NOT A CRIME: Fishing being one of the most instinct-driven livelihood avocations, we should devise a system where trespassing by fishermen becomes impossible by definition. Photo: APIndia and Sri Lanka are within touching distance of each other— positively and negatively — in their tending of their democratic ecologies. A valid electoral mandate creates and celebrates a political majority. But, if that political majority has been gleaned not from political logic but from apolitical emotions, the democratic text gets grossly distorted by an undemocratic subtext. An electoral verdict political in name but ethnic in nature, democratic in name but majoritarian in character, constitutional in name but manipulative in its operation, is a travesty. When a democratically valid electoral majority is teased out of a democratically invalid ethnic majoritarianism, we get democratic deception, democratic tyranny.

Exclusive: Sri Lankan President set not to attend Glasgow 2014 after fears presence will overshadow Games

The possible presence of Mahinda Rajapaksa, pictured with British Prime Minister David Cameron last year, at Glasgow 2014 has provoked multiple concerns ©Getty ImagesThese concerns were also prevalent during Sri Lanka's ultimately unsuccessful bid for the Commonwealth Games in 2018 ©AFP/Getty ImagesA potentially harmful diplomatic challenge for Glasgow 2014 is likely to be avoided due to the fact Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa is not planning to attend the Commonwealth Games this summer, insidethegames has learned.

Inside The GamesThis comes after two letters were sent to British Foreign Secretary William Hague voicing concerns the presence of the controversial leader would mean the Games are overshadowed by questions relating to genocide and human rights abuse.

The first was sent by Hague's opposition counterpart in the Labour Party, shadow Foreign Secretary Douglas Alexander last Friday (May 9), demanding to know exactly how the Government plans to ensure the event is not hit by controversy.

It cites how police have already warned there could be protests on the streets of Glasgow if he does attend, before expressing further concerns about the possible role Rajapaksa would play in other events planned around the Games.

This was followed by a second letter, sent yesterday, by the Transnational Government of Tamil Eelam requesting that Hague "supports and formally advises" the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) over the issue.

It highlights the "continued arrogance of the Rajapaksa regime to the international community and their non-conformance to the values and principles of the Commonwealth", as well as their "continued structural genocide on the Tamil Homeland and the use of the Sri Lankan army to colonise and seize land belonging to the Tamil population".

As President since 2005, Rajapaksa is also head of the Sri Lankan Armed Forces and in this role, it is claimed he is responsible for the massacres of Tamil civilians and captured opposition fighters at the end of a three-decades-long Civil War ending in 2009.

These allegations caused much controversy during the Sri Lankan city of Hambantota's bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, where they ultimately finished runner-up behind the Gold Coast by 43 votes to 27.

Similar concerns also overshadowed a Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Sri Lanka last November, with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper choosing not to attend in protest of Rajapaksa, and British Prime Minister David Cameron criticised for making the trip despite domestic pressure not to.
A CGF spokesman reiterated to insidethegames that "each national association can extend an accreditation to their Head of Government, Sports Minister and High Commissioner, and the deadline for named team accreditations isn't until June".

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is yet to respond to either letter.

But if, as expected, Rajapaksa chooses not to visit, it would surely be a relief to both organisations, and would be one thing less to worry about ahead of the Games, set to begin on July 23.

There has also been concern over the possible presence of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni after he signed an anti-gay rights law strengthening existing legislation against homosexuality in the central African country.

Scottish cyclist Graham Obree has begun a petition, entitled "No Hate at the Games", calling for a ban on Ugandan politicians attending Glasgow 2014, which currently has nearly 4,000 signatures.

Prelates ask Wimal not to quit government

By Kamal Suraweera- May 15, 2014

The Mahanayake Theras of Malwatta and Asgiriya Chapters yesterday advised Construction Minister Wimal Weerawansa to bring the government to the right track without creating conflicts and also without quitting the government.

The Mahanayake Theras expressed displeasure at the manner in which the country is progressing when Weerawansa called on them to present a 12-point resolution drawn up by his Party, The National Freedom Front (NFF), at its second national convention. Weerawansa said if the suggestions were not accepted by the government, an alternative course of action would have to be sought. The Mahanayaka Thera of the Asgiriya, Chapter Udugama Sri Buddharakkhitha Thera, said, "the dictatorial behaviour of certain persons has not only harmed the government, but also created an environment in which detrimental external forces can thrive and influence."

