Wesak poya devotees: are you mentally retarded yourselves to idly watch AG releasing proven rapists of mentally retarded victim.?

(Lanka-e-News-16.May.2014, 11.30PM) Yesterday being holy Wesak poya day, Buddhists who constitute 74% of the population of Sri Lanka are celebrating it in devotional practices. Yet the Buddhists keeping their eyes and mouth shut, and their hands clasped is most reprehensible and inhuman by any standard irrespective of their piety, when they know a most cruel rape was committed on a mentally retarded helpless hapless girl, and on top of that the equally criminal Attorney General of the cursed Rajapakse regime had deemed it fit to release the most heartless brutal culprits scott free.

The slow wheels of justice and change: a Sri Lankan case study?

GroundviewsFive years since the end of the war, the state of affairs in Sri Lanka is likely to evoke feelings of frustration and despondency for most readers of this series of essays. The military has entrenched itself in the governance of the North and East and continues to suppress Tamil political aspirations. Religious tensions have been rekindled, threatening the safety of the Muslim community. The main opposition party appears weak and divided. Meanwhile, the international community has remained engaged and concerned, but is only incrementally increasing bilateral and multilateral pressure on the government. This picture-what may be termed the micro-picture-does not present an optimistic prognosis for urgent change.

Five Years On Tamils Still Under Siege

Colombo TelegraphTime not Ripe for Truth and Reconciliation, Rather for Justice and A Referendum on Eelam.
Five years on after the end of the war, Tamils in the North and East are still “under siege”. This is a clear indication that the prevailing climate is not conducive, either for achieving peace, truth and reconciliation or for obtaining justice and reaching a political settlement. The only redeeming feature in a hopeless situation is the prospect of an international independent inquiry soon to be underway that could lead to ending impunity in Sri Lanka  - When the search for justice begins.

sri_lanka_tamil_womanWhilst the end goals mentioned here continue to remain elusive, common sense would show that without the latter i.e. remedial justice and a satisfactory political settlement, it would surely not be possible to have the former i.e. peace, truth and reconciliation. It is perfectly clear the Sri Lankan government hasn’t got the political will or the decency to do the right thing by the Tamil people, by allowing them to exercise their right to self determination and have control over their affairs. Whilst the time may not be ripe for peace, truth and reconciliation, a referendum on Eelam could however pave the way for peace, truth and reconciliation.
Accountability, Justice and Political Settlement High Priority
To this end, the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam (TGTE), feels strongly that any ‘truth and reconciliation’ mechanism must come only after justice is served and a political settlement is achieved. TGTE’s Prime Minister, Visuvanathan Rudrakumaran, in paying tribute to Nelson Mandela at the time of his passing, reflecting on the resolution the TGTE had passed in December 2013 just as it became public knowledge that Sri Lanka was looking to getting South Africa’s help to setup a “Truth and Reconciliation Commission”, wrote in an article: Reconciliation Is Not A Matter of Ignoring the Past, that “truth and reconciliation” must come only after “accountability and the birth of an independent and sovereign State of Tamil Eelam”:                              Read More

Rivalry Among TNA And Tussle With Devananda Is Death-Knell For Tamil Aspirations

Having been a comrade of Velupillai Pirabakaran during Eelam struggle in the '70s, he finally had the gumption to side with the governments in power to gain rights and some kind of economic redress for Tamils in North and East.

Mullivaikkal - Sri Lanka's government plans military parades this weekend to celebrate five years since its civil war victory. But the anniversary will go largely unmarked in Mullivaikkal village, where many are too scared to speak of what happened.

The northern village was where Tamil Tiger rebels fought their last stand after 37 years of war, and residents live in fear of the hundreds of soldiers still stationed in the district.

Five Years After May 2009: Blues For Sri Lanka

I. “And mine is the sling of David” (Jose Marti)
If Germany can celebrate its Reunification Day, when the Berlin Wall fell and the two halves of Germany were reunited, why should Sri Lanka not celebrate the day when the LTTE’s Iron Curtain was destroyed, a radical evil defeated, a monster (a South Asian Hitler) slain and the island reunified after decades?
Not every reunification is peaceful. In most cases the unification or reunification of the national territory and state required civil wars, as we know from Italy’s Risorgimento and the history of Europe, not to mention the military campaigns of Sun Yat Sen and the Kuomintang which reunified China.
Which collective political formation/entity, be it state, nation, community, or peoples, would not celebrate a mere half a decade later, the reunification of its territory; the return and repair of its borders so that its sovereign territory is coextensive with its natural boundaries?
Those who argue that civil wars are not commemorated are ignorant of the historical fact that when there is a liberating aspect to a civil war and when a civil war has ended in victory, it almost always is commemorated. Every revolution including the French and Russian is celebrated and every victorious revolution was preceded or followed by civil war. The defeat of the Tigers was felt to be an emancipation; an authentic liberation from decades-old terror.

