,” he added. “It is not fair that MAS and Malaysia should take blame.”

He claimed the plane was equipped so that it could be taken over “remotely by radio or satellite links by government agencies like the Central Intelligence Agency” if terrorists attempted to breach the flight deck.

There was no immediate response to Mahathir’s post from the White House or the State Department.

Mahathir, 88, Malaysia’s prime minister from 1981 to 2003, is known for his wild accusations. He once claimed the 9/11 terrorist attacks were an excuse to strike against the Muslim world and declared Jews ran the world by proxy.

The Malaysia Airlines flight vanished without a trace on March 8 while en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing.

A multi-country search party has spent millions of dollars probing the Indian Ocean off Australia, where debris believed to be from the plane was spotted but never recovered.

“It is a waste of time and money to look for debris or oil slick or to listen for pings from the black box,” Mahathir wrote on his blog.

“Airplanes don’t just disappear,” he wrote. “Certainly not these days with all the powerful communication systems, radio and satellite tracking and filmless cameras which operate almost indefinitely and possess huge storage capacities.”

He also aimed his suspicions at Boeing, writing that the company built the aircraft and installed its communications and GPS equipment.

“Surely Boeing would ensure that they cannot be easily disabled as they are vital to the safety and operation of the plane,” he wrote. “For some reason, the media will not print anything that involves Boeing or the CIA.”

On the morning of Sunday, Feb. 28, 2010, the villagers of Mubende District, Uganda were in church when they heard the sound of gunfire. They came out to find men torching their homes and crops. The soldiers held them off at gunpoint from rescuing their homes; one 8-year-old child was trapped and died in the fire. The soldiers then marched off the 20,000 farmers from the land that had been in their families for generations.

(Reuters) - Thailand's army declared martial law nationwide on Tuesday to restore order after six months of street protests that have left the country without a proper functioning government, but insisted the surprise intervention was not a military coup.