The Thera said all sectors in the country were currently sinking into the abyss.
"Issues have come up because everyone's ideas have been taken into consideration.
"If people like you leave the government now, this will only aid those attempting to destroy the nation. Stay in the government and try to remedy it as the country needs your support. European countries come after us armed with information obtained from our own people." the Asgiriya Chapter prelate told Weerawansa.

"If things continue to deteriorate in this manner very soon there will be no country," Maha Nayake of the Malwatte Chapter Thibbatuwawe Sri Sumangala Thera said.

Weerawansa said, "We have no hidden agenda or ulterior motive to sabotage the government. We have no western diplomatic missions backing us unlike certain others. During the war we came to the aid of the government. We are not sure as to how the government will react when we present this 12-point proposal to it after Vesak. If their response is not conducive or favourable, we will have to go for an alternative."
Traditional Industries Deputy Minister Weerakumara Dissanayake, Central Province Councillor Nimal Piyatissa, former MP Nimal Premawansha and NFF Secretary Priyantha Witharana were also present at the meeting.

Proposal to remove Wimal, Champika!

wimal champika

A proposal to the effect that ministers Wimal Weerawansa and Champika Ranawaka should be removed from the cabinet with immediate effect is to be submitted to the SLFP. A senior official of the Presidential Secretariat has told Ratnapura district MP, Rakwana SLFP organizer Ranjith Soyza, to present the proposal to the SLFP electoral organizers’ meeting that is to be held shortly.
The proposal will allege both Weerawansa and Ranawaka have violated the collective responsibility of the cabinet and have been criticizing the government, leading SLFP activists and the average people to a situation of indecision.
At this meeting, port development minister, Kalutara district MP Rohitha Abeygunawardena is to table a proposal to immediately suspend the party membership of any person that will challenge SLFP candidate Mahinda Rajapaksa and contest the presidential polls as a common or a third candidate, or anyone who supports such a candidate.

Indian help sought to recover money from woman human smuggler

Thayapararajah and Uthayakala
Several Tamils have sought Indian intervention to help recover their money from a female human smuggler Thayapararajah Uthayakala, now in the custody of Tamil Nadu authorities for illegal entry during the first week of May, 2014.

In a letter to the Indian Consulate in Jaffna, a group of Tamils has called for tangible action to enable the group to recover money collected by Uthayakala formerly married to an LTTE cadre, promising employment in the UK. The victims alleged that Uthayakala had duped them by taking them to VFS Global UK Visa Application Centre in Colombo, where they handed over visa applications.

Having assured that they would be found employment in the UK, Uthayakala had collected millions of rupees from unsuspecting people over a three-month period before demanding additional US $ 2,000 each to prove authorities at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) that they were genuine travelers.

A senior Sri Lankan official familiar with the ongoing investigation told The Island that Uthayakala had no intention of at least accompanying them to BIA. Instead, after having taken them to Amala Guest House in Negombo, Uthayakala had collected US $ 2000 each from would be travellers to the UK and left directing the victims to follow her to the BIA. They had no option but to leave the BIA disappointed as Uthayakala couldn’t be found there. Although they knew they had been duped nothing could be done as the whereabouts of Uthayakala wasn’t known.

The official said that Uthayakala would have easily disappeared to some Western country if she was not arrested by Tamil Nadu authorities for entering the country illegally. Still she could have escaped if she didn’t attract the attention of the media by alleging large scale atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan military. Had she simply claimed economic difficulties, the Indian media wouldn’t have bothered with her or others in her group. She was among ten Tamils, including five children who landed at Arichamunai off Dhanuskodi in the early hours of May 5.

Asked whether the government would conduct an investigation into human smuggling racket, the official said that there was a need for a comprehensive investigation. He said: "Thanks to the Indian media, we are able to identify Uthayakala’s second husband, Kathiravel Thayapararajah (33) whose disappearance in September 2009 prompted a section of the media as well as some international NGOs to accuse Directorate of Military Intelligence (DMI) of executing him. No less a person than the then US Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs and one-time US Ambassador in Colombo, Robert O. Blake inquired about the missing person."

The University Teachers for Human Rights (Jaffna), the Australian Government Refugee Review Tribunal, Tamilnet and the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights among others blamed the Sri Lankan intelligence for the disappearance.

Well informed sources told The Island that Thayapararajah had been closely connected to the LTTE, though he wasn’t involved in actual fighting on the ground. Having graduated from the Peradeniya University, Thayapararajah had joined a project run by Vanni Tech in Kilinochchi with the financial backing of the US based Tamil Diaspora. The project launched in 2003 during the Ceasefire Agreement brokered by Norway was one of those operations undertaken by the Diaspora, though Thayapararajah joined the organisation in 2005.