Good Thoughts

by Gajalakshmi Paramasivam
( May 17, 2014, Melbourne, Sri Lanka Guardian) There is much discussion about 18 May – in relation to the war in Sri Lanka. To me 18 May is special because of spiritual experiences I consider to be miraculous due to my faith in Our Lady of Schoenstatt of the Sydney suburb of Mulgoa. This church is the parallel of Madhu Church in Sri Lanka. There would have been many devotees of Our Lady of Madhu caught up in the camps or would have ended up being killed during that period. To me, we must neither mourn nor celebrate at the public level but respect the value for which both sides lost lives.
Recently, when counseling a Tamil with family problems – I said that she could privately/confidentially act as per her likes and dislikes of the individual. But when it came to public display – it must be on equal opportunity / responsibility basis for all who relate to her in that relationship – for example all her siblings. That renders order to our family relationships. When there is order in family relationships there is order in community and social relationships. Then again, when counseling a white Australian lady – I had to take a different approach due to difference in cultural structures. With the latter, I took a zero base approach and said that we related to ourselves through others and hence to stop dwelling on relationships that did not make her feel valued. Those that we identify with whether they are pleasant or unpleasant – become our family – a part of us. Once they are a part of us – it is easier for us to manage the problem or opportunity in common- as if they are a part of our body even if that part gives us pain.

Then again, when reading through the confessions of a widow of Sri Lankan soldier – I could not help identify with common problems between her and Tamil war widows. At their levels – neither celebrations nor memorials would bring them the comfort and restoration of confidence they need. Given that Sri Lankans are getting used to living in weak - law and order environments – that which is wrong to those living in more structured environments would not seem so to these folks. As I said to the above lady – a person suffering from mental disorder would not be able to demonstrate reliable valuation of another. We can reliably see others only through ourselves. Yet, we often expect that valuation – even though we know it would be unreliable. It’s catch 22 – once you know you are mentally ill you are no longer mentally ill. In terms of relationships including at workplace and in governance – once you know that the other person is not capable and you accept it – the person is no longer a relation – but is family insider or is an outsider who needs to be observed but not related to. Either way it would not matter to us once we accept the limitations.

Often relatives continue to expect due to their desires and fears and thus keep the weakness as well as the frustration alive. This is the case with both sides to the Sri Lankan war. It’s as if one cannot live without the other and yet both are declaring ‘nationalism’. One needs to be careful in relation to remembering the dead. According to most religions they ‘go back to base’. Hence we need to use only Truth to remember or not remember them - Truth as experienced by us. Such memorial or no memorial is natural. In the process of conducting memorials, the living who are already suffering should not have to suffer due to any status demotion of the dead. They would not if the memorial is based on Truth alone.

Truth – helps us remember them not as relations / enemies - but as values – positive or negative – as part of ourselves through our experiences. We are naturally connected to all those who also carry those values as a natural parts of themselves. That’s how miracles happen when we are in need. They are really unseen connections that would support all believers. We cannot believe if we keep the matter open beyond reasonable time and place. We need closures at the physical level beyond the point up to which we are confident of deriving returns.

In terms of Tamils seeking to remember publicly their heroes who have passed away, the risk is whether such would bring about anxiety to the relatives of the combatants. Instead, if it were to pray together at the same time – but within our respective homes – that would invoke the blessings of Peace. If we are not able to remember on our own, our valuation of those who died for their cause cannot be deep. Getting together physically is healthy but not when it results in anxiety for those left behind at the family level.

Those of us who consider ourselves to be civilians – need to bring about closure in terms of ‘terrorism’ as well as ‘war-crimes’. Otherwise we become the problem for the next generation by developing disorderly minds. We also carry the disorder into our next life. The average human needs to bring about a closure at the physical level – as in projects. Others who keep the relationship open – to excite their minds, would end up suffering depression due to disorderly mind. Whatever we do to the other – needs to be through a common system and/or Truth – for there to be order in our thinking. Special Police Units And General Democratic Governance: A Reflection On Religious Freedom With Justice