Meanwhile, another person living in Colombo has written to the Indian High Commission requesting Uthayakala’s extradition to Colombo to face an inquiry over an alleged attempt to extort money from him.

Anti-Chinese violence turns deadly in Vietnam

 By  May 15, 2014

Asian Correspondent

Reports are emerging in Vietnam of a number of people killed and injured in yesterday’s riots against Chinese factories and workers.  While solid numbers are hard to find, some initial reports  put the number of those killed as high as 21, with over 100 more injured in the recent outbreak of violence.

Some of the factories targeted were Taiwanese and South Korean, though it is not yet clear whether the Vietnamese rioters did not understand the difference between China and Taiwan, or simply did not care.  A high ranking Taiwanese diplomat said that during one of the attacks, on Formosa Steel, a Taiwanese steel mill in central Vietnam, at least one worker was killed and 90 more were injured.
However, doctors at a hospital nearby where the riots happened say they saw five dead Vietnamese and 16 other bodies which they described as being of Chinese origin. Doctors say that injured people have continued to stream into the hospital throughout today.
Tensions between Vietnam and China have been growing to a fever pitch ever since the Chinese took the provocative action of placing an oil rig in disputed waters in the South China Sea, known in Vietnam as the East Sea. Please see here for my in-depth look at the recent events surrounding the oil rig controversy.
A violent weekOver the past week, numerous foreign owned factories were targeted for looting and burning by Vietnamese demonstrators. Until yesterday, although increasingly destructive to property, no deaths had been reported.
Tuesday saw over 20,000 protestors outside of factories that they believed to be owned by Chinese. Although peaceful at first, the protests quickly turned violent and over 15 factories were burned and looted.  The majority of the violence has centered on industrial zones in the provinces of Binh Duong and Dong Nai, located near Ho Chi Minh City.
Taiwan’s President Ma Ying-jeou has issued a formal request to Vietnam’s government asking it to do more to protect Taiwanese citizens in Vietnam. The Taiwanese government has also warned its citizens to avoid going to Binh Duong and Dong Nai provinces unless absolutely necessary.
The Chinese government has condemned the recent protests and attacks, saying the recent events represented “the most stunning attack [on] foreign businesses in East Asia in recent years.”  However, this statement might be construed as somewhat hypocritical since China has in the past allowed similar violent protests against the Japan.
Both Vietnam and China appear to be making attempts to censor coverage of the recent violence. For the Chinese, this action may represent a worry over the possibility of revenge protests against Vietnamese occurring.
On the ground in VietnamHere in Hanoi, it is difficult to go anywhere and not hear people discussing the recent actions of China and the Vietnamese people’s response. While many people are not directly impacted by the events, there is a strong feeling of patriotism that runs through all classes, from the lowliest street food hawker to the highest ranking businessmen.
In recent days this correspondent has been told, by otherwise calm and collected locals, that they feel a strong hatred towards the Chinese. Although, when they were asked what specifically should be done to counter China, they were often at a loss for an answer other than “protesting strongly” against the Chinese actions.
There are also rumors that the Vietnamese government might be directing the protests and attacks, or at the very least, to be giving its tacit approval to the actions.  Stories mentioning this angle on the recent events have been taken down from local online news sources.
On Thursday afternoon Agence France Press tweeted that China openly accused the Vietnamese government of “connivance” with rioters.
However, there now appears to be a growing number of people who are coming together to organize a boycott of Chinese goods. It is not clear how feasible this actually would be, given the sheer amount of Chinese goods that have flooded into the country in recent years. But the intention is clear, and more and more Vietnamese seem to be feeling that they need to do something to show how they feel about China’s actions.

Gilad Atzmon
Apparently, according to the ADL, the territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip had the highest ‘anti-Semitic’ attitudes at 93%. But is it really ‘anti Semitic’ to oppose those who plundered your home and murdered your family?
israeli-Brain-Power
By Gilad AtzmonGilad Atzmon
The Jewish ADL (Anti Defamation League) revealed this week that more than ‘one in four adults are ‘anti-Semitic.’
Of Some 53,100 adults in 102 countries and territories around the world surveyed for the ADL Global 100: An Index of Anti-Semitism, 26% were found to be ‘deeply infected’ with ‘anti-Semitic attitudes.’
Personally, I find both the ADL and its polls quite amusing.  Can you think of another people on this planet who so spend so much time and energy measuring how much they are loved or hated? Do the Brits measure how despised they are in Moldovia? Do the Palestinians question people all over the world to see how much they love those indigenous people of Palestine? Well, the Jews do and it’s for a reason. Abe Foxman, ADL’s National Director, must by now have grasped the immense destructive global power of Jewish politics, so naturally he wants to measure the reaction. But rather than reflecting on the results and then turning to his own people in the hope of re-educating them, Foxman always blames the rest of humanity. And why? Because in the Judeo-centric cosmos, the Jew is always innocent and the Goy is always to blame.
ADL discovered that the least anti-Semitic country at 0.2% of the adult population ‘hating Jews.’ is ........Laos! But what does that mean? Should the ADL start to shlep Jews to Laos? Maybe, rather than Palestine, it is Laos that is the promised land. Trouble is, once the Jews start to immigrate to Laos, anti Semitic attitudes will sharply rise. ADL is yet to resolve this Jewish dilemma yet.
Apparently, according to the ADL, the territories of the West Bank and Gaza Strip had the highest ‘anti-Semitic’ attitudes at 93%. But is it really ‘anti Semitic’ to oppose those who plundered your home and murdered your family? No Abe, this is not anti-Semitism, this is resistance.
The questions of the survey were also very interesting. Respondents were asked a series of 11 questions about Jews, Jewish power, Jewish tribalism, Jews and money and Jewish behaviour. Those who responded affirmatively to six or more negative statements about Jews were considered to hold ‘anti-Semitic’ attitudes. But I beg to differ. I’d think that those who answered affirmatively were simply authentic, honest folk who were better informed about the state of the world. Now, if I am correct here, it means that about a quarter of world’s population is authentic, honest and informed - a most positive and encouraging bit of information.
But back to the results of the survey. It seems that 74% of respondents indicated that they had never met a Jew and yet, of those, 25% still harboured anti-Semitic attitudes. Also, of the overall 26% overall of people who did harbour anti-Semitic attitudes, some 70% of them had never met a Jew.  But you know, most people have never met a Nazi either and yet Nazis are also pretty unpopular these days. It’s all a matter of reputation.
All in all, it seems that AIPAC, The Jewish State, CFI, CRIF, ADL  and Bernard Henri Levy have been investing an awful lot of energy giving Jews bad name.

    • Turkish unions held a one-day strike to protest against mine safety standards after 282 people were killed in the country's worst ever mining accident. Protests have been reported in several towns and cities including Istanbul, Ankara, Izmir and Zonguldak. In Soma itself protesters were chanted: "Soma's coal with burn the government."

    • The eventual death toll could exceed 400 as more bodies emerge from the Soma mine. Turkey's energy minister Taner Yildiz said rescue teams have recovered eight more victims raising the current death toll to 282. There are thought to be up to 150 miners still underground, and no survivors have been rescued since Wednesday morning.
    • Police fired water cannon and tear at thousands of protesters in Izmir. A union leader was injured in the crackdown.
    • Mounting political anger about the tragedy is being fuelled by photographs showing an aide to Recep Tayyip Erdogan kicking a protester as the prime minister received a hostile reception in Soma on Wednesday. The aide, a former graduate student at the University of London's SOAS, is due to make a statement later today. Inconclusive video has also emerged appearing to show Erdogan in a skirmish with a protester as he took refuge in a supermarket. President Abdullah Gül was heckled as he visited Soma on Thursday

More than 70 percent of the world’s population doesn’t own a car

Posted:
More than 70 percent of the world’s population doesn’t own a car1—a surprising fact for anyone who’s sat for what seems like hours on end in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Millions of people rely on public transit to get around. That’s why, since 2007, we’ve worked to include public transit routes and schedules in Google Maps. In fact, buses, trains, trams and subways included in Google Maps travel 200 million kilometers every day—that’s the equivalent of driving every single road in the world three times!2
Today, Google Maps is helping you get around on public transit even more easily with these additions:
  • We’ve added every single transit route in Great Britain to Google Maps—making it easier to get anywhere from Land’s End to John O’Groats.
  • On the other side of the globe, Vancouverites looking for sun can now get real-time updates on whether a bus to Kits is faster than one to Third Beach.
  • In Chicago, Cubs fans can now zip to and from Wrigley Field, armed with the real-time information they need to hop on a bus and avoid congestion on Lake Shore Drive.
  • And finally, just in time for the games, we’ve recently added transit information for every host city inBrazil. Can you say “GOOOAAALLLLL?!”
Our transit data spans six continents, 64 countries and more than 15,000 towns and cities worldwide. And we’re not done yet: Google Maps will continue to improve—serving people the information they need to get around town when and where they need it.