By Bishop Duleep de Chickera -May 17, 2014

Colombo TelegraphPuzzling Decisions and worrying trends
The recent government decision to appoint a special police unit to deal with inter-religious conflict adds to the prevailing confusion on the freedom of religion and the rule of law. While the decision implies seriousness in arresting the current religious tensions, the government’s reluctance to achieve this very aim through the existing and adequately mandated and deployed police force, is puzzling.
More seriously the lack of a clearly defined mandate for the special unit is worrying. Given the prevailing apathy towards the freedom of religion and the rule of law, no mandate, could easily evolve into an open mandate with potential to further aggravate the crisis.  For instance, if the special unit were to investigate random complaints on “unlawful” places of worship and “unethical conversions”, this could eventually be usurped to criminalise legitimate religious gatherings and voluntary conversions through conscience; characteristics of any healthy democratic society.
The peoples’ consciousness
Fashion BugThese trends and possibilities must bring our leaders and people to their senses. The harassment of minority religions has gone unabated for too long for reasonable people to believe that the authorities are unable to bring the situation under control. This inaction must consequently point to some electoral expectation and soon, if not already, the people will realise that if some are allowed to be harassed for electoral gain today, others will similarly be allowed to be harassed for electoral gain, tomorrow.
Democratic obligations for all
It is therefore necessary for people of all and no religious persuasions, either out of self-interest, social interest, or both, to urge the authorities to do what they are mandated to do. This is to protect persons and property and restrain, and where necessary prosecute, all who violate the law, without exception.
In modern democratic states this amounts to ensuring the existence of a professional and independent judiciary, and that the police in particular are equipped to do their work impartially. It also requires that when this work lacks competence or demonstrates bias, those entrusted with the interpretation and implementation of the rule of law, are to be held responsible.
When, in such an ethos of law and order, the insensitive or extreme religious behaviour and practices of some disturb the peace or infringe on the rights of others, remedial negotiations with assistance from moderate religious leaders is a wise first option. If this fails the law should be applied without exception. Under no circumstances should fear or suspicion of some exclusive elements, impose restrictions on the religious freedom of those who adhere to their religious obligations within the framework of the law and social trust.
The fruit of justice
If such a climate determined by the rule of law and good intention can replace the current climate of hostility, fear, grievance and apathy there will be no need for a special police unit, religious freedom will abound for all and our beloved Sri Lanka will move towards a welcoming democratic state.

Sri Lanka Muslims at the cross-roads – 2

by Izeth Hussain-May 16, 2014,

I concluded the first part of this article by stating that the Muslim strategy of political quietism had several reasons behind it, one of which was the fear psychosis set off initially by the anti-Muslim riots of 1915. I had intended to begin this part of my article by going into the other reasons, but I have since then come across excellent material to substantiate my point about the Muslim fear psychosis. M.S.M.Fouzer, writing in the web site Halal SL, states that there are disturbing signs at present that the anti-Muslim campaign is catching on with the Buddhist masses. He gives importance as a causative factor to the spread of a video which had been shown by the BBS to the heads of the Sangha in Kandy. He pointed to the destruction of a shop in Aluthgama and other ominous incidents, and advocated, among other things, that Muslims should avoid clothing that identifies them as Muslims while mingling with the Vesak crowds.
Sangamitta students teach pristine Buddhism to Gnanassara and Champika how to attain human state from their animalism and cannibalism
(Lanka-e-News- 16.May.2014, 11.30PM) Students of Sangamitta school , Galle took upon their small shoulders the great responsibility of preaching the true tenets and precepts of Buddhism on the holy Wesak poya day against extremist lay terrorism to Gnanassara and the monks of Champika nikaye (Buddhist order) stoking and indulging in terrorism in the name of Buddhism , and who were responsible for attacking 103 Christian and 280 Muslim religious places during the year 2013 alone following fanatically misconceived Buddhism, according to a most refreshing report of UNHRC.

At Sangammitta school there was a teacher Ms. M.S.F Hasana , a Muslim national .Owing to her brilliant teaching talents , the students of Sangamitta school secured the best results in the GCE O/L exam 2012, whereby she won an award from the education Department authorities. She met with an untimely sudden death due to a misfortune.

It must be pointed out the Buddhist students who learnt from her did not let her down .On this holy Wesak poya day , the children who had been learnt true pristine Buddhism and about the virtues of being grateful, faithfully followed the true Buddhist precepts and put up a Dansala to invoke blessings on her who meet with a sudden and untimely death .
Like the Dansala that was put up last year the students did not forget to put up one this year too.

Gnanassara , Champika , and the brutal and terrorist monks of the ‘Buddhist order’ created by them who have turned into animals and cannibals from human state , when it should be the other way round , and are on a blood thirsty campaign out for the blood and flesh of those of other religious faiths must take a lesson from that Sangamitta school students and eat humble pie before them for opening their eyes and mind to true pristine Buddhism taught by Lord Buddha.