Break dancing Buddhist Monks
This is an amazing dance video and everyone should watch it at-least for once. This is not just a dance video, but a tribute to Late. Adam Yauch, frequently known by his stage name MCA. The video is uploaded by a YouTube channel just a week ago and people from all around the world are watching this video. In addition, the video is receiving so many likes as well. In this video you will watch four guys dressed as Buddhist Monks and dancing to Beastie Boys music. Beastie Boys hip hop group was found by Adam along with his friends.
At Manhattan’s Union Square, small space has been occupied for the boys to dance at in honor of the Late. Adam Yauch. They all do amazing dance steps and stunts such as handstand, headstand, head-roll and many other amazing steps. They come at center to perform one after another. They finish their dance performance in style by making different and attractive dance poses. So many people are gather around them to watch their dance and few of them are capturing their dance into their phone cameras. This is really one of the best dance video i have ever seen on internet.
Let’s talk little about Late Adam as well. He was born on August 5, 1964 and died on May 4, 2012 at the age of just 47. He was a rapper, musician, film director and human right activist. He played a big role in the movement for Tibetan independence, that is the reason these guys dressed as Buddhist Monks. His father was also a social worker. He died of cancer, and because of illness he could not appear in music videos for his album. He fought with salivary grand cancer for 3 years but could not win, and died. He left his wife and a daughter, Tenzin Losel, behind. I read a lot about him on internet, he was a great personality and a kind human being.
Thanks for watching this wonderful dance video and i hope you guys enjoyed it.

UNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS EXPERT TO ASSESS THE SITUATION OF SRI LANKANS MIGRATING ABROAD FOR WORK

Many Lankan migrants experience abuse - UNUNITED NATIONS HUMAN RIGHTS EXPERT TO ASSESS THE SITUATION OF SRI LANKANS MIGRATING ABROAD FOR WORK
14 May 2014
GENEVA / COLOMBO (14 May 2014) - The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants, François Crépeau, will visit Sri Lanka from 19 to 26 May 2014 to assess the human rights situation of Sri Lankans migrating abroad for work, and the related recruitment practices. "Migration plays a key role in the economic development of Sri Lanka. Foreign workers form 24% of the labour force, and remittances form 33% of the country's foreign exchange and 8.3% of its GDP, "Mr. Crépeau said. "However," the human rights expert noted, "many migrants reportedly experience abuse and exploitation, which often begins already during the recruitment process." "This visit represents a unique opportunity to assess their situation on the ground," he said. This is the first mission to Sri Lanka by an independent expert charged by the UN Human Rights Council with monitoring and reporting on the human rights situation of migrants around the world. During his eight-day mission to the country, Mr. Crépeau will meet with a range of government officials responsible for migration and labour, international organizations, civil society, the private sector and both prospective and returned migrants, to discuss how to better protect the human rights of migrants, including in the recruitment process. The Special Rapporteur will present a comprehensive report of the visit to the United Nations Human Rights Council in June 2015. François Crépeau (Canada) was appointed Special Rapporteur on the human rights of migrants in June 2011 by the UN Human Rights Council, for an initial period of three years. As Special Rapporteur, he is independent from any government or organization and serves in his individual capacity. Living A Lie: Rape And The Burning Muslim Shops

By  Hameed Abdul Karim -May 14, 2014

Colombo TelegraphOTHER Day I came across an article that appeared in the The Island titled 'Buddha Sasana Ministry Rehearsal for Invasion is a Regime Change' and was horrified to find the writer had the arson casually Justified Attack On a Shop in Aluthgama owned by Muslims by claiming that this had happened because a young Sinhala Buddhist boy had been raped by the owner inside the shop.
The writer had gone to extents to twist the facts of the case to suit his 'theory of justification' blindly ignoring all the facts that were out there in the open days before the incident took place. The police had taken the shop owner into custody and kept him in the cop shop for one and a half days after which they were compelled to release him because there was no evidence at all to press charges.
To add insult to injury the writer states quite categorically that the boy, allegedly raped, was hospitalised. This is an absolute fabrication on his part. If this was the case, as he claims, then it would be only proper for him to check the hospital records.
Inside the Fashion Bug
Inside the Fashion Bug
According to media reports this boy in question had gone to the shop with his mother and it was at this point that the alleged incident had taken place. If the shop owner had actually raped the boy or abused him in any way then common sense suggests that quite a length of time would have passed for the act to take place. What was the mother doing while the boy was absent? Mothers usually don't lose sight of their children when on an outing like going out shopping. Clearly this is a set up.