It is hoped next Wesak , Gnanassara , Champika and their order of monks who have descended to the state of cannibals and animals in human form would ascend back to human forms in accordance with true pristine Buddhism, and put up a Dansala for the Sangamitta school students in gratitude for reforming them.

At the same time the shameless sordid media Institutions and their self serving media coolies that are stooping to foment hatred instead of fostering love among races must be roundly condemned for their treacherous and traitorous activities.

A total of 17 university students have been arrested today during a protest in front of the University Grants Commission (UGC) in Colombo.

Police said that 13 students who had obstructed the arrest of an Allied Health student, for protesting in violation of a court order, were taken into custody while another 4 were held during the protest.

A group of Allied Health students as well as their parents launched the protest opposite the UGC this morning, over decision to reduce the duration of the allied health sciences degree.

Academics condemn student activists arrest

futa-logoUniversity academics today condemned the abrupt arrest of the sixteen student activists yesterday evening, adding such actions will only further provoke students than solve their issue.
Federation of the University Teachers Association (FUTA) President, Dr. Chandraguptha Thenuwara speaking to Daily Mirror said intimidating students is not the response to the authorities’ failure to address student grievances.
“Students’ demands and concerns regarding the issue on Allied Health Sciences course quality and the reduction of the course duration are fair. They have been reaching out to the authorities for over a period of three months but have received no response,” he said.
Dr. Thenuwara went on to say that other concerns raised in universities countrywide by student groups demanding a raise of the Mahapola scholarship, accommodation issues as well as matters regarding the quality of their academic courses too are justified.
“We urge the authorities to release the arrested students immediately and reconsider their approach to resolving student grievances. We request the responsible authorities to put a stop to the harassment and arbitrary arrests of the undergraduates and instead, resort to negotiations and discussions with the students,” he added.

17 Student Activists Remanded until 19th

iusf arrest1Magistrate had ordered 17 Student Activists to be remanded until 19th May. Allied Health Science Students activists of Universities of Ruhuna and Peradeniya are being detained said by the Inter University Students Federation in their press statement.

See full statement of IUSF below.
Although the Government of Sri Lanka has failed to give solutions to the cut in the Allied Health Sciences’ degree and the resistance action of Rajarata students against the repressive university administration, it has launched a campaign of repression against the student activists fighting for education rights.
The latest step by the police in this direction is following students in civil attire and abducting and illegally detaining them. Police has conducted two such illegal abductions. In both these abductions they have produced fake warrants against the students. These abductions happened when the students were leaving after a protest action held in front of the University Grants Commission yesterday (16) afternoon.
The first abduction happened at about 3.45 in the evening in front of the Post Office in Town Hall. Police officers in civil attire have followed 4 students, ambushed them and a three wheeler and a jeep that arrived suddenly have abducted them. Then they were illegally detained at the Kirulapona Police Station.
Second abduction happened at about 5.35 in the evening. Students have got into a bus to go to Colombo Fort and again police officers in civil attire had got into the bus had attempted to arrest a student under a warrant issued in the name of a different person. Students had protested the illegal arrest of the fellow student and the police had arbitrarily ordered the driver to take the bus along with the 13 students to Slave Island Police Station. When the bus arrived at the Police Station the police have inhumanly attacked the students with batons and poles right in front of the Police Station. As of now, students who were injured were not even hospitalized.
iusf arrestStudents were presented in front of the Fort Magistrate at his residence in Mount Lavinia at about 10.30 in the night and the Magistrate had ordered them to be remanded until 19th. Allied Health Science Students activists of Universities of Ruhuna and Peradeniya are thus being illegally detained and Students Council President of University of Peradeniya, Dimuthu Gunasekere is also among the illegally detained.
iusf arrest2Abducting and illegally detaining students without warrants and assaulting them is a grave violation of the fundamental rights of the students activists. We categorically condemn this political witch hunt of student activists by the police in collusion with the courts, especially in the context of the Higher Education Minister S.B.Dissanayake’s open threat towards IUSF activists and their families. We invite the people of this country to organize and rally to protect educational, political and fundamental rights of the students.

Describing his heartless nature Mahatma Gandhi’s granddaughter Tara Gandhi-Bhattacharya said recently that she did not find any trace of anguish on Modi’s face when he spoke about the 2002 post-Godhead riots in his state.
Talking to reporters in Indore, Tara Gandhi said,”Once I watched Modi speaking in Gujarat from a distance. I can’t judge him. But when he mentions the excesses of the Gujarat riots, I do not see any anguish on his face,” she said. “I am surprised as to how Modi, being in politics, being a human being, and being from Gujarat, can speak about the riots and that phase of violence without showing any pain.”                    Read More
